IC: Nicole stopped as she saw a large figure in armor marching through the corridor. She stared, trying to hide her intimidation as he approached. She was tempted to ask the person; with the bulky armor it was hard to tell if it was a man or woman, about what she could do, but ultimately she could not quite bring herself to speak.

As the Vendarian seemed to pass her by she took a deep breath and recalled someone else she could try. It took her a moment before she recalled the name they had settled on. "Dave?" She asked. "I need something to do. Are there any small jobs I could do to make myself useful?"

IC Vincent

"Alright, should be fine..." The mechanic, after tweleve hours, had finally fixed what had been bugging him. It was actually a family small problem, but hey: a stich in time saves nine. "Now for some food," he thoight, "and mayve a luttle sleep adterwards." He began heading over towards the Mess Hall...

IC: Nicole looked around. No immediate answer from Dave. She continued to wander down the corridor, eventually seeing Vincent. "Hey," she called out, approaching shyly. "I'm guessing you're probably headed to the mess hall. You'll like it. They have salmon right now. I'd go with you but I had this brilliant idea to try talking to some people about their experiences in the war and... let's just say I think it's best I give the cook his space. I don't suppose you have any jobs I could do while you're eating?"

IC (Devas)

Devas brushed by the doctor, noting that something seemed to be troubling her. If what he'd heard of her (which was very little) she'd evidently had enough issues to get a nice little hearing from the command staff. Considering that the command staff tolerated attempted slaving, he was hesistant to press the investigation further. He rather needed to sleep when he was off-duty after all. With that thought fresh in his mind, he stood at the entrance to the mess hall.

He took the scene before him in.

Well. They still had a slug on mess duty. That was inconvinent.

I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are the good people and the bad people. You are wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.

IC Vincent

"Oh, hi Nicole." The mechanic gave a friendly smile. "Let's see... I don't suppose there's anything too big for you to do... Or for anybody to do, really... Unless you wanna take out the trash but I doubt that..." The mechanic went through his head over what there was to do and what he could trust Nicole with. "... Ah, right. There's a shipment of plants for the botanist coming in. Maybe you can go and help with the lifting?"

OOC don't ask me, I barely know anything about that myself. Humva just told me we have a botanist. Sorry.

IC: "Sure," Nicole replied, before starting to make her way down the corridor. She made her way towards the airlock. When she arrived she approached the door, putting a hand on the frame. "I was told there were some plants that needed to come aboard," she said. "Perhaps I could help you."

OOC: I don't recall us having a botanist, but 'botany' was listed as an area on the ship. Blimey, I just had the weird thought that maybe Nicole could give it a try.

OOC: I was going to wait for Humva, but he's off right now so I guess I'll just take care of this issue now.

IC: "Yeah," one of the workers replied. There were a few of them gathered outside, around a few carts worth of plants. "We've got a whole shipment here," he explained. "I don't think another person to assist in the heavy lifting will hurt."

Nicole placed the medical bag onto the ground before she stepped out (she made a mental note to herself she would need to find a strap or find some other way to carry it while freeing her hands). The first was a large box, a few holes allowed brief glimpses into the flowers that were hidden within. "How many plants do you have?"

"A lot," a female worker replied. "Most are from Earth, but we got a few specimens from other planets." She handed Nicole a tablet displaying information on each of the plants, a picture next to them, plus information on its species, home world, and how to take care of them.

***

Nicole took a moment to catch her breath as the first shipment was placed on the floor of the botany lab. The place was huge, enough room for thousands of plants. A worker stepped in and examined the databanks. He promptly began to give Nicole a series of instructions related to how to treat each plant as it was removed. A brief search revealed the ship had thousands of soil samples in which to plant each of them. The worker began to direct her on which types to put in.

As she planted, Nicole felt something she had not felt in a long time; she almost started to feel relaxed. There were a lot of plants and this was a great responsibility, but perhaps it was just what she needed; something to do that could be of great help to the crew. There were plants of all kinds; some grew vegetables and fruits, others simply served to assist in stabilizing the atmosphere, she'd certainly have to do a bit of reading on each one, but on the other hand it would be a chance to get away from the crew while doing something useful for them.

