Day One:

Karz, it's been years. Not since I arrived here, of course. I'm talking about the fall. By now everyone knows this whole city was the brain-mind of a robot. Guess they didn't build it too well. As soon as the Dark Hunters started swarming and killing everything in sight, the Toa-heroes stood up to them and were winning, surprisingly. Then, they launched it. Oh, Karzahni, that weapon. So vile a plan, they turned every Toa-hero mad with that gas, and they couldn't fight anymore. If the brotherhood hadn't been there, the universe would be doomed. But the gas stayed around, so that anyone who became a Toa-hero got infected with it. It was a nightmare. To become a Toa-hero was to step up to insanity head first.

Then, thousands of years later, someone built a sanitarium just for the poor Toa-heroes. But by that time, the gas was gone and only the rumor remained. so many Matoran quick-hid under their beds and cowered, dreading if they ever became one. And here I am. And I'm not strange-crazy, I'm sure of it! But so many Toa-heroes... Something else is going on...

Day Four:

No, I'm not crazy. I'm sure of it. No way in Karzahni. And I did see something.

I look out of my cell window and see the energy siphon crackle and fizz, warp-morphing into different shapes... And the guards around it got killed, I think. But something spawned. Some dreaded creature. Ohh, Karz. It tore through the wall and headed to the warden's office. I hope it killed him. But what the Karz was it? I can't believe I saw it. It's unrealistic. And I'm not crazy, I tell yah!

Unfortunately, every day now I keep look-seeing things. Like a sentient chair, growing in size, heading through the hallways. Or my arm talks to me. But I won't succumb to insanity. No, I'm a Toa-hero! I'm strong enough!

Day Twenty-one:

No way in Karzahni. The monster-thing didn't kill the warden! In fact, it strode in here last night and killed a patient! B-but it used my power! And anyone else's who gets put here! It's stronger than a Makuta now! It tore-ripped through that poor water Toa like paper! Oh, the poor girl... I tried to inform one of the other students about it in the recreational area-place, but the guards overheard me and took me to solitary confinement. But now I know the secret to this place, the real plan...

In about five minutes the head doctor will be "fixing" me in the medical ward. I think they intend to make me really insane. But no, I'm a Toa-hero! I'll never falter! To the end I shall stand for Mata Nui!

Day Twenty-two:

Hehe. Oh man, I feel much better. Muchbettermuchbettermuchbettermuchbettermuchbetter. Who? Me... I'm not crazy. Noooooo, I'm a Toa-heroes, I can't succumb. Or succumb anyone. I'm as normal as a three widget bill made of mozzarella cheese. I'm as happy as a Gukko. And I know the secrets of this place, and the doctor, and the wardendenden, and the monsterositytee. Hehehe. Hi, arms. We feeling gggggooooooooodd today? yesss. Much gooder.

And I'm as sane as anyone else here, hehehe...

Hehehe...

The Asylum. A prison where Toa are left to rot. As the latest resident of the Metru Nui Sanitarium, it's up to you to learn how to survive against the odds. Normally, this asylum would be bad enough, but something lurks the halls at night, just waiting for the opportunity to strike. No one knows where this thing came from, except perhaps those who created it. Its purpose? Unknown. Whatever it is, all you need to know is that you have to survive.

Who knows, you might even make it out of here.

The alternative is far worse.

----------

Provided by the staff, here is a lovely little map of the asylum, complete with lovely informational bits:

For those who can't download the PDF, the staff has provided a posting of the main map onto several bulletin boards across the asylum.

REoXe0T.png

----------

THE SETUP:

This universe works slightly different than the canon one. The Makuta never rebelled, no, but the Cataclysm still happened, in no small part due to the Great Spirit being overloaded from the strain of running an entire universe. After this, the Dark Hunters invaded Metru Nui. While they were beaten back, the Hunters were able to release a toxin that turned any Toa into a crazed lunatic, ranging from the bipolar to the schizophrenic to the completely psychotic. Not only that, but it was persistent. Matoran that turned into Toa were subject to these effects, too.

