Well, I lost the first version of this post, so that's embarrassing. Sorry for the kind of patchiness (and cheesiness) of this. I guess I'll skip the boring stuff... No I won't.

Well, nobody really reads this blog, so I guess there is no point in posting this, but I still want to. As you know, BZP was down for a while, and probably lost many members. I regret to announce that I am one of them. Life came and was all like "Hey, I'm here. Whatevs." I wished there was another way, but there isn't. I had been turned off of Bionicles for a long time now, I only stayed for AWIII. Minutes ago, I opened GIMP, intending to create a comic, but I just didn't feel it. I had moved on. I realized that I could do more, but I had to let go of BZP. I had stopped creating hastily made comics with cheap punchlines, and started creating (my version of) art. Over the downtime, I had been gone for a month, studied for a test out exam, did not pass the exam, and worked on a huge project. School started, and I got a role in a play. This whole time I was telling myself that I would start the comics up again, though somewhere I knew I wouldn't. Over the downtime, there were laughs had, many many many many tears cried, and many things thrown in anger. NONE of them, had to do with BZP. As I said, I had moved on. While I haven't achieved any of my goals, such as becoming a well known, prominent member that everyone knows and likes, starting dailies, and Becoming the comic maker everyone knows. I'm okay with that. So, before I go, I would like to thank some people, well, every person. Thank you BZP. Thank you the people I knew, and the people I didn't. Thank you the few that looked up to me, and the many I looked up to. Thank you to the comic makers who had put up with my petering and noobieness, and thank you to the couple of brand new comic makers that asked me for help. Thank you to JMSOG for being a friend in real life, and BZP. Thank you to Nuparurocks, for being the one that had to put up with the most of my pesky noobishness. Thank you to King Joe for being the first admirer of my comics. You may see me in the Artwork forums from time to time. If you do, PM me, and I'll tell you a story. Not of the "Good Ol' Days", but a story of a boy, who found a distraction from the real world, discovered a talent, and then moved on to bigger and better things. My biggest fear in life has been to never be remembered. So I say, with all of the ego I possess: Please, remember me. Not as the comic maker that left, not as the annoying noob, but as ThatOneGuy. ThatOneGuy who let go. ThatOneGuy who accepted life. So, as much as I hate to say this: Good bye BZP.

This has been ThatOneGuy, Just Thought You Should Know.

  1. I've been off for like the past year or two including the 6 month downtime. I miss anything other than HeroForce/Bionicle ending? I barely recognize anyone anymore :/

it feels really odd seeing BZP back

and with a RAD NEW LOOK

    it's crazy

I just deleted a few old draft entries from three years ago

it gave me one of those 'amused-but-also-embarrassed-at-your-younger-self half-smiles'

so while this place is back I doubt I will be much?

I can't even remember what I did here near the end of it?

    huh

go listen to Los Campesinos! so you can fangirl with me over them or something

if anyone even cares (probably not!)

  3. With the return of BZP forums, KanohiJournal Publications (formerly KanohiJournal) will be setting up relevant forum material over the next few days.

As there have been major structural and purpose revamps, the KJP is now more diversified than ever before. This means we will need a bit of time for us to propagate our content across the related sections on BZP. Meanwhile, please visit the official KanohiJournal Publications website, where can you check up on the first chapters of Mata Nui Nui's Origins serial, along with the first fan-made BIONICLE book and more.

  4. I just realized I don't actually have anything to say.

    Good day.

I have a slight question about BZPower.

...Why exactly do we allow discussion of Mass Effect in CoT but censor out the word cool dude?

So i made a blog. You might say a noob is running this.

    And you're right!

Allow me to finish off with a poem.

    Roses are red

    Violets Are blue

    This line doesn't rhyme

    Neither does this one

Maybe my next entry will be better....