IC: Ashley

Ashley's ears flicked as she looked at her cards. "Drat!" Ashley handed Rehn one six of spades.

"Welp, you get to ask again! You must be getting beginner's luck."

IC: Nicole wiped the sweat from her face as she planted the last specimen in the shipment. Her hands were dirty (hand sanitizer; another thing that she needed to add to her first aid kit). Her uniform was stained with soil, but it hardly mattered to her. As the workers left to get another box, Nicole began to look through the database, examining carefully how to handle each plant.

IC:

Can had noticed that the new plants were being loaded onto the ship this morning, but he hadn't really considered helping; to a Belter, plants were there to provide air and food. Any interest in the artistic aspect of gardening was lost on him, and loading in a ship's plants was dirty work; he'd do it if ordered, but it was nominally beneath an officer. This was a rather strange attitude for someone who had spent so much time working on maintenance, but to him that was natural; when everyone lives on a spaceship, everyone works on it. Can had actually realized that his welding certificate would need renewal a few days after they left the Brasilia, but that would also be the point when they would be leaving civilized space, so it wasn't as if certificates would matter.

That being said, thag thag thaggity thag thagness.

"A memo was sent to Astaria asking if it would at all be possible to make a flying goat."

"The Astarians responded that making a goat fly would be trivial; making it land safely would be another matter entirely."

IC: Another load was carried in. More plants. As dirty and exhausted as Nicole was she was hardly ready to give up now, if only because there wouldn't be much else to do on board. She began flipping through the inventory on a tablet, identifying each plant based on the picture. After the first round she had started to get the hang of identifying soil types, so that part she could handle fine.

Carefully and gently, she began to put the first plant onto one of the many compartments, ensuring the right soil was present. She would have to consult the inventory to find out how much water each required, but that was another matter.

IC: Another load was completed. Nicole took a moment to wipe her hands on her clothes. "Not a bad job," one of the workers remarked.

There was another load, which when opened, brought in a few surprises. "Some of these aren't from Earth," she was told. Nicole opened the database again and began to look for the alien plants listed.

IC: "If you use that soil with that plant, it will become poisonous for humans and Mantis to eat." A low, rumbling voice said from behind the doctor. A Rockman stepped out from between assorted plants, walking towards her. "I was told we had a guest helping us. Your uniform is medical, and I have fortunately been yet to need such services, so I do not believe we have met. Signi Ovechkin, combat specialist and head of botanical research and crew support."

OOC:Posting on a tablet during a lull at work, can't promise quick responses. :P

IC: Nicole turned in surprise at the voice, startled by the presence of a large rockman. Her instincts made her nervous, though she knew if Gaven was anything to go on there was no real reason to be afraid.

"Nicole Sarany, medical staff," she replied. "I haven't had many opportunities to do medicinal work here, which reminds me I think I left my first aid kit by the airlock." She turned toward one of the workers. "I left a bag by the airlock door. Could you get it for me and bring it here?"

The worker turned and left. Nicole wiped some her hands on her dirt-stained clothes. Her hair was disheveled and covered in grime, and bits and pieces of soil littered her face as she looked toward the Rockman.

"In the meantime I was told that there were some new plants being brought aboard and I thought maybe I could make myself useful. It keeps me physically occupied and doesn't require me to talk to people much, which helps a lot. My brain is kinda... messed up, it's a long story, and I'm guessing I'm not the first person you've seen with some problem or another."

IC: "Indeed. Everyone that sees combat and the injuries that result has such scars eventually. At least for humans and Zoltan. Mantis and Rock culture has enough of that to desensitize." Ovechkin stepped forward, extending a giant, boulder-like hand larger than the doctor's head. "Your assistance is appreciated, doctor Sarany. I am unsure as to your area of focus, however regardless of if you are aware, we have plants and plant products that may help with your mental anguish."
