EDIT: Also, I like Game Theory. They've made mistakes (10ft tall Wario, tsk tsk) but they're still fairly reliable.

After the Rosalina theory, I lost most respect I had for Game Theory. MatPat's very good at not thinking things through. To his credit, he has had some pretty interesting and even well supported theories, but for every good one, I feel he has one just as terrible.

Really? Now, explain to me why you think the Rosalina theory went hooey. I thought it was one of his better ones.

better than a freaking 10 foot tall Wario, that's for sure.

The only theories I can think of that I disagree with were the "Potions and Power Bands" one and the first FNAF theory.

Oh, and aspects of FNAF 3, but most of it was pretty solid.

  2.

It was designed to be overwhelming difficult.

    [citation needed]

it was just something different. it's not even difficult once you learn to properly abuse rolling and how to position yourself. why does combat need to be mindless button mashing?

Exactly... It's more mindless than any other game I've ever played, save for the LEGO games and Mario. I don't find "roll combat" interesting.

Also, yes, the game was designed to be difficult. Everyone and their mother praises it as well as most any other Souls game for it's "marked difficulty." If it's not designed to be hard, why does EVERY SINGLE SOULS GAME GET PRAISE FOR BEING HARD?

Because most people are used to games that let them rush in, guns blazing, with no regard for surroundings. Souls punishes this line of thinking by slapping you around for being careless. This leads to the exaggerated difficulty the games supposedly have- not helped by reviewers boasting about difficulty, who are notoriously baaaaaad at games. The games were not designed as being difficult- they were designed as games that the FROM Soft team thought would be fun.

    • Fallout 1 and 2 (especially 2)
    • Fallout: NV (especially on Hard)
    • Half-Life
    • Resistance 1 and 3
    • CoD 1 and 3 (aka the only good games in the franchise I've played)
    • Daggerfall and Morrowind (especially at Very High (DGRFL) and +100 (MRWD)
    • Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

These are (with the possible exceptions of F:NV) all games that make you pay if you don't pay attention. And all of them do it so much better. All of them have much better combat, all of them have fair difficulty, all of them are nice and fluid and button-mashing is to a minimum, and none of them are Dark Souls.

And, again, DaS was designed to be hard. When your marketing slogan is "You Will Die" and your special edition is the "Prepare to Die" Edition, you're designing your game with difficulty in mind. Now, it's not always that hard =/= not fun, but hard does not always equal fun (looking at you, Lost Levels.)

And, again, the various open world/Metroidvania titles in my little list. Most if not all of them are really good about telling you where to go, not how to get there. Dark Souls rarely even does that.

  3. I didn't say Mario combat was "button-mashing," sans Fire Flower, I mean it's rather... uninteresting. It's not a game built around combat. Of course, Mario makes up for it by being freaking awesome at platforming (something Dark Souls is not.)

But, yeah, LEGO games are button-mashy.

  5. Dang it, stop giving us good ideas! Now I have to scrap the train idea and work on that one instead, cause it's so much cooler!

All kidding aside, great idea. I'll probably still be working on the train idea, so someone else is free to gobble up Silent Hill.

  6. i'm gonna guess and say you don't like the combat because you aren't used to it, it's difficult because you aren't used to the combat, and you're frustrated because you aren't used to the combat. that's the same thing three times. a lack of interesting things is blatantly untrue because it has one of the coolest lores in recent memory as well as a really cool storytelling system AND a very creative art design. i personally like that there's a lot of exploring you can do, but different strokes i guess. the menu systems are user friendly either, i'll admit.

No, I got used to the combat fairly quick. I just didn't like it.

It was designed to be overwhelming difficult. I think a good example would be comparing to Japanese shumps. I'm not some ancient samurai. I don't play games to test my honor or courage. I play games to relax and enjoy myself. If I'm spending more time yelling at the game than not, I'm not relaxing and or enjoying myself.

I didn't really care for the game's lore. Sorry, just not that big a fan.

Also, I like exploring, but Dark Souls seemed rather dull to me. If I want an explorative game, I'll either play Fallout: NV, Skyrim, Super Metroid, or Symphony of the Night. Dark Souls wasn't interesting to me.

  7. OOC: Since no one answered, I'll assume I can spawn an assassin.

IC Eponine/DB Assassin [Narsis - The Lucky Guar]

Bloody ######, the lot of 'em.

As Eponine got up to go and find a room for the night, she felt a hand grabbed her shoulder. Turning around, she saw a tall Redguard, dressed in the same armor she was wearing, readying his dagger.

    "Aw, ######!"

Moving out of the way to avoid the assassin's dagger, she drew her kopis and assumed a fighting stance. The assassin was unimpressed.

"Sorry, Eppy, but you're done for."

"Guys!" She yelled in Kelh and Mathyn's direction. "A little help here!"

