This, in conjunction with the sheer fail of my college's various technologies of this vein, leads me to the conclusion that all educationally-oriented internet-related software sucks and fails by default. -

Incorrect.
The fact that Turakii and TLH (or Smeag and I, for that matter) just happen to both be BZP members doesn't mean that BZP should be used as a dating site - in fact, I'd highly discourage it.
Smeag and I worked together and became friends through BZP - our relationship beyond that was completly outside of the website. I'm sure it's the same for TLH and Turakii. We didn't come on BZ looking for a boyfriend/girlfriend - if it has stooped to that for some of the membership, then I'm ashamed to be a part of it, and for it turning into a "fad" or a term used as such. =\
Very well said. It's a bit of a nice thing if that happens, but I just can't see how anyone would ever consider such their primary intention here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in AIII, "The Group" seem to be the only people doing things like that.
I'm gonna have to call bull on this one. I don't know what planet you're living on, but in Artwork III, the Group - specifically, myself, NR, Dok and Nid on the rare occasion he does so - are essentially the only people providing critiques containing any degree of intelligence or pleasant advice.
