  1. Agreed. I'd feel uncomfortable with suddenly seeing some of the male Toa as female, but I'd get used to it. I'd be more inclined to have a significant proportion of the Protectors (half and half) be female, since they don't really have established identities yet.
  2. Sorry, fishers64, but I don't think you made a convincing enough case to argue why it should be a female element. Can we emphasize the fact that there were only two parts in written canon that portrayed Toa of Plasma, both of which didn't use gendered pronouns? This would help give casual viewers a little more insight into why we think it's a good idea to canonise the Plasma element as female. I understand that you did put the proposal letter, but you did so with little context and expect people to read and understand why we are doing this. Apologies if I come off as overly abrasive - I just want to get this right. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to have a kneejerk "no" reaction because of the previous canonisation debates, and as a result, we wouldn't be able to generate meaningful thought involving their decision to support or oppose the motion. So here's why we believe the canonising Plasma as a female element is worth pursuing: Firstly, as we all know, the gender ratio of the Toa in the BIONICLE universe is skewed heavily towards a male species, and we feel that canonising this would help balance the ratio. The retcon will be unobtrusive. There were only two parts in written canon that portrayed Toa of Plasma, both of which did not use gendered pronouns. If this motion is followed through, the only thing we have to "retcon" is Greg's answers on the LEGO Message Boards. This opens opportunities for canon-conforming fanfictions to have more female Toa. Why would canonising Plasma as a female element be detrimental/pointless?: This does in no way help balance the gender ratio of existing characters in the old generation of BIONICLE, due to its inconsequential nature. This negates the canonicity of previously canon-conforming fanfictions starring Toa of Plasma. We should be focusing on the Gen 2 BIONICLE gender ratio instead - the one that is more current and meaningful to change. (Note that both goals can be achieved, and neither choice is exclusive for one another. I'm putting this point up because a lot of people have mentioned it) Overall, I don't think this is such a consequential issue. Nothing much changes, and your attitude can go one of two ways: 1) Might as well canonise it, since it's a simple and unobtrusive canonisation that shouldn't upset too many people. 2) There's no point in canonising it since it doesn't change anything. Make of this what you will, but remember to vote!
  3. Point taken. Arguably, we could do both. Do you have any ideas as to who to contact for the current story team? For gen1, we had Greg, but for gen2, we don't exactly have a direct connection to the new story team. I suppose creating a petition would get LEGO's attention. Before we do that, we'll probably have to discuss how we go about it - do we propose that they make certain protectors female, or would people not mind which protectors are female as long as x number of them are (so both us and LEGO have some wiggle room to negotiate)? As for the Plasma element message, here's my take: "Hey Greg. A group of fans on BZPower have discovered that the element of Plasma has never been referred to with gendered pronouns in any official media, and thought it would be a good opportunity to have another female element. Previously, you stated: Oct 8 2006, 10:00 AM 4) Which gender do the Toa of Gravity and the Toa of Plasma have? 4) I would tend to think they are both male. Nov 12 2007, 12:10 PM 4. What gender are Toa of Sonics? 4b. Toa of Plasma? 4) Both are male. However, as I have mentioned, in the written media, no gendered pronouns were used, so if Plasma could be canonized as female, we would be extremely grateful! For reference, here are the passages in question: Bionicle Legends (p37): Quote Dark Mirror ( chapter 8): Quote "
  4. The instance of the PoW is something I think we can gloss over. All the Protectors have the exact same description, and only the PoF had any sort of characterization in the animations. Beyond that, there's literally no information on those guys. Until proven otherwise, there's always the possibility that one or more of the Protectors are female (personally, I'm all for the Ice and Jungle ones being female). @SailorQuaoar A very similar thing happened in 2009 when they introduced the bigendered Agori and Glatorian tribes, where the only female set character (out of 24 released set characters(!) and I'm not even counting the Zesk or Vorox since those were species rather than characters) was Kiina. That's a ratio of 1:23, and it was disheartening to see how it became even more skewed, as a direct result of the unlocking of the gender lock. This precedence makes me think Lego is just going to default to all male protectors, but I hope they prove me wrong. @The~1st~Shadow For some reason, I keep thinking the PoE is female. Aside from that, I'm inclined to think that PoW and PoJ are also female, but seriously, kudos to the set designers for making the Protector masks look fairly gender-neutral - I can imagine them being both female and male by just the mask, but it's in the build of the figure that distinguishes them. @Voxumo In all likelihood, I have to agree with you - it's just lazy maintenance of their website. I'm still a bit disappointed at the lack of effort put into making the website - it's all still images on a blakc background with a few descriptions and videos. Very little animation or interactivity, and it is put to shame by even the Hero Factory's launch website, back when there was tonnes of content and little things to discover on the website. I do understand that this may be due to focus testing showing that kids don't look on websites anymore and that my opinion on what should be on the site may not be in Lego's best interests. But I can dream, right? A Toa of Plasma is also in Dark Mirror (in an alternate universe, but still; it's in chapter 8): Apparently no pronouns. Well there we go, there's our opening. Can someone on the LMB petition Greg to make Plasma female then?At this point, I'm afraid to ask in fear that he gender locks the element to male, but at the same time, I do want to push for a female Plasma element. Edit: And if we do ask him, we can't just ask him what gender it is - we would need to say why we would want it to be changed, and propose that he canonise it as female.
