In Gimp, you can use the magic wand/selection tool and click in the white sections. Once you've made your selection, delete it. Make sure you've added and alpha channel first, so it will become transparent. You can the tolerance of the selection depending on how general you want it to be. Save it as a gif (lower quality) or a png (higher quality).
