IC [standast]Meanwhile, a Standast aerospace company known as Far Star had revealed to the public their latest plane design, using innovations shared to the public regarding composite materials. It was the first Stan airliner to have the majority of it's hull be made from a carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite, a strong and lightweight material comparable to other aeronautic materials. This also made it very fuel efficient, a boon for airlines. The Standast airlines, however, were... somewhat small, seeing as it was a small nation and thus the longest flight was three hours or so. However, Far Star knew that intercontinental would soon spike, with more interest in the foreign nations coming. Civilian traffic would be intense, so they were beginning to build a fleet of these planes, to be ready in a few years. They called it Starrunner.A memo was sent to all friendly nations to come to Standast and tour the prototype they had, as well as a request for international agreements and discussions over airport size and control. It'd do no good if airports weren't big enough or shaped right, after all.OOCGentlemen, I give you, a Boeing 787, over two decades early.

IC: The Fillion helicopter followed the others to the landing pad and settled down with barely a bump. The rotors stopped and the first contact team stepped out. A technician with a large backpack was looking around in interest at the buildings surrounding the helipad. The leader of the group, a tall man with blond hair and grey eyes, stepped forward saying,"Greetings! I am Conaro Dounter from the country of Fillion."At his name, he had pointed at himself and then back in the direction they had come from upon saying the name of his nation. While he waited for a response from the group before him, he reached into his own backpack and withdrew a block of acid treated bismuth that had formed in the shape of a pyramid. The light struck it and colored the area around it in hues of yellow, blue and red. He held it out along with a dictionary of Fol, that being the main language of FillionElsewhere the other helicopters began to fly around the edges of The Slacian Union and Saaristo, searching for a city or something in case this place was inhabited. Fillion did not want to make enemies of people they had not even met yet.Even further elsewhere, the final helicopter had reached land and, after skirting the edges for a bit flew inland. After finding nobody there and grabbing some soil samples, they turned homeward to bring back their report. That the large landmass to the east was unoccupied and open to possible expansion.

IC [standast]Despite their isolation for over ten thousand years, the peoples of the world, once you knew enough about them, had similar languages on a basic level. The dictionary was taken, studied, and the party guided to a temporary residence while the linguists attempted to work out what the foreigners meant.Meanwhile, a rival aerospace company, Freespace, was preparing their counter to their rival's Starrunner. They too had been working with composites, and a memo was sent to the various nations of the world to see their latest creation; a supersonic oceanic cruiser. Capable of cruising at mach 3, it would be the fastest passenger plane in Standast, possibly the world. The composite materials would allow it to remain lightweight, cutting down the massive fuel consumption of supersonic travel while improvements in airframe design and aerodynamics would allow it to cut through the air easier. It would still be a fuel hog, but it was far more efficient than other supersonic planes.

OOC: Astarians are like Germans in this regard; a practical people. They'd want more than rumors spouted by someone with an odd accent and imperfect command of the language who they'd never met before, all of whom seem to be the exact type of wild vagrants all peoples have, who can always be found spouting rumors.

OOC: 'cause, yanno, if I wanted to blend in and impersonate Astarians, I'd use someone who had a foreign accent and wasn't fluent. We've been connected for about five in game years by now, there are (contrary to what you seem to think) people who are fluent. it takes less time than that for your average dull student to pick up a new language. When I have specialists working on your case and they're the best and brightest, five years to impersonate the local accent and delivery is a cinch.IC: Several Aquileonese airlines sent over representatives to inspect the Starrunner, interested in buying this cutting-edge technology. Others were sent to see Freespace's new demonstration. :w: Edited by Lloyd: the White Wolf

IC [standast]PIA representatives, military experts, and engineers arrived at Aquileon, the embassy relaying that they were here to begin a joint project; a high altitude spy zeppelin, capable of dodging radar, but carrying enough camera equipment to take finely detailed pictures for remote surveillance of targets. It'd be somewhat costly on both sides, but the end result would be a much cheaper solution than satellite surveillance.