  5. trans neon green The artist who did the animations just decided they should be different from the actual set. That, or the animations were just based on a preliminary version of the set that DID have blue eyes. As I understand it that was the reason for so many of the Toa Metru having the wrong eye colors (and no chest plates) in the 2004 BIONICLE comics. This is hardly the first time there's been this sort of discrepancy between sets and media. If that were the case they would have changed the eye glow coming from the Mask of Creation in every other promotional image used and being used. I truthfully think that the eye color change for the mask is a story thing. The mask itself has the same color wrapping around it as pure energy. The Mask of Ultimate Power was also shown to change eye color. I think it's purely for dramatic affect and to show a sense of power and energy within the three masks, if that makes any sense. In other words, Ekimu's natural eye color was yellow before he obtained the Mask of Creation through whatever mysterious means it had been obtained. Same with Makuta. I was really hoping for a trans-light blue eye stalk to help balance out the eye colour ratio, considering only 2 out of the 6 Toa had trans-light blue in the first wave. Besides, I feel that having a trans-greenish yellow stalk for Ekimu clashes with his colour scheme - blue eyes would flow so well with the rest of his trans-light blue bone pieces.
  6. The OP was suggesting changing the gender of one Matoran Element: Plantlife. However, Plantlife has been established in an official story source as male, rendering this a moot point. Like many others, I was offering up another option: Gravity, which HAS NOT appeared in an official canon source, to my knowledge (Still waiting for someone to pull out Time Trap and give us a screenshot of Lariska's conversation with TSO...). As such, it would make more sense to change that than to go back and fully retcon something that HAS appeared in story. You don't want Gravity changed? Fine. But a lot of us think it could easily be done otherwise. Plasma and Gravity are the only elements I can think of that would make the most sense to be made female due to their lack of appearances in official media. I reiterate: NOGLB was written to portray the events that led to Varian being locked away in TSO's chambers. All that was was a minor reference to a character that never actually had any impact on a story not written by the official author of the series. BS01 states that both Plasma and Gravity Matoran are male. Where did they appear in the canon, and were they referred to by gender pronouns? (BS01 has a shoddy citation system that prevents me from finding that out)
  7. 1: Yet those childish and silly animations didn't have fart jokes and Toa magnets in them, something the old Bio animations did. 2: Bionicle's old story took 10 years to build up. 3: Introducing every single old Bionicle game ever. Yeah no seriously I don't see the difference. Come to think of it, the only LEGO games that weren't so repetitive were Breakout, Dino Attack (debatable), and Robot Chronicles. 1: Fart jokes and Toa magnets? I don't remember this. (And what's wrong with a Toa magnet - whatever you mean by that?) 2: Depends what you mean by "build up" - it took about 9 years to finish. Each year had a build up and climax for their particular arc, e.g. the quest for the masks and confrontation with Makuta at the end of 2001, or the return to Metru Nui and defeat of the Visorak horde in 2005. 3: MNOG 1 and 2 were fairly detailed and were excellent world builders, although they were admittedly very tedious. VNOG had a moderately in-depth turn based RPG system that enabled a load of customisation, with plenty of different enemies to fight and tactics to use. The console games released for BIONICLE were sub-par to mediocre at best, but could be fun sometimes (my references are the Mask of Light game and the BIONICLE: Heroes game, the latter of which was pretty fun in small bursts) My main issue with the new generation is the way they market the story. What hooked me into BIONICLE was how "cool" (for lack of a better term) and mysterious it was presented. Remember all those awesome advertisements showcasing a dark and mysterious evil that the Toa had to overcome? Or the comics, which propelled the story forward into the rich alien world they built for themselves? This generation, they focus on making the animations fun and silly, especially with the corny-as-heck voices. Additionally, the way they present the conflict in the story is fairly downplayed, and the threat to the island doesn't seem so dire when the Toa could easily defeat the LoSS after one failed attempt and one conversation. There is no tension. There is no danger. Regardless, I'm thoroughly enjoying the new sets, which are wonderfully designed, and the story is not without its merits - particularly Pohatu's new pragmatic and no-nonsense persona. It's really growing on me, and I can't help but watch episodes 8 and 9 over and over again just to see Pohatu interact with the rest.
  8. I vote Pohatu, since he seems like the most level headed and pragmatic.
  9. I always assumed that the grating/mesh on the Okotoa were there for airflow, much like a computer fan or fans on a complex machine. I can imagine the machine parts inside whirring whenever I look at those silver little rectangles. The speakers idea seems a bit silly considering they have mouths and turn their heads (and not their bodies) when they speak (to project their voice towards their team).
