  1. Third party Bionicle will likely never take off simply because MOCing exists. When Bionicle fans want something more than the official sets offer, they build it themselves. That's because Lego isn't selling individual action figures. They're selling a building system that's inherently customizable. The only thing I could really see sold are a few custom parts, or custom instructions, as have been done with Lego before. The distribution of full-scale sets would be impractical and likely run into legal trouble depending on how it's handled. I really could not imagine myself buying what amounts to a fan-made bootleg.
  2. The mask hunt worked in 2001 because it was the main focus of the story, which at that point was more open ended. By the end, one could safely assume the Toa will have collected all the masks without having to see them do it. The comics showed them getting only a few masks, so there was still a whole bunch of adventuring for you to fill in yourself. In this way, it was sort of a less frustrating equivalent to HF's cliffhangers, since it left wiggle room for your own stories while not undermining the main plot. I will agree that 2003 botched it, not just because there were new masks out of nowhere, but because they made absolutely no difference in the end.
  3. I never really understood the logic behind the Technic hockey sets. I guess desperate early-2000s Lego was thinking "Okay, Bionicle is selling like gangbusters, if we make our new sports line similar, surely it'll succeed!" But it just seemed weird and out of place to have hockey being played by deformed robots with sticks coming out of their torso. They were some neat parts packs at least, but on their own merits they aren't that good.
  4. I've totally done this, though in instances where there are new parts I usually try to find the closest substitute, which winds up looking questionable even in the best of cases, not helped by the inevitable motley colorscheme. Still, even if the results aren't worth showing off, they're usually a fun building experience.
  5. I never got any of the Toa Metru. I guess at the time the new Knights' Kingdom figures and X-pods held more appeal than just another Bionicle set for me. Still rather foolish of me though.
  6. Funnily enough, Kopaka was also the only one to have different left/right arms when he upgraded to Nuva (Lewa and Tahu changed to have identical arms.) So yeah, asymmetry is a big part of his aesthetic. So... My favorite mask? IDK. I'd probably say the Pakari. It has a nice shape that's good both as a worn mask and as decoration, it's also come in a lot of sets in many different colors. Also a lot of important characters in the story wore it (like Onua, Takua, Onepu, Nuparu, at least one member of the Chronicler's Company depending on the source, etc...) Which gave it a sense of coolness.
  7. Nice, but the arms do break the colorscheme. Other than that, I don't have too many complaints, except that the torso looks a little awkward depending on the angle, but that's minor.
  8. I don't mind Greg at all, but I don't think he should do nearly everything like he used to. I'd be interested to see other peoples' takes on Bionicle.
  9. It's short but satisfying. A little easy, but it's for kids so its to be expected. Physics can be a bit wonky, especially regarding the grappling hook, but it never becomes game breaking. Minigames are a mixed bag, but you're never required to spend that long on any of them. So, yeah. Try it. One thing to note though: there's a good deal of optional stuff that you can easily miss if you rush through the game, so try and talk to people and search around. It shouldn't be too hard to find, and it always gives good stuff.
  10. Look, Greg may not have been behind every bit of Bionicle story, but considering he wrote the comics, books, serials, and was the one who talked to the fans, it meant that whoever was calling the shots didn't matter, it all came in through a filter of Greg. And not everybody liked that. Yes, you could argue that Greg's non-Bionicle writing is better, but who's to say going back to Bionicle won't mean he falls back on bad habits? I'd much rather have him on a shorter leash this time.
  11. Neat. To be honest, I'm only surprised that this didn't happen sooner.
  12. My vote goes to the '03 Matoran here. the original design was cute, but they could hardly move. the '03 design retained similar proportions while adding articulation and proper hands. sure they lacked a flingy arm, but they did get the Kohlii sticks to make up for it. I also liked that they had a gear in them. It made them resemble big sets more and reflected the idea of them becoming stronger in the story. The only real shame is that they didn't come in more colors.
  13. Well, the Mata were some of the nicer Bionicle sets aesthetically (best masks for sure,) even though functionally they weren't much more than a big gearbox with limbs.
  14. Excellent. Truly excellent. Your next task: Lego Crocomire, maybe with a pull-back motor in its belly to recreate the game. I know I seem like I'm joking, but I'd actually like to see that. I might make it myself someday. In fact, I'm opening up LDD right now.
  15. #3027. It had awesome Silver bricks (I still have them.) It had a baseplate, wheels, minifigs, articulated pieces... Just a ton of neat stuff that still shows up in my creations to this day.
  16. Welp, that was pretty much exactly what I was gonna post, so I guess I can just reiterate this.
  17. Considering the Bohrok were one of the niftier (and more popular) things to come out of OG Bionicle, I wouldn't be surprised if there was an attempt to reintroduce them. It'd be tricky to do, especially if you wanted to encapsulate all their original gimmicks. Lego doesn't really do models made of 90% new parts nowadays. (And they're better off for it, but still...)
  18. 2003. Though if you want to be pedantic, those "Spring cleaning" Creator/Bionicle tubs from post-'03 had the occasional pieces due to their nature. Grey. Yes, just grey. Not dark grey or the very rare light grey (which never made it into technic or even system iirc.) Okay I legitimately can't remember. I want to say metallic bright red because that's what it resembles, but I know that isn't it.
  19. Ah yes, but the big question for a Tamaru set is whether you'd want a teal body or a dark green one. I'd actually prefer dark green but I'm pretty sure I'm alone in that opinion.
  20. Well, a friend of mine has a white Hau lying around. I hear it's somewhat rare. I never really got in to mask collecting so that's about it for me.
  21. No, not at all, actually. That's pretty cool and I'd love to see it if you can finish it.
  22. Now that things have settled down, I want to re-iterate this statement of mine that got drowned out when it was first posted.
  23. Since this thread seems to be the place for it, I might as well get this little semi-controversial nugget out now: If Bionicle is going to return, I do not want it lasting as long as it did the first time. While it was impressive that Lego could sustain a story-driven line for so long, it was obvious in later years that it's own scale was bogging it down. I stopped following Bionicle because I felt that the story was going nowhere with no foreseeable conclusion, and all the extra stuff they were adding on year after year could no longer hold my interest. I'd have far preferred a tighter story about half the length that could preserve the sense of progression and keep a consistent tone throughout. And that's what I'm hoping for in the potential revival. But I'm not setting my hopes too high.
  24. Another feature of the Bohrok canisters that I'm surprised want mentioned yet: The canisters are shaped so that they can tessellate. Stack a bunch of hem up on their sides and it's supposed to resemble the Bohrok hive.
