stoked for that, I absolutely loved RTJ2. probably my favorite hip-hop album of 2014, along with Sadistik's Ultraviolet.

and on that note..

I guess I'm one of the few people on here who likes rap. I mean, I also like most music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but I like rap just as much. My favorite rappers are Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Macklemore, and The Game

it's not one of my favorite genres, but I dig it. I'm more of a fan of old-school hip-hop and alternative hip-hop than most of what's popular today, though. Public Enemy, Nas, Beastie Boys, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Sadistik, Death Grips, and Run the Jewels are some of my favorites.

New Björk album, Vulnicura, to come out in March.

I'm pretty psyched.

Edit:

Just heard that Origa passed away yesterday. Really saddening news.

Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the vast majority of her music, but I absolutely adore her work with Yoko Kanno on the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex soundtrack. I've listened to Inner Universe more times than I can count.

Rest in peace, Origa

so this is absolutely huge news:

New Albums To Be Released On Fridays Globally Starting This Summer

Following consultation with artists, musicians unions, record companies and retailers, it was confirmed today that the release day for new music will be aligned internationally on a Friday.

Release days currently vary from one country to another, causing frustration for consumers when music fans in other parts of the world can access new releases before them. As well as helping music fans, the move will benefit artists who want to harness social media to promote their new music. It also creates the opportunity to re-ignite excitement and a sense of occasion around the release of new music.

The move to an aligned global release day will also reduce the risk of piracy by narrowing the gap between release days in different countries.

Retailers internationally are committed to working with the labels and artist communities to ensure the successful implementation of the move to Friday.

From summer 2015, new albums and singles will be released at 00:01 local time on Fridays. Music consumers everywhere will know to look for new releases on Fridays regardless of where they are.

Consumer research by TNS across seven markets shows Friday and Saturday as the most preferred days for new music release among consumers who expressed an opinion. More than two thirds of those with a preference (68%) chose Friday or Saturday.

The move to a global release day follows several months of discussions between group representing retailers, record companies, artists and musicians unions.

The global release day consultation has included:

* IFPI, representing some 1300 record labels worldwide;
* FIM, representing musicians’ unions and associations globally
* Featured Artists Coalition representing UK performers;
* Leading retailers and representative organisations, including Australian Music Retailers Association (AMRA), E.Leclerc, El Corte Inglés, Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) (UK), HMV, Italian Association of Specialist Consumer Electronics Retailers (AIRES), Media-Saturn, Music Business Association (Music Biz US), Mondadori Retail, the Orchard, Rdio, Spotify, Napster.

I like this change, honestly. I like it a lot.

edit:

also im probably the only one cuz i preordered it and its not out officially until tomorrow but if anyone else here has the new modest mouse record

HOW GOOD IS THIS

its like the best parts of We Were Dead meshed with the best parts of Good News, but never losing that distinct modest mouse style

except on Lampshades On Fire, idk about that one. i'll have to see if the rest of the record grows on me, but i do know that Pistol and Pups To Dust are aces

I was told to come here with this instead of making a new thread. Does anyone know of some more artists that do this kind of style? The tags say "trip hop" and "breakbeat", but neither really fit.

Either a genre or similar artists would be fine if you know of any. Thanks in advance.

If Boards of Canada released an EP one or two years after an LP, as they have done twice in the past (MHTRTC-INABPOITC 2 years, The Campfire Headphase-Trans-Canada Highway 1 year) then we are due for one this year, as Tomorrow's Harvest was released in 2013. THAT would make this year way better.

Kamelot just released their new album, Haven, on Tuesday. I hate it when the first track is too amazing to stop looping! (But I hate it in a good way)

It's blowing me away for sure!

I'm not as dedicated of a fan to Kamelot. I have some other bands that I am more dedicated to ;)

I'm not preording Breaking Benjamin's new album, but I'm getting more excited for it as they release more singles from it.

since I can't post this in the Official Metal Topic without double posting, may as well post it here:

Lamb of God has released a new song, "Still Echoes", for streaming and have announced that their new album VII: Sturm Und Drang will be available this July. there's artwork available and a pre-order up.

song is killer. reminds me a bit of Wrath mixed with As the Palaces Burn. artwork kind of gives off a Palaces vibe, too.

Don't think anyone here is into this kind of stuff, but I've got to say that I am super into the new collaboration album between Merzbow, Balázs Pándi, Mats Gustafsson and Thurston Moore - Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper. It's a free improvisation album, with healthy doses of noise and free jazz.

This might actually be my album of the year thus far. Not that I expect it to stay there for long with the myriad of releases I'm excited for right around the corner, but still, for now it shall remain.

Merzbow is really on point with the collaborations lately. This, the MERZXIU album with Xiu Xiu from earlier this year, and of course Full of *Heck* from last year. It would be nice to see him do one with Boris again as well.

I am also hyped for the new Breaking Benjamin. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I love their stuff and I hope this new lives up to the past albums. It certainly seems promising.

What is/was your favorite BB album? And yeah, I don't really think of them as a guilty pleasure...that title belongs to both Kelly Clarkson & Katy Perry lol

I'd probably say Phobia, Dear Agony and We Are Not Alone are tied and which one I like best changes depending on my mood. :P Dear Agony used to be my favourite so maybe I'll go with that one for now. And yeah I have a few other more-guilty pleasures like Avril Lavigne and All-American Rejects but BB still fall under the banner of bands I wouldn't normally like much but do, for some strange reason.

