Presumably it's possible for the game to end without everyone dying, hence certain players not playing their spiritual roles. We'll see the ending at the end because it's the end - why would we learn about it at the beginning? Most things don't start at the end. On Bota Magna, everything is about to fall apart.

Souls can be used to raise your soul level at a bonfire, and for all sorts of other things, such as purchasing items from merchants, repairing weapons and armor, or losing when you die horribly. Easy way is twinking max armor and weapons onto a new character and invading new players in the Burg. Hard way is soloing NG+7, naked, with bare fists. Staff have an unfortunate history of being targeted Round 1, no matter who it is. Something about killing a staff member the first round is "cool", I guess. That said, if he joined and just "happened" to be a doctor-role who could protect themselves... =P is this the end?
