The Nerevarine is the reincarnated spirit of Indoril Nerevar, a Dunmeri war here, who was brought to Morrowind to fulfill the prophecy created by the Daedric Prince of Dawn & Dusk, Azura. He battled the devil Dagoth-Ur in the Red Mountain and destroyed the Heart of Lorkhan, capable of turning mortals into gods. Indeed, he became semi-immortal, becoming immune to all diseases that would plague normal beings of the world, so that only death by age or combat could defeat him. Afterwards, he managed to destroy one of the Tribunal, the three gods of the Dunmer, and claimed his ancient sword Trueflame, a weapon far beyond the power of conventional Daedric artifacts. An island where you are almost completely isolated from the rest of the universe, sealed in behind mountains with psychic aberrations stalking the wastelands and the the Brotherhood of Makuta sending hit squads after you - or you being in those hit squads.