IC: The research crews were escorted to one of Aquileon's many classified bases and introduced to the Aquileonese team who'd be working with them. As a whole, they were briefed on security measures and then began to work.OOC: Joint project with Standast: Spy Zeppelins, 4/6 IP due Mar. 25.IC: Two of the projects that had been underway for a while now were finally complete, one of them ahead of schedule. Project Skylight, Aquileon's investigations into stealth technology, had been refined and perfected to the best of the abilities of the researchers involved. it had been finished far ahead of time--projections didn't call for it to be complete for several years yet. The other project, Angler-Fish, was a investigation into high-speed, high-altitude aircraft with an eye to an interceptor role. Now, the results of the two were combined and the first Kestrel stealth interceptor was put on the production line. With an operational ceiling of 85,000 ft., a rate of climb of 11,800 ft/min, a range of 2,900 nautical miles, the radar signature of a small pet, and a top speed of Mach 3.5, the SF-85 Kestrel was the crowning jewel of Aquileonese military aviation.~+~A few months after the discovery of Fillion, a diplomatic team (with a Stan translator versed in Fillion language) went to the new country, proposing a trade: Fillion laser technology for Aquileon composite armor. The deal, after some haggling and the addendum that all future developments in those areas would also be shared, was accepted and signed by both parties. The first samples of both kinds were exchanged.OOC: This deal was considered and approved in private. Silvan gave his permission for it.Beginning construction on one SF-85 Kestrel.IC: At another one of Aquileon's many classified bases, the scientists who had been vanished by the government were also receiving a security briefing."From now until the completion of the project, this base is on complete lockdown." General Kuznetzov said. "You will not be allowed to leave the base, and communication will come once every five years. I'm sure all of you were informed of this prior to signing up, but some of you might not have read the whole paper before going to the bottom line. You are the best and brightest that Aquileon has to offer, and the work that you will do here is invaluable to our country. However, there are concerns that other nations who try to spy on Aquileonese research could get wind of your work, which would be disastrous. We have shredded and incinerated almost all files pertaining to the existence of this project, and those that are still intact are buried under miles of bureaucracy." He allowed a moment for a chuckle to ripple throughout the hangar bay, temporarily repurposed into a briefing hall. "The base has been modified to ensure that nothing gets in or out that is not authorized. The majority of your time will be spent in the bunker complex we have constructed specifically for your work. Don't worry--it is large enough to house your laboratories, your families, and all the supplies you will require. You will have free access to the surface base, but while on the surface you will be required to follow the reconnaissance satellite schedule: the ASA has drawn up a schedule for the military regarding the times that foreign satellites can see this base. As we are on an island in the middle of Aquileon, and a fairly mountainous one at that, those timeframes are rather slim, but they are still there. Certain supplies that we cannot produce on-base will be airdropped every two months. Please allow the servicemen to process the supplies before they give you what you need. There are certain procedures that need to be followed."Now, I'm certain that you will need higher morale requirements than our men in the service, so we have arranged for those of you with creative talents such as music, art, or cinema to be able to create such things in your off-time. As we expect you will be here for quite some time, we hope for you to become a community in your time here. All efforts to that end will be greatly appreciated. Any questions?" No questions. "Very well. Dismissed."There was a large shuffling of chairs as the scientists stood and were led to the entrance to the bunker, concealed within the very same hangar. As the last one entered the underground town that would be their home for many years to come, it shut with a sort of grim finality.Project Luminous had been initiated.OOC: Project Luminous underway. 50 IP, Completion date March 22nd 2013. :w:

OOC: Still, the fact that they're doing nothing but rumor spouting isn't really enough to start a riot. SO STOP BLOODY PRESUMING ABOUT MY PEOPLE. They are humans, yes, but they've gone down an entirely different cultural path from the world we know, and have been isolated from any other nation for tens of thousands of years. It's a huge break from reality that their psychology is ANYTHING like the humans you know-in all likelihood, their psychology would be entirely alien. So let me make it clear-you know nothing about them. You will not presume a single thing. ANY control of an Astarian will have to go through me, or it simply won't apply. Got it?

OOC: I'm doing my level best to be very polite, Rover. But when Xomeron makes such an absurd claim that his people's psychology is so alien that I cannot understand it, I must refute that. If they feel anger, love, despair, any sort of emotion, I can use that. If they have basic social cohesion, I can use that. If they have the mob mentality that has been demonstrated to apply to humans the world over, I can use that. Xomeron, don't claim that your people's psychology is alien unless they are actually aliens. I am not arrogant, I do not have an innate sense of self-superiority. I am merely angry.Let me write some fluff to cool off while you, Xomeron, reply to the post I edited. Like you asked me to (and after I do what he wants, he calls me arrogant. Sheesh.)IC:"I am a fair man, demon. I am a fair man, unless I am pushed. You have just pushed me. No, you don't understand what you're in for. You know who I am. The Wandering Man. The Mage of Time. The Oncoming Storm. You've heard the stories, and let me tell you. Every single one is true. I've killed more than you could ever count. I've fought monsters at the beginning of the Universe and I may yet live to see it end. I brought about the destruction of my own race, my siblings, my friends, all in the name of peace. You have just hurt someone I like, that is not a safe place to stand. Get out of my way."--Monologue taken from 'Please,' a south Aquileonese tale originating from the early 2nd century. The story, about an ordinary boy who braved danger and distance to recruit the 'Travelling Man' and his blue box to save his village from a terrible demon, contains several conversations between the youthful boy and the world-weary Travelling Man. Strangely grim, considering the prevalently uplifting legends of pre-polis literature, it still ends happily, with the demon defeated, the village saved, and the boy admired and thanked by his peers. The Travelling Man, in a typical literary device, leaves the village the next day after refusing any reward. Whether the tale is at all historically correct is unknown. :w:

IC:The Astarians immediately offered to allow the Stans to analyze the video footage taken-like most places, the Stan embassy was equipped with well-concealed, closed-circuit, full color television cameras. As were the streets leading towards the safehouse(for the Stan embassy was in the capital city's bureaucratic district, all of which was closely monitored) The cameras weren't common knowledge-most citizens didn't know they were being watched. But the moment the footage had been suitably analyzed, the man tracked from the embassy to his origin, a full battalion of the Astarian army was dispatched. No announcements were made, no evacuations launched. Any foreigner could be told from Astarians with a DNA test. The entire city block was surrounded, sealed off by machine-gun manned checkpoints, while sharpshooter teams watched the rooftops(most of the civic buildings had ornately decorated rooftops, and the chances of jumping from one to the other were slim, but the Astarians weren't taking any risks) Every man, woman, and child was isolated, cut off from telephone access, their pagers and similar devices taken away. Everyone would be checked, no exceptions. The city's Lieutenant Mayor put up a mighty fuss, but he still wasn't allowed to skip the process. First, multiple types of makeup remover were checked on skin and hair. Second, close inspection was given to the eyes, where no contact lens could stand up. Third, everyone's blood was taken and matched to their National Identification Card(these were granted to all citizens every ten years, and forgeries were near-impossible thanks to the production methods being a tightly kept secret, using certain materials and processes the Astarians believed they alone had developed)OOC: So, do I round up any foreign agents? Because I can't really think of a way you'd get out of here.

IC: The Anitalian ship's hail was received by a single helicopter flying over their heads and slowing down until it was about fifty yards of the portside bow. It then turned and headed over towards one of the only nearby ports. A radio message crackled over the radio telling the ship to follow.A door on the helicopter slid open and a man leaned out pointing in the direction the helicopter was heading and yelling. Hopefully, the ship would get the message.

Don't get cocky. Also, I feel the need to point out that my guy would never be so stupid as to get near the embassy on a trip like that one--who was it who was complaining about me making assumptions about your guys' intelligence, again?IC: Of course, they did find their man. He was an Astarian, a private citizen (the Aquleonese chose him for his outstanding patriotism). If the authorities checked his home, they'd find ingredients to making a bomb as well as the gun that had killed the Ambassador (with no one's fingerprints on it but hiss, naturally). A check of the security tapes would show him entering his home after the shooting had taken place.Meanwhile, the janitor slipped into the sewers below, doffed his disguise and burned it, dropping the ashes into the muck where they'd never be found. He quickly escaped the quarantine area and made his way to the beach, where it wass a cinch to fake a boating accident, dive, swim further out to sea where there were no witnesses, and get picked up by a civilian-registered seaplane. He stopped over in the Black Crescent Empire, where security was much more lax despite the iron-fisted regime (in fact, the security would likely hamper any attempts to trail him), hopped through a few more countries, and then returned to Aquileon.OOC: Hey, sometimes it's okay to go all Sam Fisher in the spy game. IC: The belief in the Hallowed Obodenus was a highly focused one. In Artungaad the god-like figure of the Obodenus was seen in much the same light as a genius locii, a supernatural entity who based itself solely in their archipelago. They believed that other islands had their own gods who had helped them through whatever hardships they had suffered. It was why they had never tried converting the other nations through missionaries. But outsiders were not quite as aware of this.It had started with the Varangians. They were the first to encounter the Waalrusaan and the first to be exposed to the religion. Their traders had brought stories about the Hallowed Obodenus back, stories they shared with others. And now it had spread even further, to Standast, to Kiserre, to Aquileon, even to the Anitalian Empire who hadn't even known what a walrus was until the storm barriers cleared. Little conclaves dedicated to the Hallowed Obodenus were popping up all over the island continents...OOC: Quick question those islands in Q18 and O16, have they been claimed?

