Hodor
The Fall. A beautiful mess of a movie.Which "The Fall"? There are three movies from the last twenty years with that name. The Lee Pace one. Sort of The Princess Bride for pretentious people and/or people who like practical effects. Queen of Liars
Rurouni Kenshin 2: Kyoto Inferno Much like the first one, it's a surprisingly good live-action adaptation of the anime/manga, which captures the spirit of those original works very well.Thankfully they decided to split the Kyoto arc into two movies, rather than trying to cover all of it in just one, which means they don't have to cut as much from the anime/manga, although some cuts I guess are still unavoidable. So this is the first of the two Kyoto movies, and I did like it a great deal, although not quite as much as the first film. There's definitely some details missing from the originals here and there which are very noticeable in their absence, but for the most part they did a good job with remaining faithful to the source material. Action sequences were great, and there weren't too many of them either, and pretty much all of the cast did an excellent job portraying their characters. Plus, the soundtrack is once again bloody excellent. Having said that though, I definitely have several issues with the movie. The biggest of them is actually the same issue I had with the first movie - the character of Aoshi. With the first one, my complaint was that for some reason they didn't include him in the movie at all, despite including pretty much everything else relating to his role in that arc. I still find his absence from that movie to be completely bizarre. Now, with him being very important in the Kyoto arc, they had to include him this time around. However, him not being in the first film means that he didn't get the introduction and backstory he had in the anime/manga, and they sort of had to awkwardly come up with a reason for him to be there. So he just kinda shows up out of nowhere, and they took his original backstory and changed some things around to try and justify his sudden appearance. Which unfortunately doesn't work very well at all, and his motives for hunting Kenshin basically make no sense. Then on top of that, his actual character is done very poorly. In the original, he was an intriguing tragic hero who went through a very compelling character arc. In this movie he's... well, he's just kind of a **** without any real character beyond that. It's really disappointing to see how they handled this character. I'd like to hope that the next movie improves on it, but the damage is already done. Still, I really enjoyed the movie otherwise, and it definitely succeeded in making me feel nostalgia for the anime/manga, which I'll probably have to go re-watch/re-read soon. Before I do that though, I am eagerly awaiting the next movie, which gets released here on DVD in just over a week. I'll certainly be picking that one up. Queen of Liars
Ex Machina Well, that was quite an excellent film. Though I must say, I bought it on DVD and was rather annoyed to find that it had four trailers on it before the actual movie started. Skippable thankfully, but only skippable one by one. I thought it being 2015 and all, we were long past that silly nonsense, but I guess some companies still fail to grasp the concept of not annoying the heck out of the consumer, and not making them reconsider their decision to actually buy the movie instead of acquiring it through other, annoyance-free means. The Hip Historian Iaredios
It has been a while since I have commented in this topic. Since then I have seen a few movies. Lets see if I can remember them all.Mad Max: Fury Road. Awesome, no, epic movie. I wish I saw it in theaters twice. Watching this made me watch for the first time...Mad Max. EXTREMELY slow, though it does give good background information on its 21st Century sequel.Avengers: Age of Ultron. Some problems with the movie that others have pointed out (where did the thing with Banner and Romanof come from?!), but I loved the discussions concerning theology, and the relationship between Ultron and Vision felt mythological (like Mata Nui and Makuta).Jurassic World. Average movie, though some parts felt forced to show the remains of Jurassic Park. The Indominus Rex was pretty cool and kind of scary if you think about it (movie didn't scare me though, just thrilled me). Sometimes though the movie felt like a forced overglorified monster movie. I told my brother and mother something: as God created humanity, though corrupted, His image can still be seen in us. Similarly, humanity and its evil, destructive and cold nature (it was humanity's evil of greed that caused its creation) can be reflected off of the Indominus Rex.Inside Out. Great movie, also the first Pixar movie I've seen in theaters since Wall-E.Escape From Alcatraz. Fantastic film, was also great to see the source of so many prison-based stories and spoofs. The Last of the Mohicans. One of my favorite books and movies. Perfect as always, though near the end from the Huron chief discussion to the end of the movie my dog kept whining, resulting in the movie experience being ruined and me yelling at her. Stupid dog... Sumiki
I've managed to see more films in the first three weeks of college than I have over the past year: Ghostbusters (which I've seen before, but a while ago), Jurassic World (which was just not very good), The Phantom of the Opera (A+ for the music), and Frozen (enabling me to understand even more cultural references). Sumiki
The Princess Bride, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Big Hero 6, Fantasia, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. (My friends and I have launched a series of movie nights and I'm not used to seeing so many films.) I'd seen all but Big Hero 6 and Fantasia before. I kind of feel like Fantasia is just one of those movies that you have to see but doesn't necessarily have replay value. They also really ruined the ending of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring which was kind of off-putting to a classical nerd such as myself. But, then, I guess that's why people have differences in personal preference. But as a non-classical music nerd I have no opinion on the ending of 'The Rite of Spring'. Although, from what I recall, Stravinsky himself agreed with you. Needless to say he had a few opinions on how his piece was used. Queen of Liars
