IC: Scriva - Patient Counselling.

Scriva considered the offer. She was used to her throat burning every time she spoke; the pain her made her who she was today. She wasn't sure if it was a part of her identity that she wanted to give up. "Thanks for the offer," she rasped, "but I'll be fine."

"Okay, but the least I can do is give you a citrus drop." She opened a drawer in her desk and pulled out a few candies of various colors. "Here. These should help."

"Ah... thanks," she put the drops in her pocket. The pain was tolerable for now.

I simply stood there and listened, I didn't really have anything to say. There were certain questions I could ask, like why a monster had been allowed to roam the asylum, but I didn't want to anger the doctor.

IC: Kovika - Cell

Darkness. Madness. Cell. Light.

Kovika woke with a shock, he was not aware where he was exactly, but it seemed to be some sort of cell. It was cold and unfamiliar.

Where the Karzahni am I? How did I get here?

Kovika felt for his amulet, still there. He felt around for his disc launcher and his ice blades. They were absent from him.

Wherever I am, they clearly won't like the feel of frost covering their forms. Who could be holding me? Dark Hunters? No, I'd probably be dead by now if that was the case.

Kovika turned around and saw the door, it appeared to be made of protosteel. He decided that whoever had him captive, he should probably wait until his confiner came to him. He sat down, closing his eyes and meditating, trying to recall the last events he knew before this, whatever this was.

"I was wondering... Do you think Caetus should have a funeral? I don't think anyone knew him very well, but... well... I just think he deserves it. Ko toputapu ora, you know."

OOC:

Ko toputapu ora is Maori for "life is sacred." Real doctors use Latin, Matoranoid doctors use a weird blend of tribal languages like Maori. I imagine it's like the Matoranoid equivalency of "do no harm" for doctors.

"I saw him die...." Scriva's voice was hoarse whisper, "....no matter how bad a person he might have been, no one deserves to die like that." She looked up at Nyhe. "Yes, he deserves a funeral."

Again I felt unable to say much of anything, maybe if I had met this Caetus I would have had something to add. I hadn't seen him die like Scriva had, I wasn't sure how she could act so calm after witnessing something like that. In the meantime though, it seemed Nyhe had to get back to a patient.

So we set out to the west side of the rec center where this library resided. As expected it wasn't all that impressive looking, but it had books, and that's what mattered.

I pulled a random book out of a shell and blew on the cover, sending a small cloud of dust into the air. "It's a...cookbook?" Well what was the point of that? We weren't even allowed near the kitchen.

I pulled another book out of the shelf. "This one is...not a cookbook..." I showed the cover to Scriva. "It's a dictionary."

"That's.... sort of better than a cookbook?" Scriva said uncertainly. Replacing the cookbook, she pulled another volume off the shelf. "Gardening for Dummies.... why is this even here?"

Well, it was nearing lunchtime. Halmos stepped out of his office to go meet a new arrival; a Kovika. He had apparently been out on the trip over.

As he walked up to the cell, he instinctively reached for a dagger in case of emergency.

Kovika was deep in meditation, looking at the future, pondering who or what had brought him here, where 'here' was, and why in Mata Nui's name was he being kept here? What purpose did this place serve?

As he sit in deep thought over recent events, Kovika's meditation was disturbed as he heard a voice say two words: "Hello there."

Kovika did not reply or open his eyes, if someone wished to speak to use him and had no need to rush, he would let them take their time to explain.

I frowned, these were really not the kind of books I'd been hoping for, I searched the shelves for something more to my liking. "Ah here's a novel..." I pulled it out of the shelf, when I looked at the title more closely I sighed. "A children's novel, but still a novel all the same." Whoever put this library together...probably wasn't much of a reader, or just liked making sick jokes on mental patients.

Scriva kept going through the shelves. The books were in no particular order, but occasionally something jumped out at her. In this case it was slim binder sandwiched between two larger volumes. She pulled it free and skimmed through. It looked like old, outdated plans of the building.

"Old plans for the building," Scriva commented, scribbling down a copy of what she'd found into her notebook. "Might help me finish the map I was making of this place, even though they seem to be pretty outdated."

"Why do you think I'm writing it down?" Scriva smirked, holding up her notebook to compare her existing map of the parts of the asylum she'd visited so far to the old plans. They didn't quite match; the designs had clearly been changed several times before the place had finally been built, but the basic layout remained the same.

Hmmm...an idea was forming in my head...I though it was a pretty good one, but I needed to see what Scriva thought.

"We could record people's movements this way couldn't we? Or even a monsters..."

"I like the way you think," she pointed at the eatery, "the first patient died there," she then jabbed at finger towards the cell blocks, tracing the monster's path, "the monster came down along this corridor, killed the inmate in that cell, then left back the way it came."

It just...went right into the cell? What was the point in having a lock on my cell if I couldn't keep that thing out?

"I have...another idea. If you don't like it that's fine but...what if we stayed in the same cell at night? With one of us always awake while the other sleeps? That way if the monster does come...we can wake the other and get the out of there." I knew I could never sleep knowing that thing could attack me unprepared. This way we at least we have some sort of warning, at least I hoped.

"I mean, I know we just met...but I feel like I can trust you. I certainly don't want anyone else around here watching me sleep. They might be worse than the monster."

"I don't think anything here's worse than the monster," Scriva put one of the candies Nyhe had given her into her mouth, wishing she'd brought some water with her. "But sure. I'd be happy to keep an eye on you. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep much anyway..."

I sighed, happy that she agreed. I liked my personal space well enough but...that monster was out there...I didn't want to be alone if I could help it. Besides Scriva was quickly becoming a friend I wanted to be around.

"Great!" I said, smiling for a moment. The fact that I could smile at all in this forsaken place was a miracle in itself. "We can use your cell or mine, doesn't matter to me. We can switch between them for all I care." I realized then that there would only be one bed, but then again, one of us would be awake at all times anyway, so that wouldn't matter.

I froze for a second...did I really want to go looking for something so dangerous?

Well, then again, I supposed it was better than letting it look for me. And it seemed like it only came out at night, at least as far as I knew.

I realized I was hesitating. "Yeah! Let's do it." We probably wouldn't find anything anyway.

She grinned, glad that the other Toa had agreed to help her. She probably wouldn't have been able to do it on her own. "Now, Halmos said it escaped from a cell it was being kept in," she pointed back to the map she'd made, "when it killed Caetus last night, it came down this corridor here. If we backtrack from there, we might be able to figure out where its cell is...."

...and find out if Halmos had been telling the truth or not.

"Ohhhh I see." It was a good plan, we just had to retrace the monster's steps, and what we found would prove if Halmos was as honest as he tried to make himself appear. "Seems solid, let's go."

After walking for a while, Scriva managed to lead them back to the corridor. "There's my cell, and that one...." she pointed to the one with the hole melted through the door, "...that's where Caetus was killed."

It was one thing to hear about a monster, but seeing actual evidence of it...and what it could do...

I felt a little faint.

"I...see why you'd prefer my cell." Anything to get away from this. My cell was a bit further away down the hall.

IC: Scriva - Primary Holding.

"I know," Scriva said grimly, consulting her roughly-sketched map once more. "Behind us is Main Office and Receiving...." she pointed off to one side. "Somewhere on the other side of that wall is the Recreation Area." She looked at the passageway ahead of them, the direction she'd seen the monster slink off to the night before.

"There's a whole lot of stuff up this way. The Warden's offices, the Medical Ward, the Psych Ward, and somewhere past the Psych Ward is the Security Offices." She looked up at Lana. "Where should we start looking?"
