Ever wondered why certain Mata Nui Matoran switched masks when they appeared in MNOG2, choosing an otherwise uncommon Kanohi? This story offers a possible explanation. Enjoy! SPARES Nuparu was no stranger to fear. Too many times had he found himself at the mercy of wild Rahi or some other creature who threatened to end his life. But no matter how real the danger was, he never let himself be swallowed by panic. As he stared at the broken black Komau on the floor of his hut, however, panic became a very real possibility for him. “I … am so … sorr-.” As he faced the mask’s former owner, his heartlight nearly went out again. Nuhrii was an exposed torso suspended in mid-air, his armour stripped down to his organic insides. He was next in line to receive the rebuild every Matoran was to receive after Naming Day. Despite rebuilding dozens of Matoran already, the sight of one in such a state still made Nuparu jump. Nuhrii’s maskless expression of horror and anger didn’t help. This is what happened: Nuhrii had complained to the engineer of a fault in one of his optical sensors. Nuparu had removed his mask so he could have a closer look, placing the Komau on the ground nearby. As he reached for his tools, however, he accidentally knocked over a piece of a broken down Boxor. This piece landed on the mask, shattering it beyond recognition. Nuparu now had to quickly find a replacement. Still stunned by the sight of Nuhrii, the engineer completely forgot about his unfinished apology to the Ta-Matoran. “Do you, uhm, …” he finally spoke with some difficulty, “… have any requests regarding your new mask?” Nuhrii visibly relaxed as he pondered which mask to choose. “Can I get a Hau?” “I’ll check the pile,” answered Nuparu. He hurried towards the room where he kept the spare Kanohi, jumping over the disassembled parts of inactive Bohrok on the floor. “A black one, if possible!” called the Ta-Matoran from his chamber. “I’ll see what I can find!” called Nuparu back. He began to rummage through the assortment of masks which, he soon found, had massively decreased in size since he last had to pay it a visit. He searched for black Haus but couldn’t find any. Then he tried to search for Haus in other colours, again with no success. Resigned, Nuparu grabbed the first black coloured Kanohi he saw. This’ll have to do, he thought and returned to the chamber to face Nuhrii. “Did you find it?” enquired the Ta-Matoran. Nuparu cleared his throat. “Well …” *** Nuhrii walked noiselessly into the Ta-Koro square, trying not to catch the attention of his fellow tribesmen. Unfortunately for him, everyone seemed to be looking at him. At the Suva, Keahi and some of his comrades were conversing. As Nuhrii came past, their conversation turned into a series of giggles. Keahi decided to speak up. “Going for a swim, are we Nuhrii?” The comment left the group of Ta-Koro guardsmen in hysterics. Nuhrii shot them an angry look and continued on his way. That stupid Onu-Matoran, he thought to himself. Breaking my Komau was one thing. But replacing it with a Kaukau, of all masks, now that is the work of Karzahni! Nuhrii continued to fume as a couple of visiting Po-Matoran hewers passed him. One of them broke free of the group and stopped where Nuhrii was standing, eyeing the Ta-Matoran with curiosity. He too was wearing a Kaukau. “Hey, Kivi!” his compatriots called behind him. “Are you coming or not?” “In a minute!” the Po-Matoran called back. He turned his attention back to Nuhrii. “Let me guess,” Kivi asked, pointing at Nuhrii’s new mask. “It was the only one left?”