  6. For those of you who weren't aware, The Three Virtues podcast has just posted an interview with Dark709! Well actually, the interview has been up for almost three weeks now, but I only discovered it was up yesterday. :P It's great fun to listen to if you haven't already - it's nice to finally hear the dude's voice, and it's funny just for all the awkward, breathless pauses as Eljay and Kahi try to avoid having a heart attack while talking to the most famous BZPower comic maker ever. (On a side note to the TTV cast, I really enjoyed Alena in this interview - in past interviews I found her somewhat distracting, but here I think she really managed to anchor the interview, perhaps because Eljay and Kahi had so many awkward pauses...)

But there was a very specific part of the interview that really intrigued me, and that was when Dark was asked about what might make for a not-so-good comic series. Here's the quote of his answer:

DARK709: When people get too immersed in the storyline of their comics, it can become really complicated and then newcomers who try to read the comics it will be really hard to follow...you're not going to want to be confused by the storyline and see tons of inside jokes that don't make any sense to you. I think it's important to appeal to a really wide audience, with a simple storyline, really good humor, and funny characters.

KAHI: What about people who right off the bat want more of a serious, plot-based series? What do you have in advice for that?

DARK709: I think history shows us that a lot of the series that were completely focused on the storyline and had no humor didn't really fare so well. Didn't get many posts and everything. I mean the top three most popular comic authors, Nuparurocks, Gavla and myself, focus on a lot of humor and everything. I still think it's important to focus on storyline, but just not so much that your whole series is focused around it. Except for if you want to do a movie, where its cool visuals and everything, I think it's easier for people to watch an animation rather than a comic when they're trying to follow a complex storyline.

(Kahi mentions seeing plot-based series that work in some occasional jokes and a little humor)

DARK709: That's the kind of mix that I think is important. But also if you're going to do a storyline comic that's just focused on the storyline, I think you're going to have to really commit yourself to do amazing graphics and make a comic like every two days. I know Gavla releases a comic every two days and his comics are really storyline focused. I think it's important to get those comics out really fast.

Now there's a lot to go into here, so I'll start with a bit of a summary - there is some good advice about how to work with a serious comic series, but there's also some assertions about the forum I don't entirely agree with. But starting with where Dark ended during this exchange, I think there is some good advice: have some decent graphics (which I'd say works for you if you're doing a humor-based series as well) and be consistent with your updates - you are telling a story, so you got to make sure you actually tell it, lest people get bored waiting for the next part.

But the part that raised doubts for me was where Dark said that storyline-based comic series haven't fared well on BZPower, which didn't seem to fit my experience of the comic forum. Dark backs up his statement by saying that the most popular comic makers on the forum are those who do humor-based series. This is indeed true, but I think it might have more to do with some of the elements that define humor and storyline-based series.

When you're focused on a plot, you're telling a story - and every story has a beginning, a middle, and (most importantly for my argument here) an end (whether such a series actually makes it to the end is a different question altogether, and after telling one story you could jump right into another). But in a humor-based series there generally isn't a definite end unless you impose one on the series. As long as you can match your characters to one humorous situation after another, you can do a strip comic series pretty much forever. So it fits that the longest-running topics on the comics forum would be humor-based series.

But then there's the question of popularity. I do think Dark has a point about the issue of complexity in comic series and how newcomers can get confused with the storyline and inside jokes - this is something I had to deal with when I retired and decided to get more serious about looking at other people's series. But I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. You do narrow your audience when you introduce complexity, but there are people who demand a serious plot-focused series and are willing to invest the time to read it. Ask your parents if they understood the Bionicle storyline when you were following it - most likely they're going to say no, because they didn't take the time that you took to get to know the characters and what was going on. So yes, you might be sacrificing some popularity in doing a complex story, but you also earn some really dedicated, hard-core fans.

But having said all these reasons for why serious series are generally not as popular as humor-based ones, there's still the basic question: is it true? Does history really show that plot-focused, humor-less comic series just don't make it here?

