  1. Neat observation! I also have both types in equal numbers. Those marks on the back are where the plastic was injected. Molds have multiple parts, of course. There's the front and the back to give the shape of the mask. The front and back are pressed together and molten plastic is squeezed in through holes. A third piece is pressed into place to close those holes. Other pieces can be used to produce undercuts if the design requires, but three is the minimum for LEGO like pieces. If they were rare it could be mis-moulding when the third piece wasn't correctly inserted. Being common, it's likely they were using multiple molds. You should look to see if one matches features found in prototype masks. LEGO could have re-used prototype mold parts for their early production runs. I bet what you've discovered here is that there are "prototype-style" and "production-style" masks. There's another difference. The bubbled masks have a mark on the left cheek plate. It looks like a dent in the end pushed the plastic out to the side a little. That one's mystery to me as it looks like they were put there in the soft plastic. Maybe there was an ejection mold-piece to get the mask out of the mold and the timing or temperatures were wrong so it happened too soon or the masks were sticking in the mold and had to be shoved. The sort of thing that gets fixed in production runs. How cool to have discovered something new about the first Most-Desired kanohi after 16 years. Yep! Look here. They're in the dark blue prototypes.

  4. I also tried dying tan Komaus. They ignored the dark brown dye.
  5. 8525 Boxes. Opened carefully with a knife opening the glued-closed flap. Somewhere there's a bankers box full, but at the moment I can put my hand on only one. My plan, back in the day, was to fill a set of boxes with masks and sealed heads to make a complete set. They would have looked new once glued closed though I couldn't avoid tearing the inside surface of the cardboard when opening them.
  6. An update. I had made 8 of the gold Miru, but they were a pale 14K gold, not the rich 18K gold that we like. I re-dyed a couple with an orange color but it was SOOooo quick. 1) it's hard to stop it fast enough so some came out copper (they're all beautiful, but not the PLG goal), 2) I don't know what the quickness does to the durability. I haven't had complaints about the previous dying, but that involves extended boiling at high temperature and these don't have that. I've just gotten in two new dyes that I hope will let me tune the color. I won't. They're made from clear masks and those are too expensive now. I have some in a box though from LONG ago. Want one? I thought you were going to make your own. I really want to get back into metal masks. I want to make the Mask Of Creation, and Krana sets in a variety of metals. Plus, I owe Mask Collector a Cobalt mask. I have a variety of dyed masks and can make more. I like the metallic green and the trans-orange ones.
  7. WMKK bought by me $180 Edit: Cancelled and refunded. Supposedly lost the card. Did someone here snake it? In the future I won't post til it's in my hand.
  8. No. That's a bad assumption. LEGO feels free to make whatever decisions they want. For instance, consider these white Rahkshi heads dyed purple. Some take the dye, some resist. The only way to know is to try a few from different sources.
  9. I'm sure I could. The problem is that the Proto Hau Nuva costs $20+shipping and there IS a failure rate. Call it $25. Put the $15 on top of the $25. Mirus cost 50 cents. Like the trans-purple Kaukau. I'll sell you one of those, but $40 and I'll not be making more. The trans-clears are just too dear. I'm going to try PLG Hau Olda.
  10. I've made six coppery ones and eight PLG and can make more. Plenty for all. Yes, they're dyed. It's not clear what masks I can make but you're right that I start with silver. My actual goal was PLG Avohkii but i've failed with both Flat Silver and Pearl Light Gray. The dye bounces 99%.
  11. Yep. Made it. Made some nice coppery ones too.
  12. Bigger $15 + shipping from California 90048 (PLG Kraahkan for comparison only)
  13. Thanks. I had read that it was from Takanuva but I discounted that because I knew it was wrong. I didn't think of the Stars set.
  14. I've seen some posts from 2014 saying that they exist and are distinct from the Flat Silver ones but I'd love to see actual photographs and detailed instructions for identifying one... something I could use to have BL sellers send the right version. I know that the Ahohkii I have are a different material from the Proto Miru Nuva I dyed recently. and by the way, what's with the 50 cent Proto Mirus on BL? Does anyone know where Pearl Light Gray Avohkiis came from? Someone want to send me a few?
