Because I had nothing better do to, I decided to see if I could work out how fast someone wearing a Kanohi Kakama could run at, just out of pure curiosity. So, according to Tale of the Toa, Pohatu uses his mask of speed to travel from Po-Koro in Po-Wahi to Mount Ihu in Ko-Wahi in under a minute. This is the only time in canon that I can think of that gives us both a distance travelled and a timeframe for that travel when the Kanohi Kakama is used, so I wanted to see if I could use that to figure out what speed a Kakama user is capable of moving at. The official labelled map of the Island of Mata Nui puts the island’s length at approximately 357 Kio. A Kio is equal to 1.37km, so that means that the Island of Mata-Nui is approximately 489.09km long. I was able to then use this to count how many pixels that length represents in the official map of the island, which worked out at being 1480 pixels long. This meant that overall, this map is at a resolution of 330m per pixel (489.09km / 1480 pixels = 0.33 km or 330 meters). All I needed to do then was figure out the distance between Po-Koro and Mount Ihu, both of which are labelled on the map. Unfortunately, at this map’s scale it is impossible to tell the exact route that Pohatu would have taken and therefore it is not possible to take into account any twists and turns he may have taken along the way or take into account the change in elevation as he went up and down the mountains of Ko-Wahi on his way to Mount Ihu. I therefore simply took the straight-line distance for this calculation, as this would be the absolute minimum distance he would have had to travel. I also decided to put the time value at a full minute, as the book and BS01 do not give specifics, only that the journey took “under a minute” – so let’s just estimate it at exactly one minute for ease of use. By taking these numbers I won’t be able to get the actual speed Pohatu was going on this journey, but I will be able to calculate the bare minimum speed he would’ve needed to be travelling at, as any shortening of the timeframe or any additional distance that the actual journey would have taken would only increase the final speed measured. By drawing a line on the map from Po-Koro to Mount Ihu and then counting the pixels, I found that the straight-line distance between these two points was 386 pixels long, which works out at being 127,380 meters. The equation for speed is speed = distance / time, so all I needed to do was plug in the numbers: Speed = distance / time Speed = 127,380m / 60 seconds Speed = 2,123 meters per second That is an absolutely insane speed. That is over 6 times the speed of sound. And remember, this is the absolute bare minimum speed Pohatu could have been travelling at, meaning the actual speed of the Kakama is even faster than this, probably by a significant margin. I wanted to know how fast the Kakama was. Turns out it is fast.