IC:The Astarian man soon confessed that he had been compelled to do what he'd done by an Aquilonian agent. This confession was given in a full court, in front of a great many witnesses and the media. Some in the Astarian govenment had reservations, since they only operated on his word and had no way to know whether he was lying to save his own skin or not, but the people needed a scapegoat. The order was given, however. All men, women, and children of Aquilonian ancestry(all of whom had their DNA on file and were rigorously tracked by the government) were compelled to leave within three days. Any who stayed behind would be considered in league with the terrorists, and treated accordingly.

IC: The religion dedicated to the Hallowed Odobenus was quickly officially sanctioned by the royal government, and added to the list of religions recognized by the Varangian government. 'cause it's full of Aquileonese.IC: The appearance of this new cult was noted and surveilled by the NKVD, but strictly to monitor for foreign influence. They didn't care who the cultists worshiped, they were more concerned with the fact that it could possibly lead them to take action against Aquileon.~+~The President stood behind the podium in the press briefing room, watching serenely as the pressmen shouted questions at him like ravenous dogs snapping at a piece of meat. He waited for a few more moment, then held up his hand, the signal for silence. The press went silent almost instantly. Cameras began rolling, sending the image of the President all across Aquileon."As I am sure most of you are aware, Astaria has recently accused this nation of assassinating the Stan Ambassador to Astaria. The perpetrator, an Astarian who has never had contact with an agent of this government, was given a show trial yesterday, where he fully and publicly confessed to be an agent of Aquileon. The Astarian government responded by giving all Aquileonese three days to depart, or else they would treat them as accomplices to the assassination."Let me categorically state that the claim made by the assassin was false. We had no involvement in the assassination of the Stan Ambassador. We are a civilized people--we would not assassinate our own ally's ambassador to a foreign country. My Attorney General has told me that the assassin was, in all likelihood, coerced into confessing his involvement with a foreign power: As opposed to the Astarians' accusation that we were responsible, this answer is not only more simple but also has motive behind it. The assassination is highly embarrassing for the Astarian government, and thus blaming Aquileon for it would shift the focus away from them and onto us. The second is that it plays off of the well-recorded xenophobia that rules the streets of Astaria. The citizenry are likely to believe it, simply because the story of the 'evil foreigner' is much more easy for them to accept than the possibility that one of their own was responsible."The incident is also being used the the Astarians as an excuse to evict all Aquileonese from their territory. Quite simply, it takes more than three days for most people to move all of their worldly possessions from one place to another, let alone across the world. My people estimate that over one third of Aquileonse citizens will still be in Astaria when the three-day time limit expires. I have directed all available government aircraft to help them leave before the time limit is up. In addition, the expulsion of our citizens means that we will be unable to operate our embassy. We are currently inquiring as to whether the embassy will stay open or not."Our prayers go out to the family of the Stan Ambassador and the Aquileonese who are trapped in Astaria. Good night, and God bless Aquileon." :w:

OOCGuys, I'll be on and off for the following days, unless life stops being a derp. So don't expect much out of me. In the mean time...IC [standast]The Stans, while pleased the Astarians seemed to be open with them, were not reacting well to this incident. Back in the homeland the public was in an uproar, the newly formed police forces trying their best to keep things in check. The Stan people had dealt with incidents like this for eons; it ended in the guilty being killed, much property damage, and a lot of drinking afterwards. In this situation that obviously wouldn't work, but the people wanted something to be done. The Senate was being held for a hearing regarding the civilian problems while the Congress was being held for an increased security at the embassies. There was one thing for sure though; the Stans had always regarded foreigners with optimism, and that optimism had been broken. The revealing of the video cameras, while helpful, was hardy reassuring; it may have evidence, but it was clear to the Stans that the Astarians didn't put them there to stop crime; they had put them there to spy on the Stans visiting. The Astarians in general seemed very xenophobic; the Stans didn't know of the concept until but a few years ago, but now they knew it would not end well. Thus, late that night, the First President signed off on a bill passed by the Congress; the reactivation of Project Fallout.OOC5 IP devoted for three days to Project Fallout.