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK Well, it's certainly a very interesting and unique film. The only other of Park Chan-wook's work I'm familiar with is his Vengeance trilogy, and this was definitely very different, but it's still and excellent and quirky film. One of the things that struck me the most about it was the pretty incredible attention to detail. There's always something in the background which you could easily miss if not paying attention, and it works very well in making the setting feel more real. Visually, it's stunning. Like, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence levels of stunning. The story wasn't anything too special for the genre, but it was still very engaging and contained some good characters. The setting and visuals were definitely the strong point though. The Night's King
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (I'm attempting to watch all six films in preparation for Episode VII coming out this December, even the... not-so-memorable ones. But Episode II was still better delivered than Episode I in any case...)It's only now that I realize how shoddily done the Star Wars prequels were done (with the exception of Episode III for the most part as I recall). The CGI was so second-rate to begin with... I mean, The Two Towers came out the same year as Episode II, and the CGI work done for Gollum alone was immensely superior to whatever graphics were used for Episodes I & II. That, and the screenplay and storytelling was all so chop-shop.Hilariously enough, I found this article on a random website which talked about remaking the prequels with the following ideas. The details are in the spoiler tag below, hidden for the sake of not having a wall-of-text post here: Storywise, I think the remade prequels should take place from the middle of Episode II through Episode III. Basically, the Clone Wars cartoon timeline (a timeline that, unfortunately, has to be discarded in favor of live action.) We never see Anakin as a child. We hear about it, he goes back to Tatooine looking for his mother, but it’s a much bigger thing. In fact, let’s start there. The search for his mother is Anakin’s story arc in the new Episode I. Fade up on Anakin Skywalker, teenage Jedi apprentice, escorting Senator Padme Amidala back to her home planet of Naboo on some kind of mission. Along the way, he reveals to her they met years earlier, and we simultaneously learn Anakin’s backstory while beginning to develop his relationship with his future wife. Qui-Gon is a member of the Jedi Council and he and Obi-Wan Kenobi head out to investigate a mysterious Clone Army. They discover that it was, very obviously, ordered by a Dark Lord. They encounter his apprentice, Darth Maul, and wage an epic battle but it’s no use. Maul gets away. Anakin discovers his mother is dead but wins some kind of major battle, possibly something involving the Hutts and Sandpeople, and we end there. Down ending? Yes, but this isn’t a happy story.Episode II becomes a full on Clone War adventure with the beginnings of Anakin’s allegiance to Palpatine. The majority of the film would be Jedi armies all over the galaxy, fighting this evil clone army as a distraction. Back on Coruscant, Palpatine’s plot becomes more and more obvious: gain control of the Senate to rule with absolute power. In working the politicians and Palpatine, Anakin and Amidala fall in love and begin to have a relationship, a huge no-no because he’s a Jedi and there’s a war going on. Something happens, she gets hurt and when Anakin confides in Palpatine, his true identity is revealed: The Dark Lord of the Sith and master of the Clone Army. Anakin is forced to fight and defeat Palpatine’s apprentice, Darth Maul, but when Palaptine steps in, Anakin knows what true power is. Feeling hopeless, powerless, and unsure how to help his ailing love, the film ends with him becoming Darth Vader.Episode III begins with the Clone Wars ending. As the Jedi finally come back to Coruscant they finally piece together the sinister plot. A Sith and his new apprentice control the universe. Anakin and Palpatine begin to systematically destroy the Jedi who start to flee across the Universe to regroup. This gives us time to see how evil Anakin has become and give each Jedi their proper fighting goodbye. In this film we kill Qui-Gon, Mace Windu and the like. Meanwhile, it’s Anakin’s evil that sends Padme off into exile, she has the kids, Anakin tracks her down only to find his old master, Obi-Wan on the planet of Mustafar. Then it pretty much ends like Revenge of the Sith, with Anakin being defeated, Obi-Wan leaving, and Darth Vader becomes more machine than man. Getting back to the topic at hand, I'm debating whether or not I should include that Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated film--which preceded the cartoon series--in that marathon. Vorahk1Panrahk2
The last three:Jurassic World: I maintain that, although it's fun and has a few well directed set pieces, I'm not sure I can call it a great movie. It's better than Jurassic Park 3 by far, but I still much prefer the first two. Inside Out: Better than it was the first time I watched it. One of my favorite Pixar movies, and easily one of their best. Still my favorite movie so far this year. Roman Holiday: Cute, and charming, but also a lot more depressing than I thought it would be. I don't know what I will watch next. Probably One Day because it has a score by Rachel Portman and those are almost always pleasant to listen to. Maybe Interstellar because it's been on my watch list since I bought the DVD earlier this year. Maybe something else entirely.