Finally finished, five months after starting the initial drafting/ paper version, abandoning it a lot, and four test subjects later (sponsored by old jeans): Pattern made by tracing photos of the Kakama off of a monitor, lots of altering, and some initial regret for attempting it instead of a flatter mask. The finished mask. It consists of an outer Kakama mask that snaps onto a 3-ply under-mask with nose wire and filter pocket. Yes, excessive photos, sorry. Photo Tutorial Album and Pattern: *UPDATE* It's now on Instructables for ease of use. https://www.instructables.com/3D-Bionicle-Kakama-Cloth-Costume-Mask-Pattern/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/189713610@N04/albums/72157718198104108 Info: Note: I have no qualifications to make tutorials, this was a total experiment, and was my first attempt at some of these techniques/stitches. Made this one in size L to hopefully accommodate most faces. Under-mask can be sized up or down according to your preference (See extra “block” pattern pieces for all sizes. Just cut out the pattern along the labeled line with your desired size). *The measurements are in US customary units. *For personal/non-commercial use only, please. *All of the seam allowances are ¼” unless otherwise stated. Pre-wash all fabrics on warm or cold, prior to cutting to prevent shrinkage. Preshrink your interfacing in hot water before use. Color-fasting may be necessary if the fabric dye “bleeds” when wet. Iron fabrics before cutting. *Disclaimer: Mask has not been tested for effectiveness and does not replace personal protective equipment like medical or construction masks. This mask does not prevent, protect from, or reduce viruses or diseases. Size guide for under-mask: 2XL is for extra large faces and loosely fits on the neck. It was designed to accommodate facial swelling. 2XL dimensions: Length across center: 11” Width/height: 6.75”. XL is designed to fit males & females with larger builds. XL dimensions: H 6” W 8.5”. L fits average males and females. L dimensions: H 5.25” W 9”. Model shown is wearing size L. M fits average females, smaller males and teenagers. M dimensions: H 5” W 7.5”. Care Instructions: Hand wash cold, air dry. May be ironed after fully dry. Do not iron the straps. Terms, stitches, and knots used. Grain line: used to indicate that the pattern piece should be cut parallel to weft. Seam line: Line on which fabric is stitched. Notches: Small marks to align pieces accurately. Baste: Temporary stitches that are later removed. Buttonhole stitch. Running stitch. Lock stitch. Backstitch. Prick stitch. Tailors knot, abbreviated TK in tutorial. French knot. Time needed: Varies, I took 18.5 hrs to cut and assemble mine. Tools/Supplies needed: Sewing machine. Overlock machine/serger (Optional, zigzag stitching works too). Iron and ironing board. Towels and old pillowcase (for fusing interfacing). Press cloth (small piece of thin cotton fabric, laid over garment to prevent shine-marks during pressing). Tailor’s ham or towels wadded into a ball shape. Tailor’s clapper or a small, smooth block of wood. Scissors and pinking shears/zigzag scissors. Tracing wheel. Pins and hand sewing needles. Point turner or chopstick. Disappearing ink fabric marker and white chalk. Steam-a-Seam 1/4” tape roll. Fabri-tac. Fray-check seam sealant. Washable glue stick or Lapel Stick. Two 6” long, ⅛” or ¼” wide elastic pieces for ear straps (Or stretch tube straps) 1-1.5 yards of 5/8” soft elastic in a color of your choice. I used cream/tan. One nose wire. I use soft, plastic coated wires that are similar to twist ties. One metal, sew-on snap. Thread: Polyester sewing machine thread in white, a color that matches your under-mask, and one to match your outer-mask. 6 strand embroidery floss in a color that accents your mask outer color. 1 strand white embroidery floss or basting thread. Beeswax and paper towels for waxing your threads. Ruler or seam gauge. Fabric needed: For the Kakama outer-mask: 2 yards 100% cotton fabric in a color of your choice. This will be used for both the outer and lining. ⅛ yard of leather in accent color for the patch details. 2 yards ShirtTailor interfacing. For the under-mask: 1/4 yard 100% cotton in a color of your choice. I used a color similar to my skin tone. About ½ yard of white muslin for the lining and filter pocket. Hope this makes some amount of sense....If anyone has questions about the construction/techniques, I’ll try to help if I can/send you a source link. Best wishes!

