It's a simple concept, I'm just not sure how to say it...

Basically, you select a face, and 'extrude' a new face from the original, connected by lines and faces.

Well, that depends on what you want to make.

I'd say, right now just familiarize yourself with the basic commands, and do a bit of menu exploring.

One more important command is 'e' for extrude. Usable only in edit mode.

Once you've got that down, work with some basic geometric manipulation. Turning cubes into pyramids, or hexagons into diamonds... that sort of thing.

Shift-a to add.

"Tab" to enter edit mode.

'g', 's', and 'r', to grab, scale and rotate.

Right click to select.

That's the basics, as long as the interface hasn't changed.
