Nothing like this had ever happened before. He had never calculated for this possibility, simply because he figured that it could never happen. All the recent events--the destruction of two soverign nations, the wars, the near-collapse of the TAP--all that was peripheral. He'd just lost the Chancellory. After a single term in office (the most historic term in Osalieli history, no less) Licht's prospects were looking up and he was easily thirty points up in the polls over his closest competitor. He didn't let up, though, because his paranoia didn't allow him to. Something could happen at the last minute. But it didn't. The first inkling that something was wrong was after the election was over, while the votes were being collected. His closest competitor was showing a much stronger appearance in the election results than anyone had expected. He'd taken almost all of the provinces of Baross, and a similar proportion of Imperium colonies. Licht hadn't even stood a chance, it seemed. And now Licht was left with nothing but a political machine that had no purpose. Certainly, he'd campaign for another term the next time something came about, but--He was distracted by a call over his private line. Very few people had this connection, but the caller ID didn't list any of them. He pushed the "connect" button."Licht." It was painful, almost, to leave the title of Chancellor off of his name."It is good to finally make your acquaintance, Mr Licht." A voice said. "Well, in my real capacity anyway.""Really." Licht said, playing it calm. "May I ask what that capacity is?""Well, first I'll have to ask to meet with you personally. Your protection detail is otherwise occupied, I have seen to that.""I admit you've gotten me curious." Licht said."Ah, your biggest character flaw." There was a thrum of pleasure in the unknown person's voice. "If you step outside, I have your conveyance to a secure location prepared."Licht disconnected the phone and stepped outside. A car was waiting for him, a long black limousine with tinted windows. He stepped inside, and the driver took him to an old warehouse on the outskirts of the city. There, he was ushered into a small surface-to-orbit shuttle, which, he noted with bemusement, had been constructed with materials and technology used in the top-secret development of stealth vessels. The shuttle conveyed him to upper orbit, where he was dropped off on a (similarly stealthed) tiny space station, which had never shown up on any report he'd ever read of Osalieli assets. A quick look around told him why--this was relatively new, and sparkling clean. It was likely only a few months old. There was one door at the end of the hangar. The door concealed a conference room. Around it sat a numer of Osalieli, a few of whom Licht recognized."I'm glad you decided to join us." One of the Osalieli spoke. "Please, have a seat." Licht noticed one unused seat, which he took. "Now, let us get down to business. This is a collection of the brightest political and espionage operators in the Imperium, duly flavored with technical experts. We call ourselves the Citadel, and it is our job to ensure the survival and advancement of the Osalieli race. We are, in essence, the Imperium."I'm sure you're a little confused--there are others who claim that they are the movers and shakers in the government, but frankly, they are smokescreens for us to put our policies into effect. You, Mr. Licht, have been the first Chancellor in a very long time to defy the will of this council, knowingly or not. However, your plans, while not parallel to our own, have safely navigated the Imperium through very treacherous waters. As you have impressed us, we would invite you to become a full member of the Citadel."So that was it. This must have been why he lost--these people engineered his political downfall, to allow him to recende into private life, and to become a policymaker with them. It took seconds for him to decide--a group capable of that kind of operating had massive amounts of power at their disposal, power he would love to have access to."I accept."~+~It didn't take long for different policies, ones that would conslidate the Imperium's severely-lacking power, to go into effect. All but two of the Osalieli's Medium vessels would be drydocked until further notice, as well as all of their Small ships. Accordingly, the Osalieli fleets were ordered to return to the nearest planet in the Imperium. Three colonizers would be constructed on Masada, Ithaka, and Gallia.Diplomats were sent to the world of Coriallum, universal map designator 1-35. In the event that the Pact wanted to discuss (or threaten, which was just fine by the Osalieli) the situation, then they would be available. For now, however, the eyes of the Imperium would be turned--mostly--inward.

HeavyMetalSunshineSister Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 IC(Kalarii Trade): When they made contact, the Kalarii trade vessels visiting Diemawr space were informed, as the Treanuans and Natsirt had once been informed, that the Diemawr Empire was not doing well financially, and that trade would be impossible until certain circumstances - vague references were made to a plague on the capitol planet and a catastrophic meteor strike on some other world, along with, apparently, riots on every occupied Syrrinx world - improved. It was a flat lie on all fronts, of course, but caution permitted - indeed, encouraged - deception in certain cases. Espionage was one thing, but a convenient excuse for keeping aliens out of Imperial space until they saluted the proper flag was quite another, and so much better in the eyes of the Diemawr.
