IC [Aquileon]-Before recess-"One full year, with the subjects having constant treatment of the drug. They represent a large variety, from the elderly to the young to the ill to the strong." The woman cleared her throat. "As for the enzymes, yes, some of the parts of the drug interact with the telomerase-type enzymes."-During recess-The businessman of the team stepped forward to talk with the government officials. "An interesting offer; would ten percent work?"

IC: The man nodded. "Ten percent is acceptable. You may publicize our agreement whenever you see fit. I have already drawn up the legal documents," He opened the attache case, pulled out a small stack of papers, and slid one copy to each of the scientists on the team. IC [Aquileon]The team looked at their papers silently, watching as their business guru looked through them for anything suspicious in them.OOCA few questions; is that written in Stan(ish?) or Aquileon(ese?)? Also, what fine print did your operative slip in there? As Stan businesses are the poster child for grey and grey corporations; they try to screw you over whenever possible, so a Stan businessperson is going be reading the fine print.

The Slacian Union/Doing StuffIC:

The Slacian scientists and politicians discussed the likelihood of this miracle drug being all it was cut out to be. On the one hand, if it really was perfection, then it would make population growth, expansion, military recruits, and dozens of other things skyrocket. Eventually overpopulation would set in, and the world would likely flame into conflict. Death would likely ensue, the drug would be outlawed, and the world would return to normal. That, or the moon would be colonized. Maybe both. And then there was the fact that, more likely than not, this did have unknown side effects. How could these scientists know the outcome of usage ten years from now? Would the drug be so addictive that it couldn't be created in sufficient supply? If started, could someone stop taking the drug without dying or suffering severe bodily breakdowns? Needless to say, questions were going to be asked as soon as the recess was through.

IC: "Your imprecise language regarding these enzymes concerns me. See, the issue with telomerase enzymes in the human body is that they don't naturally exist there. In point of fact, the main instance in which they do exist is in cancerous cells - they repair the telomeres capping DNA strands, allowing the cells to replicate indefinitely. Combined with the defects in cancerous cells that remove the checks on when they can replicate, this leads to the main problems experienced by cancer patients."The Varangian scientist paused to take a breath, and shuffled a few papers."The idea here, I assume, is that what this drug does is allow cells to replicate without end, while still restricting them to replication only when it is appropriate to do so. The principal and observed effect, then, is the preservation and restoration of youth, but what of long-term side effects? With telomerase already present, it would seem to me that it would take fewer mutations to induce a malignant tumor in those that have been treated with this drug, and, therefore, that there would be a significantly higher probability of cancer. What do you say to that?"The scientist did a poor job of hiding her surprise that this technology existed at all - putting a new enzyme into production would require genetic modification of all, or at least a majority, of somatic cells, and the means for such genetic modification had to be at least forty years in the future, by most estimates. She couldn't even begin to fathom how the modifcation would be carried out by the drug.OOC: My best guess for the actual modifcation of genetic material that would be required here is viruses. It would be a fairly simple thing, as far as biotechnology goes, to have a virus inject the genes required for this into the nucleus of a cell. Something similar is done with bacteria - except, of course, that, as bacteria don't have nuclei, the virus only has to inject the material into the cytoplasm.A retrovirus (similar to HIV, but targeting a broader range of cells) could be one delivery method. The virus itself would have to be heavily modified, which, in our world, is definitely 21st century technology.

IC: The Varangians were very pleased with the trio of helicopters, and immediately set about shaking them down and getting pilots trained for operating the vehicles. Once that was done, the helicopters would be very good for anti-pirate operations, operations in the more mountainous regions of Varangia, pretty much anything that could possibly be improved by the presence of helicopters.

IC(Kiserre/General): Eager to test the Kiserran military strength without getting involved in a costly war, the Minister of the Legion suggested an idea to the council: Kiserre would host a joint training excercise in the national park where the Legion's airbourne unit had recently completed practice maneuvers. Kiserre would send out invitations to various nations who, if they accepted, would send a mixed role unit to cooperate as part of a team with and against orces of other nations. Kiserre had been using a special type a training projectile that left a water-soluble stain on the target. If other nations did not have an equivalent, they would be required to manufacture their own if they wished to attend. Heavier weapons would be simulated in other ways (OOC: don't feel like figuring this one out, but I'm sure it's possible). In addition, all weapons to be used must be modiied tomake it impossible to fire lethal ammunition. It was understandable that regardless of the non-lethal nature of the excercise, accidents happen, and all parties must understand that. The request was approved, and invitations were sent to the following countries: - The Black Crescent Empire- Varangia- Aquilonea- Astaria- The Seasgate Empire- The Slacian Union- Standast- Anitalia- (whatever Veeci's was called because I forget)Waalrusan (however that is spelled) was not invited due to lack of contact with Kiserre.Anitalia was almost not invited due to the poor opinions posessed by some of the Ministers.

IC:The Aquilonian agents couldn't have possibly passed for Astarians. Lacking an Asterisk in the eye, still having an imperfect command of the language they had only known about for a year or so, and their skin and hair colors being wrong. But they didn't need to; Astarians had no traditions of racism. Foreigners in general were welcomed, and the Aquilonians could find several potential friends, and quite possibly a few romantic prospects among the Astarians; to them, Aquilonians were an interesting, exotic people.

IC: Of course, the Aquileonese had no intention of passing for Astarians--that wasn't their job. Once they'd become friends with their access agents, the officers convinced their friends to introduce them to more people--and since the definition of an access agent is someone who knows people who could be of value, those people that the intelligence officers were introduced to were very much of interest.Of course, no spy ring is possible without an infrastructure. Already a large crew of street artists--as they were called in the business--would be making their own arrangements, finding locations for dead drops, recruiting cutouts, and renting or purchasing apartments or houses to turn into safe houses. All of this was done discreetly, of course, through shell companies based out of Seasgate or Standast, or simply funds which allegedly belonged to one person--it wasn't that outrageous for a person to buy an apartment. A strict time schedule was adhered to, something that would conform to carefully studied trends of buying and selling of real estate in Astaria.:w:

The Slacian Union/Doing StuffIC:

The invitation was received by Brigadier General Krishn Vranoy. Quickly discussing it with the rest of the military high-command and getting approval from President Petrovich, he sent a reply to the Kiserre military. The Slacian Union accepted. From their ranks they sent two normal platoons, armed with assault rifles - paintball-firing, of course. They also had standard-issue armored grizzly bears for support. The bears were to be muzzled, with their claws padded. In addition, a Bang squadron was sent, armed with the same rifles along with grenades that exploded in torrents of paint. The rifles would most definitely leave bruises, the bears could leave nice bruises with a paw to the face, and the explosives in the grenades could knock a man down if he was close enough. However, none of it was lethal. At least, strictly speaking. Anything could be used to kill in a pinch, after all. IC: As the intelligence officers became closer friends with the assets, they began to see what motivated them: for some, it was fame. Others worked for money, and some for the fun of it. Many had unpleasant vices, some worse than others. However, only a few had access to the information that the agents wanted: late at night, after being plied with much drink, a few would brag about their work in "Project Reverene," and how important they were for it. Mental notes were taken by the Aquileon agents and plans were drawn up to convert a few of the researchers into full-fledged spies in the service of Aquileon.~+~Meanwhile, similar work had been going on in Standast, and inklings had begun to grow of a massive intelligence operation by Stan Intelligence. It wasn't proved yet, but it was on their radar. Meanwhile, several families immigrated from Aquileon to Standast, getting in easily thanks to their complete unremarkability. :w:
