Arden mournfully waved goodbye as Aeolus walked away.

 

Many hours, one room, and. A book later, and Arden and Aeolus lay back, exhausted from expending all of their elemental powers in one go.

 

"When you said you wanted something steamy, I didn't know you were suggesting actually using our power to make a steambath."

IC: "Well, I'm here now, and I don't have any other skills to fall back on, so it doesn't look like I've got much of a choice," Septima sighed. "At least I won't have to worry about finding shelter from a storm or think about how many days will pass before I'll be able to eat again if I'm sitting in a cell. If I wasn't a believer of Mata Nui, I probably would've offed someone just to get in there already."

"Beats me, they never explained it further." I shrugged.

"Past-late to ask now..."

IC: Natharius.

 

"You believe in Mata Nui, but cheat and steal to make a living?" the clash of values perplexed him. "That strikes me as being somewhat contradictory..."

IC: "Yeah, well, I never chose this life; I tried to be normal, and I've tried to fit in, but no one wants to hire someone that isn't good at anything, and no one wants to be around the person who screws up everything she touches. I'm only good at being a thief because I have nothing left to be good at, but that doesn't mean that I have to stop trying to be a good person because of it," Septima explained, hoping that the Skakdi would understand. "So what if I have to steal to survive? That doesn't mean that I have to start taking from those less fortunate than I am, and I certainly don't have to start killing people just because something doesn't go my way either. I just find it a little sad that people who claim to be so high and mighty don't take the time to think about how their actions really affect the people around them."

"I actually know exactly what you mean..." Natharius mused. Skyra, Dorian and the rest were treated like heroes, but he knew them to be spiteful, and dangerous. Yet because they were Toa, and he was a skakdi, he was the one who the people hated at the end of the day.

 

"I've been on this island for a few years now, scavenging to survive. I stayed out of the battles, kept to myself, but then everything calmed down, and I decided to risk venturing into a Koro..."

 

He sighed, shaking his head, "...so of course the Koro I picked turned out to have been attacked just days earlier. Attacked by skakdi, I might add. And it all went to karz after that..."

"Natharius," he introduced himself, "As for why I don't leave, it's kind of because I can't. Long story short, I fell in with a guy who turned out to be one of the Turaga killers. We got in a fight with a couple of Toa, and lost. Now I have to pay a fine or do community service or something else equally stupid - they haven't decided yet. They told me to check back in at the guardhouse in a week or two, and not to leave town in the meantime."

IC: A Turaga-killer? This Natharius must have been really unlucky if he had been unintentionally running with one of them...

"It seems that I haven't been the only one to hit a patch of bad luck recently. Although...," Septima said, acknowledging the Skakdi's predicament as an idea popped into her head. "We might still have a chance to reverse the streak. If you're interested, that is."

IC: Natharius.

 

Natharius leaned forward, narrowing his eyes in suspicion. "I thought you said you worked alone?"

IC: "I suppose I can make an exception, just this once," Septima said as she picked herself up off of the ground, brushing the dirt from her armor before grabbing her satchel and slinging it over her shoulder. "As long as you've got the money for a couple of drinks, of course."

[Nato G]

IC: Natharius.

 

"I don't have much left, but maybe enough to cover a couple of drinks. Why do you ask?"

"Let's just say that if you put up enough widgets for two drinks," Septima said, holding up two of her fingers. "I may possibly know of a way in which I can repay you about fifty times over... in money, of course, and all you've got to do is sit down and act inconspicuous. You even get plausible deniability in the event that we get caught. Come on, I'll show you."

And with that, the Fe-Toa stepped past him and entered the crowd.

There was nothing for him to say; he was intrigued. Once again he was choosing to follow someone he barely knew into a situation that was bound to end badly.

 

And once again, his mischevious streak won through. He got to his feet and followed Septima into the street.

IC: Danaar Kaas (Near Ta-koro)

 

The most electrically conductive material is silver. While it would've been fancy to have the telegraph line made out of silver, it's much cheaper and almost just as good to use copper. Its prices have risen recently, after the Akiri had mandated the construction of many street lamps and fixng the monorail, but thankfully malachite and tetrahedrite ore are plentiful inside the mines of Ta-koro, so it's affordable. Still, I wonder how the karz Lenat afforded an over 100-kio long wire. Maybe he took a loan?

 

Anyways, I should focus. I dig out a sample of ash-covered soil, and put it inside a glass vial. I'll take these to my lab later and see if the soil doesn't fit for wiring. If not, then the insulation of the wire might be ruined over time. I've tried to create a better way to protect wires, but have been unsuccessful so far, sadly. I wish there were more alchemists on this island, because there's not much knowledge about chemical materials and transmutation that could help my work greatly. About metallurgy, sure, thanks to those cheeky Onu-Matoran, but that knowledge isn't very helpful right now. Well, there are inventors like Lenat and Stralix, but they don't study, they create things and be smug afterwards about them. Not very helpful either. Sigh..

Well, time to head back. The digging will begin in this area next week, so I don't have much time to waste.

IC: Septima moved her way through the crowd of people, winding her way down street after street until they made their way into the slums of Ta-Koro. The crowd began to thin out as they continued on their way, the buildings beginning to suffer from poor structual upkeep as the people started looking tougher by the dozen. Thankfully, both her and Natharius looked like they belonged there, which was enough to make them not stand out and cause others to view them as potential targets. A few streets and the successful crossing of a back alley later, and the local dive bar came into view.

Two bouncers stood by the door, watching to make sure any trouble-makers didn't try to force their way inside. One was a rather tall Vortixx, armed to the teeth with knives, a shortsword, a shoulder-mounted disk launcher, and a set of brass knuckles wrapped around his fingers, the other a Toa of Gravity with muscles the size of tree trunks. The Fe-Toa moved up to the door, giving each of them a nod as they let her by without issue and stepped aside as she told them that Natharius was with her as well.

Their ears were met by the roar of the local chatter as they stepped into the room, Septima's eyes taking in the large crowd of people before spying a free table over off in a secluded corner of the establishment. She moved towards it and took a seat, motioning for the Skakdi to do the same as a Le-Lesterin waitress made her way over to them and asked them what they would like to order.

"Two beers, please," the Fe-Toa said, watching her walk away before leaning towards her companion and dropping her voice down to a whisper. "Now, which of these fine, upstanding citizens do you think will be kind enough to help you pay off that potential fine of yours?"

[Krayzikk]

IC:

 

Saeva stared at the Vo-Toa, head slowly cocking ever so slightly to the left. Her spoon was held idly in her left hand, resting against the rim of her bowl as the Ta-Toa seemed to ponder the question. Her lips pursed subconsciously in thought, eyebrows arching upward slightly.

 

"... I'm not really sure what you're gettin' at, Sparky."

[Nato G]

IC: Natharius.

 

He looked around, taking in the crowd, then turned back to Septima. Instead of answering her question, he asked one of his own. "Why do you suddenly want to help me?"

[The Drink]

IC: "Think it's something involving whether or not you get stronger when you're mad."

Dumb question.

[Perp]

IC: Torana

"Yeah, I don't know what I was asking either."

[Timageness]

IC: "Let's just say that I've seen enough bad luck for the both of us, and leave it at that," Septima said quietly. "Besides, I'd like to be able to afford a room for the night myself so I don't have to go back to sleeping on the ground. Why, are you having second thoughts?"

[Nato G]

IC: Natharius.

 

"Forgive me for being overly suspicious," Natharius said, "it's just that the last person who offered to help me for no apprent reason was the one who got me into this mess to begin with."

[Krayzikk]

IC:

 

"Oh, well I can answer that. Yeah, if things get heated, things get heated. Saeva answered easily, cracking her knuckles cheerfully for emphasis. "Ain't intentional, just happens. Not really an issue, ain't uncomfortable for me, and I can just absorb some environmental heat to get the energy back."

 

"As enlightening as this conversation is," Her mother began dryly, eyeing the assembled group. "I have a few pressing concerns. Namely, where we're going to put you all. Normally I'd just send you to the Lavapool, but, well... Most of the other inns are being used to hold people that have been displaced. We might be able to host you all here, but that would take a little time."

 

"Why don't you all go out for a while, once you're done eating." Her father suggested, sipping at his drink again and examining the home around him thoughtfully. "We can rearrange a little, find somewhere for people to sleep. Either here, or we can try and find an open room in the village."

[Timageness]

IC: "Completely understandable, considering your current situation," Septima replied cooly as she looked around the room, surveying the potential marks. "But I'm not planning on making our presence known. All I wanted to do was walk in here, have a drink, and walk back out with a bit more money than I came in here with; that's all. I'm not looking to rob the cash register, start a bar fight, or do anything that might attract the attention of the city guard. Promise."

[The Drink]

IC: "If it ends up being too much trouble, I'm sure I can find somewhere else to shack up." Erzu replied. "To tell the truth, I'd say you've already done enough as-is. Seeing how rough things are here, I'd rather not be a burden if I can help it."

He meant it, too. Saeva's folks were good people, he figured it was his duty to be as little of a nuisance to them as he could. He could just grow himself a hammock in an alleyway or something, he'd be fine. Anyone looking for trouble'd be in a lot more danger than him, anyway. Ta was a military town, yeah, but under that carefree, fun-loving, and quirky tree-speaking front, Le bred them rougher than the rest of them, and tougher than leather.

He knew that first-hand.

"Well..." he shrugged, "...it's not like I've got anything left to lose. What's the plan?"

IC: Torana

 

"I'm just a guest here, in the Koro, let alone your own house. Having a family so kind as to let a wandering girl in for dinner is plenty generous in my book. I couldn't ask for any more than that..."

 

She scratched the back of her head.

 

"I'm used to getting cozy in a tree, and Ta-Wahi's pretty warm. It's really no trouble. Though, there's a notable lack of trees in the Koro, so I might head over to the Charred Forest and see what I can make work."

[Krayzikk]

IC:

 

"Nonsense." Saeva's father objected, brow furrowing faintly in disagreement. His daughter often did a more exaggerated form of the same when she scowled, making it very where she learned the expression. "You are both our guests, and to make you stay elsewhere would be horribly improper. And impolite. We'll not have you sleeping in trees when we can find room for you just fine."

"My husband means," The Fe-Toa cut in patiently, giving the tea-drinking Ta-Toa a look. "That you don't have to look elsewhere if you don't want to. Saeva's room is as she left it, we have a couch, and given a little time whipping up a cot isn't difficult. We would be delighted to have you stay here."

"They're stubborn."

[Timageness]

IC: Septima smiled.

"Simple. While we're enjoying our drinks, we'll keep an eye out for anyone who looks like they're getting a bit too sloshed, and I'll use my powers to separate them from their widgets when the opportunity arises. If I only take a fraction of what they have, they'll either assume that they lost it or spent a bit more than they were expecting to, if they even notice that it's gone missing at all. When we're done quenching our thirst, we pay up, walk out, and nobody's the wiser. After that, we find somewhere to safely split the money and lay low for a while."

She paused, catching her breath as she looked back at Natharius and waited for his approval.

[Nato G]

IC: Natharius.

 

"Sounds easy. Why do you even need me, then?"

[The Drink]

IC: His eyes flicked over to catch his rival's.
