Thats odd I'd think they'd stop having that with the end of the threat of communism. I don't read sci fi I've only read a few, If you could name some examples, anyway my ideas for possible reasons. -9/11 and a state of paranoia - cynicism - people cynical of our rapidly growing technology based consumer culture - a realisation that material wealth and technological advances are not as important as basic emotional values.

To be honest I doubt many people would want to read stories like that, or write them without the specific intent of stirring controversy. I just hope people don't start writing stories that are borderline on the rules like they do in art. -
Here I 100% agree with you. That is why it bothered me when you said people were getting stupider. Being a pessimist might be OK doing it yourself, cause as Richroll said you are pleasantly suprised, but they overlook how much of a downer it is for everyone else.