  10. This quote has become one of my favorites since Gen 1 Bionicle ended. It just shows how great Light Teridax was in the story. Zaktan's threat to Irnakk would be a close second though. Stole my quote I agree. I got so pumped up when I first read this sentence, because you can't get much better than a white and gold Terry smashing in shadow Takanuva left and right
  11. My personal theory (purely speculation, of course) is that those two planets could be future locations for the Toa to explore. It could go one of two ways: each year, the Toa move to a different planet, OR every three-year arc (assuming Bionicle is successful enough to warrant more than 3 years), the Toa team moves onto a different planet. Perhaps after the first arc, we get a new Toa team to explore the new planet. Who knows?
  12. Do you want me to help you in any way? Sorry, wrong thread! XD Do you know how to delete a post?
  13. I'm getting together with a friend to plan out a massive (probably overly ambitious) continuation of the Gen1 story in serialised chapters. Since there are a tonne of characters and unfinished plot threads, it's going to be a very, very difficult project to undertake, also considering how they introduced the Gold Fusion, Velika's murderous rampage, The Shadowed One's acquisition of the Makuta viruses and subsequent amassing an army, Kabrua's Hunger Games ripoff, the Baterra, the Red Star's inhabitants, the reborn League of Six Kingdoms marching for war, Marendar, Gaardus, the EP entity, the Antidermis Brutaka, Toa Varian going to be unstasis-ified soon, Voporak with the Mask of Time, etc. We also want to look into some of our own original stories (hinted within the established canon, or otherwise stories we want to do that aren't a part of any current story threads), for example: Krakua defending an island fortress in the future, a story about Kanohi and identity, a story about the element lords (present, not past), Federation of Fear sequel, a story focusing on the Chronicler's Company, a story focusing on the Mahri-toran + Mazeka and Hydraxon (all basic elements represented there), a story focusing on Gavla as a character, and possibly more. It's a lot of loose ends to tie up and a lot of story opportunities we want to pursue. It will likely be told as a collection of concurrently running serials. Considering the fact that we also have to find a good climax and logical narrative progression, alongside making sure most characters aren't forgotten, whether this plan will actually follow through to the end is a very real uncertainty. But do or do not, there is no try, so we're going to see how far we can take it.
  14. I'm just curious, how many of you guys read the Reysa story? I felt that was probably the strongest one out of the stories (thematically and in terms of writing), yet so few people voted for it. :/ I have a feeling a lot of people neglected it since Reysa isn't exactly a front-and-centre character, and so got shafted. Whoever is reading this post right now, I urge you to go read the story if you haven't. It's a very well written and meaningful story that I absolutely wished was in the top few. Congrats to all the winners, though! There were some really awesome stories out there which are a fitting send off to the old generation of canon. Hopefully in the future, we can also have some input into the Gen2 storyline in a similar manner. I can't wait to see what's in store for us.
  15. This is all I came here for. If they can pull of a satisfyingly functional droideka build, I would buy that the moment it comes out. This system is actually pretty good for droids in general, and if they can get some other (non humanoid) builds in, it would really help push the system to evolve and become more creative with their designs.
  16. I think it's best left to our imaginations. Considering it wasn't that canon to begin with, and it doesn't make a huge impact on the story, I would prefer it remain a funny little quirk of the BIONICLE universe that we as fans can remember and speculate about to the end of eternity. Having different interpretations of it certainly gives wiggle room for fanfics as well, if they choose to incorporate it. (Maybe poke some self-aware fun at it if they want)
  17. On Bricklink, there are some Great Mask lots from the 2002 mask packs listed as Copper, and some listed as Metallic Gold. Were those masks ever released in both colours, or is this a goof by the people running Bricklink?
  18. I'm surprised no-one mentioned more technic connections. I find one of the main reasons CCBS is so difficult to work with is the unconventional minifig-sized connection pins on the CCBS shells. If they incorporated shells/armour pieces with technic connection holes/studs, that would greatly increase its compatibility with the technic element and provide far more options for customisation than it currently has.
  19. I'd also like to know. The mods have been radio silent ever since the end of the competition. Perhaps they're doing an internal vote (quality-control based)?
  20. Why is there such an overwhelming number of people who don't want either of these stories to be canonised? I found Entry #1 fantastically written, and the way Infrared cleverly weaves all the plotlines and themes together makes such a compelling story that I can't help but feel it's one of the better entries overall in the whole contest. His descriptions of Karzahni (the place) and his characterisation of Reysa and Karzahni (the being) are both engaging and befitting of the the characters. Please give this one a chance, guys!
  21. This is a brilliant entry. I love how you cleverly tied in all the aspects of your story into a meaningful message, and I absolutely adore your descriptions of Karzahni (both the being and the place). Even if it doesn't win, I think it would have made a fantastic addition to the canon. I cannot recommend reading this story enough.
  22. This was so well written, and the banter was too real XD I loved it!
  23. Regardless, the writing was excellent and very enjoyable to read. I look forward to future stories, even if this one isn't made canon
  24. They do complement each other very, very well. Arrgh I wish they could just merge the best parts of both, but overall, I think the second one was better for its characterisation of Nuju and the world (which felt more involved and alive than the first one). @ the authors: Don't worry, guys! I absolutely loved reading both works and they were both very well written. I had such a hard time deciding XD Whatever happens, know that you both came out of this competition having satisfied at least one more bonkle fan!