IC [standast]While the public panicked, the government politck'd, and in general things going to ****, the businesses of Standast were busy expanding their reach. They had lived through many bloody feuds, they could live through a bit of public unrest. Specifically, they saw an opportunity arising; the Astarians had been fairly frigid towards their business expansion attempts in the past. Now, however, the government would be looking to clear it's name in the political scene of the world. So six different Stan megacorps approached the Astarian government, seeking business permits to build bases of operation and expand into their nation.OOCThose companies include two metal working companies, three manufacturing companies, and one Walmart type megacorp.IC [standast]The Stan religion was a diverse one, with many, many, gods but a ruling council of fourteen in their pantheon. The way the Stans saw it the gods appeared differently to everyone, some even seeing all the gods as one god. The missionaries were welcomed but kept mostly at bay, silent enforcement of religious views in place. While not quite xenophobia the Stan government had no particular wish to have a religious war on their hands; the public still was use to feuds for solving differences, and it wouldn't be long until a new one sprung up if two Stans disagreed with religion. All the while the PIA watched them closely, making sure that they would know the moment something was wrong.

OOC: Yes, he was. He confessed, not under coercion, but because he wanted a scapegoat and wanted to save his own skin. The government was all too happy to oblige.IC:The Astarians responded by offering to coordinate the removal efforts with the Aquilonian people. The public reason was to speed and smooth the removal process. The private reason was simpler and betrayed the innate practicality of the Astarian people; the fewer Aquilonian citizens the Astarians would have to deal with, the better. Everyone at the top knew that three days wasn't enough time, and in all honesty, they didn't care if the Aquilonians felt a little rushed. To the Stans' offer, and no doubt as a result of Lady Calasi's advice, the two metalworking companies eventually licensed government contracts, working to provide for any company outside the military(foreign nations were not trusted at the moment) The Department Megacorp had its request denied; Astaria's retail stores were all small-time, local affairs, and a large company like that would hurt business. One of the manufacturing companies was taken on, licensing the production of several children's toys from the Stans. Every Stan national entering the country had his picture taken, his blood sampled, his DNA added to a large database, and all his movements watched. In response, the largest Astarian soft drink company began testing the waters for export. This is a signature that describes me as a person. Lazy, dry, and overall just a procra...

OOC: Sad to see you go, ToD. Silvan has expressed interested in using his laser cannons on your bear cavalry, and you would have been interested to interact with. Well, have fun on your other endeavors. Vote for THooL! Wrong topic.Xom, I need to know if you're shutting down my embassy. Slightly important.IC: The Astarian beverage was examined by the Federal Health Office. When the narcotic used in its makeup was found, it was promptly banned until such a time as said narcotic was removed.Meanwhile, a new project, referred to as Project Jormagund, was initiated.OOC: Beginning work on Project Jormagund. :w:

IC: The narcotic beverage was examined by the Royal Academy of Science, and while it was rejected as a commercially-available beverage, the Royal Academy did put in an inquiry regarding a trade arrangement for the plant used to produce the narcotic substance.OOC: While you were making Coca-Cola jokes, I was looking into strong analgesics and anesthetics.

OOC: Yes. The Astarians are going to maintain diplomatic contact with Aquilonia, they just won't have Aquilonians anywhere on their soil.IC:The company soon responded; along with a decocanized version of the same beverage which had been available for quite some time and would be exported in place of "the real thing" if necessary, the company produced from the plant a variety of pharmaceuticals, plenty of which had their own uses.IC: Colony established on N-12.

IC: The Varangians persisted in requesting a trade arrangement for the plant itself - considering that they were willing to export goats, it didn't seem like an unreasonable request.

The one that shocked most people, however, was "AQUILEON EMBASSY SHUT DOWN."Shutting down an embassy was a very serious action, undertaken in only the most extreme circumstances. As the Embassy was the conduit through which almost all formal international discussions happened, shutting one down was a serious message. Aquileon did not let this one go unanswered, and responded by shutting down the Astarian Embassy to Aquileon.:w:

IC:The Astarians at the embassy left the trans-oceanic data cables from Astaria to Aquilonia intact, and left several gifts behind, including a case of Cola for the Aquilonians, and a bottle of fine wine, labeled in both Astarian and Aquilonian "To be opened when we once again stand together. May we someday be friends again."Meanwhile, the back-and-forth flights between Aquilonia and Astaria had shown that the Stans were right; international regulations on airports were necessary. A request was sent to the Stans, hoping that an international consensus could be reached.

IC(Treaty): The Varangians were in favor of signing the treaty simply as a matter of course - biological warfare hadn't really occurred to them, so why would they start using it now.---The Varangian representative from the Royal Academy, speaking slowly and clearly, pointed out that greenhouses are a thing that exist.OOC: Also, it's the coca plant.