The assassin dropped his dagger and drew a steel scimitar, and assumed a fighting stance of his own.

  8. Yes, because the aliens on my house are purple pizza eaters.

Is "plenty" an appropriate answer to "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck, assumings woodchucks can chuck, will chuck and have chucked wood?"

  9.

Yeah... My Xbox doesn't like the internet, meaning multiplayer in any form is a no-go. The game was meant to be completed with multiplayer on, yet I can't use the multiplayer function, meaning I've lost a very key component of gameplay. It's like playing Journey singleplayer. It's not good.

I quite enjoyed Dark Souls without multiplayer. I couldn't experience all that the game had to offer, of course, but I wouldn't say that makes the game "not good."

No, the lack of multiplayer itself doesn't make it "worst game ever," but when you have a game built around a combat system that I simply don't like, coupled with extreme difficulty, a lack of interesting things, constant hairpulling frustration, a confusing maze game and an inventory screen that lies...

    Bleh.

Also, I saw Hodor edited his post to include Egoraptor's hating on OoT because "IT'S NOT LttP!" Hodor's argument is strawmanning Egoraptor's because he had a genuine reason for hating on OoT; he saw it to be dull and repetitive and LttP did combat so much better (which, IMHO, it did.)

  10. IcarusBen: No, paddleboats are even more advanced. In order to have a character own a paddleboat, you need to write a 30-page essay detailing how exactly your character managed to pull off such an impossible feat and get a legendary paddleboat. Then you must pay 5 € (or your regional equivalent) for the Paddleboat DLC.

Eh, no thanks. I have a PS4 I'm saving up for.

I thought paddleboats would be less advanced, considering how they work.

  11. You can have a ship with a steam engine, but the technology is fairly advanced so there needs to be an explanation for how your character managed to get a steam-powered ship. High-ranking navy officers of the Hand could have access to steam ships, for example. And yes, you can have a paddleboat.

The Hand doesn't tolerate Skakdi, but other factions do. Some Skakdi survived the genocide, but their numbers aren't too great.

As long as these crazy powers aren't OP, you're going to see them. Although powers can't be crazy if they're not OP, so no, you're not going to see them.

Privateers are mentioned several times. They're mostly employed by the Alliance, but currently there's peace between the Hand and the Alliance so they can't do much privateering, just regular pirating. For now, at least.

Do paddleboats fall under the same restrictions regular steam ships do?

  12. @Hodor

Actually, he did play the game. Episode 68, the Beardman's Plight. To my knowledge, he completed it. 100% completed.

Firstly, just because "it's mistranslated" doesn't mean it has an excuse for outright lying to the player. If an item says "regenerates health," I'll assume it "regenerates health." If it doesn't regenerate health and I've wasted my one gift, then I'll be pretty grumpy.

Secondly, just because something is doable without an item doesn't make it fun without an item. Rule of Fun is in full effect here, and if something's not fun, I don't want to be playing it.

Thirdly, just because a game is a Metroidvania doesn't give it an excuse for not telling you where to go. The greatest Metroidvania game, IMHO, was Super Metroid, and (shock of all shocks) it told you where to go. In 1994. This is not rocket science, people. It's just standard game design.

Fourthly, just because something has multiplayer doesn't mean everyone gets to use multiplayer. Case and point, I'm playing DS on a 360. I do not currently have XBL Gold, but even if I did, my Xbox's internet is pretty much...

  13. I do think it's just you, but I won't argue with the newly-appointed forum assistant.

As for genuine criticism... Something about Nasaura not being the Nassau expie kinda irks me, but apart from that, everything seems to check out. I like it. It's got a good plot, everything in it works well... I do have a question though; can I have a ship with a steam engine and/or a paddleboat?

  14. IC Eponine [Narsis - The Lucky Guar]

    "It's... It's not so simple."

Eponine took another swig of shein, then began to speak again. "They want me to kill the Morag Tong operative I was tailing and bring proof back to the Dawnstar Sanctuary. If I don't... I get silenced. They'd never try and reestablish a Morrowind sanctuary, it's just idiotic considering the present situation, but... It's very, very, very likely that they'll want to... um... send some lone assassins here to kill me, even if they don't want to try and reclaim Morrowind for themselves."

Eponine almost appeared to shrink in her chair. "I have a bad feeling about this."

OOC:Mind if I pop in a lone DB assassin for Eponine and the gang to fight and/or to be immediately spotted by guards and/or to fall victim to bad karma?

  15. IC: (Mathyn Llethri. The Lucky Guar)

"Old friends?" the Dunmer asked Eponine, almost knowingly.

IC Eponine [Narsis - The Lucky Guar]

"If you must know... I was a DB assassin. Emphasis on was. I left after... The Oblivion Crisis really knocked us off our feet. So much happened and..."

    Eponine frowned.