While the toxin dissipated, the rumors persisted. Eventually, one particularly intelligent Toa built an asylum for these poor, crazy heroes. Of course, not everything is as it seems. A monster lurks the halls at night, waiting for it's prey. Nobody knows what it's doing here, but those who get caught are never seen again.

Enjoy your stay.

----------

RULES:

The first and most important rule is that you can only be a Toa. No exceptions whatsoever.

Secondly, the monster cannot be killed, so no post saying you defeated it.

Thirdly, any and all innate powers, elemental, mask or otherwise, get taken from patients and absorbed into the monster. This means no elemental powers, but mask powers are only severely weakened (i.e. a Kualsi transports you 5 feet, a Hau can only protect against the lightest of attacks.)

Fourthly, your character enters the asylum after character creation, meaning s/he will not have any preexisting ties to anyone inside. You'll get assigned to general or solitary depending on which one you choose in your profile.

Fifthly, only two groups of people can play Staff characters; the GMs and those who gain staff characters as a reward for good writing and RPing.

Finally, your character MUST BE APPROVED before you may post. You may have one, two or three characters at any one time. Post character requests in the "Patient Counseling" topic.

Your character may have an item(s), but they must be approved by staff and follow these rules before your character can have the item.

  • Your item must make sense in a prison/asylum enviroment.
  • Your item cannot be a firearm.
  • You must be able to sneak your item inside the facility.
  • Your item cannot be an explosive.
  • Your item cannot be invisible.
  • Your item must be lightweight.
  • Your item cannot help you escape from a cell.
  • Your item cannot immobilize an opponent.
  • Your item must be approved by the staff before in-game usage can occur.

IC Nyhe:

The Toa of Water stood in Receiving, waiting for the transport to arrive. A few new patients would be arriving soon, and she wanted to greet them before... well... she didn't really think explaining it to herself would be rather productive.

"Ugh... This is taking way too long. That transport was supposed to be here an hour ago."

IC

Patient # 13-5-15-4-16 sat in the transport, observing his fellow... Asylummates? Neighbors, jailbirds?

He didn't quite know what to call them.

Maybe eyesores, this whole place was an eyesore. The indescribable walls of this uninteresting transport vehicle-thing were thorough eyesores. As was this chair or seat he was sitting on. This chair (chair, chair, chair, chair, chair, this chair ?) is an eyesore.

DISAPPEAR

His eyeballs and the spaces behind them almost itched, maybe it was the hairline fissures that covered everything he saw. He could see death, or at least, that's what you could describe it as. Death in the forms of lines and cracks and dots. He wasn't sure about the dots so much, attempts to kill objects with the dots seemed less effective. But, back to the lines. They were different for everything, anything close to death had fissures and nefarious lines crisscrossing it in some sort of psychedelic orgy. A skydiver or soldier? Practically nothing but lines!

Some things had less. He had seen some stuff he probably shouldn't have seen in his dreams. Creatures with many angles, above and beyond the three (width, height and depth) that his sort of creatures had. These ones had looooooots of 'em. In fact, they looked more like bizarre shadow architecture than living beings, it made him feel like a two or one dimensional being would feel upon seeing his, their, our? World. Hard to describe.

Those things hadn't had any lines, like their concept of death was either non-existent or so alien that it didn't register. He got headaches looking at those things, usually waking him before they came closer or even noticed him.

Retreating from his mind, he forced himself to try to ignore the lines and investigate his peers. Yes, peers was the correct term! His peers in the truck-transport-thing with him!

...but close to it

IC: Caetus/Scriva - Transport.

Caetus regarded his fellow inmates coldly, already calculating which of them would prove to be threats, and which were to be trampled over and brutally crushed underfoot.

Most of them seemed to fit into the latter category.