I've never heard of this artist, but I found them and they just released an album. Let's see how it is. https://illuminatedpaths.bandcamp.com/album/coincidental

EDIT: apparently it's a bunch of artists and they release a few albums at a time? I'm a little confused, but I like some of the music and not others.

Finnish apocalyptic post-punk/death-rock band Grave Pleasures, the band formerly known as Beastmilk, have announced that their new album (second altogether, debut under the new name) will be released on September 4 via Sony Columbia. it's titled Dreamcrash and the album art is stunning.

Beastmilk's debut Climax was my favorite album of 2013 and honestly one of my favorite albums of all time, so I'm positively stoked to hear this next chapter unfold.

We're past the years halfway point so what are everyone's favorite albums of 2015 so far?

My number one pick would have to be Kacey Musgrave's sophomore effort "Pageant Material";  well worth the wait and a great follow up from one of county music's outliners.  Zella Day's debut album "Kicker" has some good indie pop and would be my second choice.

The Plague Within by Paradise Lost, Freedom by Refused, Frozen Niagara Falls by Prurient, Warpath, Urban Dance and Asia by Boris, A N D by tricot, Into the Shadows by Anoice, Never Were the Way She Was by Colin Stetson & Sarah Neufeld, Atheist's Cornea by Envy, Beware the Sword You Cannot See by A Forest of Stars, Enki by Melechesh, Graveward by Sigh, and Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper by Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson, Balázs Pándi & Thurston Moore.

Nice mix of metal, post-hardcore and experimental/noise/drone type of stuff. The year had a pretty slow start, but there's been lots of fantastic stuff over the last few months.

Was searching around Youtube for updates on Stratovarius' new album and someone has a decent audio of a new song of theirs on the radio! I'm looking forward to hearing the other songs :)

So I'm curious, what is everyone's favourite workout/exercise music? Do you have a playlist, or do you just listen to specific albums or put an artist on shuffle?

Personally, I like to just listen to an album, although a playlist is sometimes nice too. Obviously lots of metal and other heavy music works great, but in particular I enjoy Rage Against the Machine's first and third albums, earlier Refused albums, and Strapping Young Lad's City and Alien. Recently I've been listening to Kvelertak's self-titled album a lot when I go for a run.

I also find that faster-paced industrial and electronic is fantastic as well, with stuff like the more recent albums by Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, and KMFDM.

I have a playlist for my bike rides. I change it up every couple weeks to adjust to my shifts in musical taste/attitude.

When I first started, I had the heaviest/most aggressive songs in my library on the workout list; artists like Five Finger Death Punch, Blood Stain Child, The Unguided and Trivium, along with the heaviest songs from Sevendust, Evergrey, and Amaranthe.

I'm a "melodic" music fan, though. I love almost anything that has big anthemic melodies, solid beats/grooves, and that sort of thing. So gradually, my playlist has adapted from the aggressive workout list to stuff that keeps me going. Evergrey & Amaranthe proved to be great for my Biking, so Mercenary, Stratovarius and Symphony X have replaced all the aforementioned artists with The Unguided being the exception because they're pretty melodic as well.

I just put my favorite groove based songs in a playlist on shuffle and ride for about 40 minutes to an hour and the music keeps me going.

I like to work out to the album "A Trick of the Tail" by Genesis. There's a few moments in there where it switches between steady and invigorating.

time to drag this topic up from the depths to ask a simple question: what has everybody been listening to lately?

also, for people who might not have posted in this topic before, what kind of music do you like? do you have any favorite band/artists? heck, people who have posted here before should answer this too. we're probably due for a refresher, especially knowing how much people's tastes can change.

(and also obligatory "what are people's favorite albums of the year so far" question since we can't seem to go half a page without bringing that up)

I've been listening to a lot of 80's music lately, specifically Genesis. Which albums? I really like Genesis & Invisible Touch, but I've been listening to "No Reply at All" and "Home by the Sea" very frequently while doing homework.

In the metal world (yeah, I still like that), I've been listening to the new Sevendust & Trivium albums recently as well.

I've been listening to a lot of black metal of various kinds over the past couple of weeks, being quite in the mood for it. Both listening to bands I haven't heard yet, and going deeper into the discographies of ones I have. From the bunch of albums there, I've especially enjoyed Verisäkeet by Moonsorrow and Scenes From [Heck] by Sigh.

And sure, let's do the favourite bands/artists thing again. Quickly off the top of my head:

Ihsahn, Emperor, Refused, Devin Townsend, Boris, Emilie Autumn, Paradise Lost, Mutyumu, Midori, Sigh, Shining (the Norwegian one), Arcturus, Ulver, Moonsorrow, Skinny Puppy, Skold, Portishead, Bjork, Kvelertak, The Dresden Dolls, Cult of Luna, Clutch, Dir en Grey, Alice Cooper, and tons more.

As I've mentioned, been listening to a lot of black metal lately, but I'm still as into avant-garde and experimental metal, progressive metal, industrial, dark cabaret, and other genres as I ever was.

I've been listening to a lot of new releases (of which my favorite right now is Ellie Goulding's new album) as well as some albums that came out this year, but I haven't gotten around to listening to yet (Purity Ring, Kelsea Ballerini).  Since, they're not any more albums I'm looking forward to, I've started listening to some artists whose music I've been meaning to explore; I just finished listening to everything from Paramore recently.

And, of course, I'm always listening to my favorites from my favorite artists who are: Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, Chvrches, Marina and the Diamonds, Britt Nicole, Kacey Musgraves, Krystal Meyers, Halsey, and Charli XCX.