"I had to leave before it got too bad. Once, we had honor but now... Savages, the lot of them . The problem is, they don't want me gone. This..." Eponine pointed to the letter. "This is pretty much their way of saying 'come back pretty please.'"

She poured herself a glass of shein from the bottle, then downed it in a single move.

"But I won't. Not in a million years. Not even if Sithis himself came down from the heavens and bestowed the title of Emperor of All The Land in exchange for rejoining the Brotherhood. They can kiss my bottom for all I care."

Eponine folded the letter and put it in her pocket, poured herself another glass of shein (she'd be hugging the loo, for sure), and made a toast.

    "To burning bridges."

  16. Again, you can play games like Skyrim and New Vegas for hundreds of hours, though the main story might take you anywhere from 20+ to 100+, but that all depends. With New Vegas, you can't play after the main story is finished, though, so I always save it for the end. I think my longest playthrough clocked in at 300+ hours.

I'm also not a big fan of the Souls games. If you watch Game Theory's Deadlock, namely the Souls episode, you'll understand. Jirard in that episode is really just parroting my opinion.

  17. Silvan's gonna do a great job, I'm sure.

Well, apart from the fact that he likes Daniel Jackson, but I shouldn't let that cloud my judgement of Silvan....

DANIEL JACKSON SUCKS JONAS QUINN FOREVER!

Nah, but seriously, what's Hewkii gotta face in Po-Koro ATM?

  18. Instead of "nailing down the genders," just put in a use common sense rule and don't let people have genders like "ghost" and "tablecloth."

Apart from that... looks good. Admittedly, I kinda like Knightfall a little more, mostly because it's medieval fantasy-esque, which I like.

    Ah, yes. Ghost Buster.

The character mostly everyone secretly wanted to read, but also apparently the one that nobody actually deserved to.

    Tragic.

Back to the RPG, I find myself in agreement with Ghidorah about nailing down exactly which species are allowed for the game; diversity is good, but having a concrete list is probably better from a purely organisational standpoint. And asking around for a Co-GM might not be such a bad idea as well, especially if you're planning on running Knightfall too.

GHOST IS NOT A GENDER! GHOST IS NOT A GENDER! GHOST IS-

    Ahem. Sorry. Little outburst there.

  19. I feel pretty much the opposite, I like JRPGS because they generally have a full cast of premade characters (and I find that this also still applies to quite a few unnamed "hero" characters, i.e. Persona 3/4 and Fire Emblem Awakening), and I feel like that really helps the story of the game.

Really? I've always hated having a character whose choices I can't influence. With JRPGs, I always feel that I'm being forced down a set path, but with WRPGs, I can influence the story beyond a simple "who do I want in my party" choice.

    *cough*BethSoft titles*cough*

I do think that if you haven't played a WRPG before, then Fallout: New Vegas, Skyrim and Morrowind are your best bets. Skyrim is easy to get into and good for first-timers, Morrowind is complex and shows off the more complicated nature of the genre without being too complex, and New Vegas a great mix of both. Sadly, both Morrowind and New Vegas got the short end of the stick when it came to graphics, so for someone coming from Skyrim to the older BethSoft titles, it's a little jarring to have everything except one person freeze and zoom in on the dolls that pass for people in the Mojave Wasteland, or pause everything and have text-based dialogue on Vvardenfell.

  20.

Lost World 3DS was cool. U not so much because it had wonky physics. =P

Backlog is a problem for me, or I'd be more hyped. =P /still not even halfway through Xenoblade

I don't really want to play XBC. Not abig JRPG fan.

your tastes are trash and you should feel like trash

    /joke

I mean, the genre really isn't for everyone - the games tend to be long, and slower paced than many western games in general. XBC is still an amazing game though. More...western-styled combat, I guess? It's still very JRPG, but it's not turn-based, and it's done very much in real time and stuff. difficult to explain.

    eh.

    ---

On the subject of Fallout 4, I have not extensively played a fallout game myself, and there's no way my potato of a laptop can run it...and I'm not buying a PS4/Xbone to play it. yet i'm going to get a Wii U just for xenoblade x. eh, it's cheaper, and there's not only one game i'm interested in for it anyways. But yeah. Not going to get FO4, only because I have no way to play it, sadly.

IN terms of JRPGs, I've played a couple of Final Fantasy games (I think mostly on the SNES,) two Pokemon games, and a couple random ones here and there. The big problems I have are mostly immersion and customization... With every single JRPG, my characters have been made for me, my dialogue has either been chosen for me or a bad case of "But Thou Must," the combat (even when they try to make it more "real-time" just doesn't appeal.... I just don't like the genre on principal. Give me Fallout: NV or Skyrim, and I'm a happy camper. Give me Final Fantasy VII, and I just fall asleep.

Also, I'm probably not just going to get a PS4 for FO4, mainly cause Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a priority target on my radar. Speaking of which,