In a different part of the transport, Scriva nervously scribbled in her notebook, sketching her fellow prisoners, then crossing out her drawings and starting over. And over and over and over again.

IC Nyhe:

As the transport was parked, guards pulled the patients from the transport and brought them inside Receiving. There, they were put into lines as Nyhe took her place on a small podium.

"Ahem... Greetings. As you may know, you have been deemed a danger to yourself, to others and to society. As such, you have been brought to the Metru Nui Sanitarium for rehabilitation. I am your chief physician here, Doctor Nyhe.

"You may notice you can no longer use your elemental abilities and your mask powers have been greatly diminished. This is done to protect you. Please, do not struggle, do not fight back, and your tenure here will be as short as possible."

Well, maybe.

"You will be assigned to either general population or solitary based upon your original diagnosis. Ahem..."

"Toa Nakton, you will be assigned to Solitary. Toa Ikinu, you will be assigned to General. Toa... um... Patient #13515416, you will be assigned to General. Toa Caetus, you will be assigned to General, and Toa Scriva will be also be assigned to General.

"Now, I'm sure you'll all want to get adjusted as soon as possible. Dinner is at eighteen-hundred hours. Guards, please escort them to their... 'rooms.'"

IC: Scriva/Caetus - Receiving.

Scriva never once looked up from her notebook.

This time she was writing down names to go with her drawn, redrawn and scribbled out sketches.

Nearby, Caetus sized up the other inmates being assigned to general with him. If they were the worst this place had to throw at him, he was going to be survive here just fine.... And not just survive, either.

He was going to thrive.

*scratch scratch*

Gods, that scribbling was getting irritating. All ride long... That notebook was an eyesore. He gently felt his pocket, Seven Nights was still there. He was glad the guards hadn't searched him too thoroughly. He needed something to be able to cut that notebook's lines.

Maybe it's owner too. A ravenous hunger filled him as he scowled quite openly in her direction.

Or not

His thoughts had been better left unwritten and almost immediately after he felt sick and anemic, he allowed the guard to show him to his room and collapsed face down on the bed. The events of today were replaying in his head, he noticed an odd detail via playback. Nyhe hadn't had any lines...

IC: Nakton

He didn't try to resist the guards taking him to his cell. There was not much he could do with his elemental powers diminished. He didn't understand what was happening. The last thing he remembers was helping a matoran, the he blacked out and now he was here.

Nakton wondered what happend to the matoran.

IC Nyhe:

Nyhe looked over the patient files. She was surprised at what she saw. These cases were rather odd; a scribbling madwoman, a person who saw lines everywhere, a pyromaniac... wait... that last one describes half of Ta-Metru.

Oh well. More fun for me, I guess.

She found that she was most interested in Toa Scriva's condition. Her larynx was badly burned so she could only ever speak in a harsh whisper and instead of trying to get past that disability, it only pushed the poor girl further into insanity.

She pulled a guard aside. "Bring patient #6673541, a Toa Scriva, to patient counseling.

GM IC:

A voice crackled through the radio systems, loud enough to shatter glass. "Greetings all, and welcome."

"We here at the Metru Nui Sanitarium wish to ensure you of the best of health. Therefore we have made it our mission to ensure you leave here sane, healthy and strong again. Have an issue? then inform one of the guards and i'll address it immediately. Just remember, we will not stop until you are just as strong as you were before.

"This is Dr. Halmos saying good care to you all, and the best of health as well."

IC: Iyanu

Iyanu had stood at the back of the group, staring, looking directly into the eyes of the guards and the Toa, mouth slightly parted. He heard it all, yes, he knew what was happening, yes, but as to why he was here, no. He did not feel dangerous, only to help and... entertain? Yes. Not that it mattered to him. He rubbed his hand over the back of the other, then rubbed the music box on his waist, swinging by a small rope.  He allowed the guards to escort him, still looking into their eyes, his, unnerving, unflinching, everseeing, everknowing.

IC Guard NPC:

Heeding Nyhe's order, the nameless guard entered General Population. It wasn't a pretty sight, and the guard thanked his lucky stars he wasn't a Toa in Metru Nui during the toxin's reign. When he learned of the asylum, he became overjoyed that someone wanted to help

He turned to the door next to him.

IC

That loudspeaker had been an eyesore.

An earsore, too.

As Halmos' announcement had crashed over it, he couldn't help himself. Seven Nights had found his way into his hand, he stacked furniture up to the corner to reach the loudspeaker and... He killed it. Tracing the lines had been easy, it had so, so many, being such a fragile piece of electronics it was always close to "death."

He could still hear the announcement through nearby loudspeakers. Maybe he'd kill them too.

The toa was seated on his bed when he heared the loudspeaker.

Released when he was sane? He was sane. He had done nothing to wrong get there. Or so he thought.

As the thoughts echoed, his head started aching. The toa started screaming and grabbed his head. It was a very intense pain he had not felt since he blacked out with the matoran. Then he stopped. He stood up in silence and looked around the room. Then he tried to use his fire powers to burn the room until he was too tired to continue. With his powers reduced he didn't manage to make much damage. All he could burn was just the bed. When he saw the bed surrounded by flames, he laughed.

OOC: My previous post took place before the announcement was made.

IC: Iyanu

Iyanu listened to the announcement. Insane? No, he couldn't be insane. Those people just gave him a bad look that might have meant they wanted to kill him. He was acting out of pure instinct to not be killed! WAS THAT NOT GOOD ENOUGH?!
Shh, shh. It's over now. You're here, and you're here for good now. Just let it rest.

Iyanu took the music box of of its string and started to play one of the many songs on it. The sweet song echoed through the hallways and reverberated through the cells and other buildings, finding its way into each and every person and room. He did not want to be disturbed.

OOC: This might give some things away, but, recommend listening.

IC: Gida, Receiving

Sitting in receiving was a Toa of Lightning, having been told to wait for someone to get her by the guards that now stood by the door. Gida had not had a very good day at all. There was the fact that she had been brought to a madhouse when she was sure there wasn't anything seriously wrong with her. And there was the fact that they had disabled her elemental powers somehow. And taken her sword. And there was someone who only she could hear talking to her constantly. Okay, maybe there was something wrong with her. Yes, today was terrible. Don't think like that! This place is gonna be great! Shut up... Ah don't be like that, just look around! So many new people to meet, and we're safe from harm in here. Just let anybody try to get in through that fence! It's not there to keep them out, it's to keep us in. And stop talking. Gida was constantly in a mental argument, and had been for days. Instinctively she knew by now that her life was never going to be easy again.

IC:Nakton

Nakton woke up in his burnt bed.He didn't know how much time had passed since he blacked out. Sometimes he blacked out for minutes, sometimes for days. The fact that there were no windows in his cell help didn't help the toa's bad sense of time.

Nakton noticed music playing faintly in the distance. Determined to find the source, he used his akaku to try to find the source. The mask could barely see through the wall. The to a wondered why didn't the mask work properly until he remembered what the warden said. Nekton focused once again in finding the source of the music. With effort he was able to recognize silouhettes of the inmates near him, though the source of the music remained a mystery.

I saw the warden near the apparent players room. I decided to try and use my Matatu to move a pebble towards his head. If it was a bigger rock, it may have been harder but I managed to throw the pebble outside my cell towards the wardens head. I wanted him to go away. I didn't like being watched whilst I slept.

IC: Naeman- Receiving

Naeman, another new arrival waited in the receiving area, to be brought in and join the rest of the general patients. As he waited, he listened quietly to the ramblings of others in the room, repeating them in a very quiet voice, and giggling to himself afterward, finding everything, even the slightest noise or gesture, humorous. These things just kind of happened to him in quiet rooms, when he had nothing better to do than eavesdrop.