I think I may have found evidence otherwise. Looking through the most popular topics on the forum (in terms of replies), I found several series that were very storyline-focused. Now, there's those series that are heavily story-focused but have a fair amount of humor, like Dark suggested: Generic Quest (50 pages of posts) and Legends of the Matoran (20 pages). But then I found some series that seem to have virtually no humor, and were still popular: The Mercenus Chronicles (31 pages), The Fourth Wall (22 pages, almost double the number of comics), and The Legend Of Destr (17 pages). However, all these examples are defunct series - probably the best example of an active storyline-based series I could think of was Cloud 9, which has little humor but is gaining in popularity - the topic only has five pages so far, but that's not too shabby for a series that's less than a year old. None of these series seemed to have comics being posted every other day like Dark suggested you have to do, but they did all have pretty good graphics, ranging from solid to stellar.

...And then I found it. The series that seemed to contradict everything Dark said about what a serious storyline-based comic series has to do. That's right...I'm talking about Nosferatu. It is a series that is completely focused on storyline, with almost zero humor (in fact, they were really quite dark), the graphics are...well, they're okay for their time but they're still a little amateurish (like I'm one to talk... :P ), and over more than a year he only made 53 comics - not bad, but not exactly every other day. And yet, it's the 20th most popular topic in the comics forum (14th in terms of views!), with 40 pages of posts. I'd say that's faring pretty well. I guess the question then becomes whether there was something unusual about Nosferatu's success, but I don't feel like I'm in a position to knowledgeably answer that.

I get where Dark is coming from here, but I think his interpretation of the comics forum reflects a fairly narrow viewpoint of the forum. We're all guilty of that to some extent, the trick is just to realize there's a whole other side to the forum that you, the casual comic reader, just frankly don't know about. I'm still trying to find that other side of the forum, and I've barely hit the tip of the iceberg. But like I said, there's some good advice from Dark and the interview is still great to listen to. I definitely recommend it, as it gives a good look into someone who is still one of the most dynamic figures in the comics forum.

  8. I have been a ghost here, but decided to stop in and share some life with everyone. Things are rough financially and it is hard to concentrate on Lego, even though I am attending Brickcon this fall.

We went up to the lake last weekend and rode up high to a point named Ascension. Up around 5000 feet, it was gorgeous, and too warm to wear a jacket the whole day out riding. This is bliss and utter peace within.

    Summary:

The year is 3042. The apocalypse has come, a natural travesty courtesy of Nature itself. Wiping out 3/4 of the Earth's population, the travesty has left humankind materially destitute, but spiritually appreciative of what they have left. As the human race begins to awaken to the loving power that exists within themselves, the dark force of Chaos makes its presence known, determined to keep the human race greedy and hateful. It is up to the Ascended to stop it and guide mankind towards its final evolution...Enlightenment.

    --*--*--

Slowly making his way around the vast wasteland, the slim figure's eyes widened as cold gusts of wind whipped through his hair, long robes billowing about his thin frame. Blue eyes stared in a mix of uncertainty and wonder at the barren landscape before him, for up until this journey, he had experienced nothing like it.

His name was Nada, and he was one of the Ascended. At the current moment, he was beginning to wonder why Reverance had sent him to such an odd place. There was nothing of the ###### he had heard so much of. No lake of fire, no flames constantly licking at your feet. No hellish screams of agony, or even eternal darkness.

That is not to say it was pleasant by any means, but rather that it seemed to be a place of quiet sadness rather than all out torture. An aura of chronic sorrow permeated the realm, and Nada had a feeling that if he were to spend a long time here, he'd feel it more acutely, possibly even go mad, at the seeming inability to experience true happiness. Though he could not figure out where they were coming from just yet, moans filled the air, as if in agreement to his ponderings.

Looking around, it did not take long for Nada's gaze to happen upon a rather ornate looking castle in the distance, shrouded in mist. It looked extremely old, as if it had been around for millenia, for pieces of it had crumbled away. He wondered who lived there. Perhaps it was the home of whom he was looking for? He could only hope, for he had been searching for a while, for the ###### god who supposedly lived in this realm.

