So we all know that The Journey to One was a bit underwhelming to most fans-great animation, but the rushed and rather underdeveloped plotlines of G2 prevented it from being all it could have been. However, after watching the series again-for like the fourth time-I came across an interesting realization, and I thought I'd see what everyone thinks. I'm assuming that everybody has either watched the series or knows everything that happened. So after Ekimu and Agil save the Toa with a little Lightshow-I am not sorry-Gali goes after the pieces of the Mask of Ultimate Power only to have her spirit drawn into the Shadow Realm. Now, if you're like me, you probably assumed-and the writers never did anything to dissuade us otherwise-that Makuta was responsible for this. However, watching the episode this latest time, it occurs to me that it's not actually stated that Makuta is the one responsible, and you wouldn't think that to be the case given the fact that he seemed to be unaware of Gali's presence. So the question becomes, if Makuta wasn't responsible for this, who-or what-was? I have a few possible theories: 1. The portal Basically, this theory suggests that it was a natural property of the portal that it would start sucking things into it, the way it would afterwards do with the weapons of the Toa and Umarak himself. As such, when Gali got too close, it sucked in her spirit, having not become powerful enough to draw a physical form through it. 2. The Shadow Realm So this thought may seem a bit out there, but it's essentially the idea that the Shadow Realm, whether by passive nature or by an actual will that it possesses, seeks to keep evil things trapped within it and didn't want Makuta breaking out; ergo, it drew Gali in so that she could learn how to defeat Makuta. That, or it wanted to draw anything and everything in and started with her spirit, but Makuta's portal allowed her to escape. 3. Umarak Given Umarak's apparent power over shadow, it makes sense that he would be able to manipulate the portal to some degree. As I highly doubt Makuta thought to tell him not to do anything like that-I doubt he told him much of anything to be honest-it could be that he thought attacking Gali would be a good way to make things easier for him, not knowing he was dooming his master in the process. Of course, had he known what Makuta was planning to do to him, he might have been glad. 4. Agil This theory is essentially meant to give some meaning to Agil's disappearance. The idea is that, as opposed to simply infusing Umarak with the Elemental Light energy that helped complete the portal, Agil actually did this to affect the portal as well, and was the one responsible for Gali's spirit being drawn into the Shadow Realm in order to bring about Makuta's banishment.