Discarded Introduction: When all hope seemed lost, Toa arrived on the island, in canisters, they went on a quest for their masks, they placed them on the suva, they gained their golden masks, they evolved, their masks evolved, as well. They conquered darkness, they left, the island was evacuated, the Toa left once more, going even farther from their masks, each losing connection to their respective suva. This is not their story, this is, rather, the story of those masks they left behind, the ones that were discarded. Chapter One: "Where am I?" he muttered internally, for he had no mouth of his own, "What is this place?" he questioned once more, he strained to open his eyes, but alas, it was in vain, he had none, it was then he remembered, he was a mask, a piece of armour meant to be worn on one's face. How then, could he think? He wondered, bewildered apon realizing that a simple piece of armour should not have an awareness of its own, he thought back, to see if he had memories...he did, he had memories of a tree, it was peaceful there, quiet, calm...he remembered it burning...he remembered being placed on the face of the one who'd destroyed his home, seeing, for the first time, through his eyes...he remembered getting stronger, a sudden surge of power and change of shape...he remembered the source of this power...he wondered if he could conquer it, bend it to help him in some way...he could feel the power, he could just reach out to it, if he'd had hands...if only he'd had hands...if only he'd had a body, he wanted a body, he wanted the power...he felt the power in his metaphorical clutch...he drained the power, sending it to himself, a surge of power came out from himself, he suddenly realized, gleefully, he had eyes, he could see, he could see the red elemental energy pulling forth metals from all over Ta-Wahi, he could feel it, he was the energy, the energy was his. He forced it to his will, and it obeyed, without thought, he was powerful, he felt his energy bring the metals to himself, he felt it, caused it to, attach them to one another, forming a body, a body, he'd soon have a body. He was overjoyed, for the first time since the peace of that tree, he was happy. The body was almost completed, it had no face, he reached out with the hands of his body, straining to do so through elemental power alone, and grabbed himself, putting himself on the body, in place of a face, he felt himself change once more, this time, not just the mask that was him, but his entire body, he felt his face revert to its original form, and he felt the amalgamation of metals that was his body solidify, into, a work of art, almost, he looked down at himself, no longer straining to move the heavy limbs through elemental strength, the pistons, the muscles, were his, and he commanded them. He raised his arms in triumph, shouting with glee, he covered his mouth...he had a mouth, he could speak, he was no longer a blind, mute, inanimate piece of armour situated on another man's face, he was now a being in his own right, all these thoughts and more soared through his head, and so overjoyed he was, he didn't realize he was floating. When he'd finally calmed himself down enough to be aware of his surroundings, he realized his feet weren't touching the ground, he looked behind himself, and realized he had wings, bronze, flapping, beautiful wings, he was flying...he was flying, he was a discarded Kanohi mask, and he could see, he could speak, he could walk, he could run, he could fly. Surely, this must be a dream, he slapped himself to see if it hurt...he felt pain...he'd never been wounded before, pain hurt, he decided...but this was no dream, he had a body, and he was flying, "I AM THE BRONZE JET!!!" he proclaimed to himself, the top of his previously non-existent lungs, a simple phrase, quite bizarre, admittedly, but with his first words, he'd named himself, and he regretted it not.

[speedster] [Front] [Any last words?] [back] In that back shot you can tell that the silver Kakama is actually a brown Kakama that's been Sharpied, but if I had an actual silver Kakama, I'd have used it, I promise! You can also see (on all the pictures) that the pollen is coming down hard nowadays. Thankfully, Speedster doesn't have allergies. Speedster is a mercenary, always ready to zip into and out of anything for a respectable sum. He's equipped with his trademark seven-league boots, a powerful arm cannon from the forges of Nynrah, and a double-bladed weapon Speedster forged himself from the twisted remains of a squad of Rahkshi he once singlehandedly defeated. His seven-league boots, in combination with his Kanohi Kakama, allow him to move at remarkable speeds; he can reach any location one could walk to from his current location in a handful of strides, although he must know the route in order to do so. He has the willpower to use all the powers of a Great Kanohi that any Toa can, and he uses his Kakama with abandon. Since the mass exodus from the Great Spirit Robot, Speedster has taken the time between jobs to roam the expanses of Spherus Magna, spending his days traversing the landscape in solitude (naturally, as no one could possibly keep up with him). -- What do you think?

I can't really say anything that the title doesn't. Sorry if this wasn't what you were expecting: If you click the thumbnail you can see the whole image on my deviantArt account, which I understand we're allowed to link to now? A problem I have is that I seem to overlook flaws in my art until someone else points them out, after which they're blindingly obvious. So constructively criticise to your heart's content! I mean, some praise would be nice too, if you mean it. But the criticism's more useful to me in the long run.

Does anyone on here have any prototype Kanohi from 2001? I would love to see some pictures if you do, especially if they are one of the six original Great Kanohi.

OK, so this is something that's been nagging at the back of my head for a long time: Exactly how fast does the Kanohi Kakama make you?Let's start with what we know (or more accurately, what i know):1. Pohatu once used his Kakama to run from Po-Koro to Ko-Wahi in less than a minute.2. In the MNOLG, Pohatu seemingly moves fast enough to "teleport" in a sense, seen when fleeing the crumbling Nui Jaga nest.3. Gali reportedly once used her Kakama to vibrate through a wall. What this implies, in my view is that the Kakama allows you to reach levels of speed that are up there with other famous speedsters like Sonic the Hedgehog, and maybe even The FlashJust to make it clear, we're assuming regular Great Kakama here, not the Nuva version, which is why I left out some of Pohatu Nuva's feats with the mask. So, thoughts?
