I was too into vegetarian-bashing when I was a kid to give it a try.
Then one day I went to Panda Express (a fast food Chinese chain that shows up in mall food courts) and decided to try lo mein with "fried bean curd".
Yo, the stuff ROCKED.
Later I realized it was what "tofu" was.
The thing with tofu, it's somewhat bland on it's own, but it assumes the flavor of how you cooked it and what you cooked it with.
I'm at a point now where I like its original taste... I get a block of it, drain it, cut it into a grid pattern and eat it as it is with chopsticks. Has an "earthy" taste to it.
Be warned though... aside from making just regular old tofu, every manufacturer also has NASTY versions of it sitting next to it, like "grilled" type or "asian seasoning" type... bleargh... STAY AWAY. It's good on it's own.
Think I'll make some teriyaki stir fry and throw a few chunks into the boiling oil. This topic has made me hungry.