As he slowly made his way closer to the castle, he couldn't help but wonder again about the man he was sent to find. Just what was a ###### god anyway? Reverance had given decent details as to what a ###### god's job was, but he had no idea as to what the ###### god himself would act or look like. Was he like Yama? Beelzebub? Satan himself? Did he bear resemblance to any religious ###### figure at all?

Nada then realized then that though he was undeniably trespassing, no one had come to greet him or even seemed to be aware of his presence. Hesitantly, he headed forward in apprehension, not knowing who or what he would find. If he found anyone at all for that matter. Once he reached the door, he knocked on it. As if in response, a beastly wail echoed around his ears, it sounded like some sort of huge animal. And just as sudden as it came, the cry stopped, and Nada could hear quiet footsteps approaching the entrance.

His heart raced, barely managing to breathe as the door opened slowly to reveal a figure not much taller than himself, with an intense crimson stare that made the very hairs on Nada's neck stand right up. Long, wild black hair cascaded down to the middle of his back, and he exuded such a menacing aura that made Nada very much aware of just as to how much trouble he could possibly be in. This was definitely the man he was looking for, he could feel it.

"Oh there you are." he said softly. "I have been looking for you for quite some time, Jigoku Kurayami. I'm Nada, pleased to meet you."

The ###### god stared at him. "State your business or get out." Jigoku's voice was low and cold, seemingly unimpressed with the fact Nada knew his name. It was then that he noticed Jigoku was carrying a massive scythe, the weapon resting slightly against his shoulder. Behind him, rested a rather sinister looking hellhound. The Ascendant inwardly grimaced at the idea of being hit by either of them, but he bowed politely anyway.

"I am here on behalf of the Ascended, a group of people devoted to helping mankind achieve inner peace and reach their final existence. We seek your help."

Jigoku stared, nonplussed, and Nada, taking advantage of the silence continued. "I'm sure that given the amount of lost spirits that have wound up in your realm lately, you

are aware of a natural travesty in the human realm has wiped most of mankind out?"

"Yes, I am aware." The ###### god crossed his arms, scythe still at the ready. "I still fail to see why you need me however."

Nada smiled pleasantly. "Well, contrary to the thoughts of experts prior to this happening, mankind has begun to 'awaken' so to speak, rather than sinking to the animalistic levels of survival they had predicted. We need you, as there is a force that hinders our goal. We refer to it as Chaos. It has started to take hold in some of the remaining humans. It interferes with their ability to achieve Enlightenment. If worst comes to worst, we need your ability to send spirits to where they would be most happy if they prove to be too stubborn to reach such despite our efforts. Chances are you wouldn't have to do a single thing, its just nice to have a failsafe."

Jigoku snarled suddenly, the scythe now inches away from Nada's face, making the Ascendant take a step back. "You're barking up the wrong tree. If you are that knowledgeable of my abilities, you should have also known I cannot leave this realm even if I wanted to." without another word, Jigoku brought down the scythe onto Nada's shoulder, making him scream in pain.

Nada sank to his knees, one hand still clutching his shoulder. "Was...that really necessary?" he asked the other, voice soft. He could feel the deep wound Jigoku had given him regenerating at a rapid pace, but the pain he felt had yet to go away. "All you had to do was tell me you couldn't do the job, there was no need for this."

"Don't lecture me, you pansy arse fairy. I'll just leave you to...wait." Jigoku paused, surprise written in his face. "You are healing yourself?"

"No." Nada simply, choosing to blow off the rude comment. He shook his head and struggled to his feet, releasing the part of his shoulder Jigoku tried to cut. Part of his robe was torn and soaked in blood, but that was all that was visible. There was no sign of the wound at all, not even a scar. "My body regenerates of its own accord." said Nada. "It is one of the gifts I developed as an Ascended. I ask you again though, Mr. Kurayami, do you just randomly attack anyone who happens to anger you or passes by your realm?"

"Yes I do." Jigoku sneered. "Now what are you going to do about it?"