So I was browsing Matoran on BS01 yesterday, and something just caught my attention. Apparently, it has been revealed recently that in MNOG 2, Ta-Matoran Nuri and Po-Matoran Kivi, who both wore Kaukau masks in the game as it was released in 2003, were actually planned to wear Komau masks instead: they only turned out the way they did due to a misspelling in the code. BS01 has embraced this fact and changed both Matoran's bios to say they canonically wore Komaus during their time on Mata Nui, however I'm not sure if I would share their stance. While I can kinda understand the initial intention behind making Hahli the only Kaukau wearer in the game for uniqueness' sake as the protagonist - and while I will grant that I don't remember any MNOG 1 Matoran wearing Kaukaus either - the fact remains that canon has recorded these two Matoran as wearing Kaukaus for two decades before this was revealed. Regardless of the initial intention, since it was never corrected in-game, I think it could alternately be considered that the canon that we got may take precedence over an intention that ultimately wasn't reflected in the product. But at this point it's really just a matter of personal preference, so I'm curious: What do you all think? Do you prefer these two Matoran as wearing Kaukau masks, as we've seen them for a long time? Or do you take Templar's initial intention as canon and like them better as Komau-wearers? No judgement either way, of course! I'm just still processing this fact so I wondered how other people felt about it too ^^

for sale Kanohi Kaukau Nuva in Pearl Light Grey - for sale

Hi. I am selling mask Kanohi Kaukau Nuva in Pearl Light Grey color (43856) Good condition. Price: 100,- Eur -
I've been thinking recently that it looks like LEGO may not have had an entirely clear idea on how to handle the different variations of the Kanohi Kaukau from the get go and I suspect they may have even experimented with matching the mask color to the color on at least some Toa Mata, which might explain why we got a trans-yellow Kaukau even though none of the Toa are even remotely yellow. Considering how only some of the solid Toa colors can be approximated with transparent plastic (looking at you, Pohatu) and also considering the fact that the six Kaukau are already the odd six out of thirty-six by design, do any of you think that it may have been a better idea to just match those to the eye color of each Toa instead? Of course, that would've required that some Toa have better eye colors to begin with (looking at you, Tahu), but does anyone agree that that would've been an overall interesting and perhaps more consistent approach? If we consider the eye color of each Toa their "tertiary color," then that decision would've made sense in terms of uniformity and consistency. Personally, I can easily imagine a scenario where the Toa Mata had Toa Metru eye colors and each Kaukau matched each Toa's eyes. Here's how that would've looked: Lewa with a trans dark red Kaukau Kopaka with a trans medium/light blue Kaukau Gali with a trans orange Kaukau Tahu with a trans light green Kaukau Onua with a trans dark green Kaukau Pohatu with a trans dark blue Kaukau Perhaps it's a little counter-intuitive, but I do see a great deal of appeal in this approach. What do you guys think?

Does anyone know the origin/provenance of the dark Purple Kaukau. To my knowledge only two people have made custom trans-Purple Kaukaus, both of which were a different shade. Additionally I could only ever find one picture of it (on biomedia) bearing a specific watermark, mikedotbe, which is also found on numerous pictures of misprinted kanohi. This makes me think it's a misprint rather than a custom, however, it is often left off lists of misprinted or prototype kanohi. Any information about it would be greatly appreciated. http://biomediaproject.com/bmp/files/gfx/Collectibles/2001/Purple%20Kaukau.jpg Update: Flintsmith confirmed that it is most likely one of his customs

OKAY So. I just got a mask in the mail the other day, that I'd purchased under the assumption it was what the seller had listed it as. A Trans-Medium Blue misprint. I thought to myself, "This isn't like the pictures for the Trans-Light Blue or 'icy blue' kaukau.. I need it!" The Trans-Medium Blue color happens to be one of my favorites from the transparent colors Lego produces naturally. So I asked the seller to cut the price down, since it was listed at 99 Euros.. seemed a bit too high. And my gut told me right. Upon receiving it, I found that I'd purchased the same icy blue "Light Blue" kaukau misprint I'd had since 2006. So I have to ask here, since I'm not sure where else to ask, but IS there a Trans-Medium Blue misprinted Kaukau at all? I've contacted all the other members on BrickLink selling the same listing for pictures, and each one looks like the Light blue misprint. In short, do these look the same, or is there a different colored misprint I'm not seeing online?