"Stay in this realm until you learn not to." said Nada smiling. "Looks like you are currently unfit for the role I offered you anyway."

"The ###### you will! Get off my doorstep, you're trespassing."

"Very well." said Nada, backing away. "I'm not leaving this realm tho."

"Get out of this realm, or I'll remove YOUR spirit."

    "I'm not dead."

"Let me fix that for you."

Nada raised his palms, as if in surrender. It was pretty clear that he was not dealing with the sanest of people. He had to think of an idea though, for Jigoku's help would be invaluable for the Ascended's mission. "Look Mr. Kurayami. I'm sorry to give you a hard time over this, it isn't fair to you. I won't bother you about the job again. However, may I stay in this realm for a bit?"

The ###### god stared at Nada then, a predatory smile gracing his features. "I honestly don't care. Actually, I think I may have a use for you after all."

"A use?" It was Nada's turn to be on the defensive.

"I get...bored." said Jigoku. "Do you play games, Nada?"

The Ascendant blinked, taken aback. "Um, I like to play Parcheesi and Hearts?"

Jigoku laughed. "What kind of sissy games are those? Let me show you a real game." Without another word, Nada felt himself yanked through the door into the castle.

What had he gotten himself into?

  11. If you read What If?, you've probably noticed that my update schedule is grievously slipping. While I promise weekly updates, it's been more like monthly updates. This is because I bit off more than I could chew and started What If? during the summer, thinking I could keep up a chapter a week. As soon as I went back to school the September after the book started (I'm homeschooled, as I've mentioned before in this blog, but I'm taking classes at the local community college), it slowed down. By December the semester was over and I sped up a bit, but now the next semester has begun. In addition, I've recently been having a series of minor family crises, along with extracurricular things, and of course, sometimes even when I can be writing, I'm too stressed or uninspired to put any words on the page. I try not to force myself to write if I'm not feeling up to it, because I've noticed that when I didn't feel like writing at the time I wrote some scene, it's evident in the bland narration and dialogue and lack of anything interesting happening.

Still, Book 7 is a 20-chapter book like most of the others in the series, and it started in late July, so it should have been finished by the start of December. It's inexcusable to only be on Chapter Fourteen when the book started 37 weeks ago. It's already gotten to the point where I will have to delay the start of Book 8. And like I mentioned in my last blog entry, I want the series to be finished by the end of next year. As of this writing, there are 90 weeks until the end of next year, and 60 of them must be used on Book 8, 9 and 10. The remaining 30 are obviously for the intermissions between books. Normally I give myself 8 weeks between books, so if we assume 8 weeks between Book 8 and 9 and 8 weeks between Book 9 and 10, that means I have 14 weeks to work with before I start Book 8. I could safely drag Book 7 out to mid-July and still finish on time. Obviously, I don't want to do that.

However, expecting myself to write the remaining 6 chapters in 6 weeks is too much right now. Being realistic, I expect it to take at least 10 weeks. During school, it can take me almost 3 weeks to write a chapter (obviously depending on the length of the chapter, which varies from around 3000-8000 words), but when I'm off school I can occasionally manage one chapter a week. I seriously doubt that the rest of the book will take more than 14 weeks, especially considering there are only 5 weeks left in the semester, but if it does, I will simply have to shorten the other intermissions. Either way, there will be no intermission between Book 7 and 8. Because of these severe delays, Book 8 will start after Book 7 with no more than a single week of a break. This is well enough, because Book 8 picks up directly after Book 7 ends (I obviously haven't written Book 7's epilogue yet, but depending on if I can make it work as an ending, Book 8's first chapter might literally begin only seconds after the ending of Book 7).

This segues into the next part of my plan: writing ahead. When I started this series, I was updating three times a week. This was because I had written all of Book 1 before I began to post it. If I had done this with subsequent books, we might be seeing nearly year-long breaks between books. Because the books were so short at first (Book 1 was only about 70,000 words - for comparison, Book 7 had hit that mark by Chapter Eleven), I decided I would write them as I posted them. With Book 2, it worked out okay - I stayed ahead of my update schedule until almost the end. As I got more busy though, that became increasingly difficult and with Book 7 I was practically behind the update schedule before the end of the first month of the book.

To mitigate this effect, I'm writing Book 8 before I even finish Book 7. I'm already behind my intended schedule (I wanted to be finished Chapter 5 by now, but I'm only on Chapter 3), but since this is my final year of high school and I shouldn't have a very busy summer, I am hopeful (though not at all making any guarantees) to finish writing Book 8 by September, when I will start college full-time (as opposed to part-time as it is now). Whenever it finishes being posted really depends on when I finish Book 7, but I'm more concerned about staying ahead of my update schedule than I am about the update schedule itself.

It may seem counter-intuitive to be writing two books at the same time. Wouldn't that just make both of them go more slowly? Yes, really, it does, but I've already basically given up on finishing Book 7 with any amount of regularity to my update schedule by now. Please just bear with me until I finish Book 7. As long as I finish it within the next 14 weeks, I'm still on schedule. I am really hoping to finish it before then, so I can have Book 8 written by the end of summer, but I can only write as fast as my circumstances will allow.

By no means have I given up on the series - I will finish it out as long as I'm physically able to do so. Whether I will finish it by the end of 2012, and whether I will manage to provide any regularity to my updates from here on out, I can only make promises, but with this much work put into it, my own death (or losing my arms or something like that :P) is all that's going to stop me from finishing.

Again, I'm really sorry that I've been unable to hold to my promises regarding the update schedule. I've always prided myself on having a story where you could count on there being an update, even if it might be a few days late - not like the multitude of excellent fan fiction I've read only to find that the author has given up or isn't serious about updating regularly. But I've fallen into that myself now. Serves me right to make such steep promises, I suppose. But rest assured, any readers I still have - I am still here, still writing, and doing the best I can to keep putting out updates.

As many of you know, there are homosexual banners going round at the moment. And a lot of you people have a problem with it. But some people stood up for them...

These people are a little thing called 'open minded'. D'you know why? Because gayness isn't wrong. I'm a bisexual, and I'm proud of it. Yeah, I've had boyfriends, and they were all awesome people!

It's a natural thing for God's sake! Those intensely religous people are condemning a group of people for being themselves! Now, I don't often get angry over the internet, because it is pointless; but when so many people are against a part of me for no real reason, I just feel so much rage at them. Can you blame me for that? No.

I think that if your God condemns people for such a harmless and totally natural way of being, then I don't want to follow him. I was on the BNG chatbox the other day, and talking to two members. We were talking about the gay picture fad on BZP, and they just went mental! They said it's 'sickening' and 'offensive'. Do you wanna know what I find offensive? Prejudice!

And when I heard them say that, my stomach just turned. I felt so alone, and it was just making me sad. I was so offended that I asked to be banned for a week.

Now let me ask you this, homophobes:

Why is gayness wrong? Give me a proper and logical reason.

That's my thoughts on this fad.

P.S. Is there any kind of petition to allow the banners?

  14. This is what I've written as part of a paper (essay format, supposedly) that I'm turning in tomorrow. Honest to goodness, word for word.

Consider the effectiveness of the movie in communicating its message. As a tool of communication, what are its strengths and weaknesses?

The film is quite effective in communicating its message. It scares people into germophobia and educates them on the worst-case scenario. Its strengths include fake blood, crying children, scared families, desperation, death (all of which are very good for getting people to relate to the film on an emotional level for more effective inundation), an old friend who is haunted by past wrongs, a helicopter chase, and explosions. Its weaknesses include not enough footage of gory disease, making the gullible audience think that an antivirus can be isolated, created, and distributed to an entire town in less than a day, and not enough explosions.

Well, I finally decided to start a blog so welcome one and all.

On another note, this will act as a functioning replacement for Boxtus Arena, MT's Blog.