Just decided to swing back into the Bionicle fandom again for whatever reason. I was thinking about this. The Kaukau seems to be a very specialized mask. It lets you breathe in water and liquid protodermis, but while it's activated, you can't breathe air. Unless you are actually a Toa of Water, or at least spend most of your life by shores, I don't see any reason to wear one, at least as a primary mask. If neither of those apply to a Toa, why would (s)he wear one as a default mask? I'm asking because I just found out that one of the four Toa Mangai of Ice is said to wear one according to BS01, and I have no idea why he would have it. (Well, ice is water, but would an Ice Toa ever really need it? Especially in an urban setting like Metru-Nui?)

Hi. So, I want to ask. Let´s say, I would be able to make Trans-Purple Kaukau. I bassicaly have all what I need, now just waiting for Dye to arrive. Do you think, that making an auction, for let´s say, 4 of them, for 30$ per one, is fair? Cause, you know, there haven´t been salo of one for quiet looong time. Is there anyone who would want one? Is there so many peoples that want them, so 4 wouldn´t be enough? Let´s just say, I would managed to make them, and sell them, for atleast 30$ per piece. Then what? I would try to replicate Transgrenie (Or how it was called) Miru and Metallic Purple Akaku... Would you be interested in them too?

I recently came into possession of a misprint 2001 trans-yellow Kanohi Kaukau. The mask is definitely an attractive one and I'm already rather fond of it, but I'm considering putting it up for sale if anyone is desperately trying to obtain it. Prices for the item on BrickLink seem to be unforgivably high right now; I'm seeing the standard price for the mask is $15-25, but that seems a bit too low for me on the other hand. The lowest I will consider selling the Kaukau for is $30, so anyone who really needs it but can't afford BrickLink can feel free to make me an offer. Shipping will be very cheap regardless of your location (I live in Bulgaria), and will include a tracking ID. UPDATE: Given the prices on BrickLink and recent interest, my minimum asking price for the mask will be $50. Here is a photo of it. Shipping will be $5 tops with tracking. I am also open for trades; I won't rush this, so anyone interested, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Misprint? Prototype? or just a knock off : Kaukau Nuva
Slumber posted a topic in Bionicle Discussion
Hey, recently through some purchases on ebay i stumbled across a curious looking mask in a bundle of normal pieces. I may be some what knowledgable within the misprint/prototype realm of bionicle however i have never seen such a mask before. So i feel it may be just a knock off mask. However i would like absolute confirmation and i would appreciate anyones help. -
Hello guys, I know this is probably a common sought after request, but I was wondering whether anyone is willing to sell their light-blue kaukau kanohi misprint? thanks!
-
Hey all, does anybody know of the origins of the Trans-Orange Kaukau? I recently picked one up and it's got me wondering. I know it isn't considered a true misprint, but of course it also deviates from the usual color pattern. Bricklink prices seem to indicate that it's rarer than the average '01 mask as well. Anybody know why it made it into fairly broad production? Early attempt at a red one, maybe?

I've been wanting to make Kanohi Kaukau in custom colors, but I can't find any good tutorials, can anyone please show me a working link to one or explain how to make one?

http://notanoveltyaccountok.tumblr.com/post/118328211660/lego-inside-tour-day-one-all-the-cool-stuff-ive a tumblr user posted a haul of goodies from a Lego inside tour including a transparent blue Kaukau/Mask of Water. It is the rarest g2 mask released so far at only 200 pieces, and from the packaging looks to be exclusive to this specific event. This is absolutely unfair, and in my opinion a bit of a jerk move from Lego. Gali was known for her transparent mask, yet she is the only Toa so far to not have a transparent or partially-transparent mask. I know that the clear Hau was also an exclusive, but 1,500 pieces is a lot more than 200. Lego knows that a transparent mask for Gali is one of the most-desired variants, and yet they make hers the rarest. It also strikes me as a little bit sexist that the sole female character's mask is the hardest to obtain.
