  1. Over the past 2 years I have been slowly working on a scientific investigation of the Spherus Magna Planetary System from BIONICLE. Do you want to know the strength of the surface gravity on Bara Magna? The orbital distance of the Red Star? Take a look at the below links to find out the answers to these and way more questions you probably never asked. I’ve spent so long on this and poured so much time and effort into it and I am so proud of the result. I hope any of you that are interested will check it out - if you get even a tenth of the enjoyment out of it that I did making it, I think it will be time well spent. I’ve got two versions of the document linked below, the Summary version (which just contains my results without any of the workings out or maths behind it) and the full version (that contains all 53 pages of my full methodology): Summary Paper: https://www.dropbox.com/s/35bia0e6ikh3zu7/The%20Science%20of%20the%20Spherus%20Magna%20System%20-%20Summary%20Paper.pdf?dl=0 Full Paper: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mxfb3igfxwoem5m/The%20Science%20of%20the%20Spherus%20Magna%20System%20-%20Full%20Paper.pdf?dl=0 Here is a preview of some of my results - a fully to scale map of the system!
  2. Approved by Than. So yeah, title basically says all. This is the new official topic for the TV show known as Star Trek. Discuss any of the 5 series or various movies, fan films, comics, spinoffs... whatever. I guess I'll start off the discussion. What is your favourite series? Mine would have to be Voyager, with DS9 following behind. Next Gen is my least favourite, except for maybe Enterprise, but I've not seen enough of it to judge. Love them all though, really. Discuss away!
  3. Just a few days ago, a new show began on the Science Channel called "MythBusters: the Search". As you may know by now, the original MythBusters show officially ended just a little less than a year ago. This new show that just began features ten people competing for a chance to become the "next generation of MythBusters". So it looks to me like MythBusters has remained so popular that they are now looking for some new people to co-host a new running of the show. The first episode was on last Saturday, and while I won't spoil the exact content, I will mention a general idea of what you can expect for the entire series. Basically, the contestants will test two myths, one done in teams and one done as individuals, then at the end of the episode, one of the contestants will be eliminated from the competition. There will be a total of 8 episodes, so that means there will ultimately be two winners at the end, presumably to become the new hosts of MythBusters. New episodes will be on every Saturday, so if you're interested in seeing where MythBusters will go next, be sure to watch it. I know I certainly will.
  4. Hello BZPers (is that really what we call ourselves?) This is going to get a little wee bit technical and scientific, and astrophysical, geological even. Sciency. I know the world of BIONICLE doesn't really have real world physics, but I was wondering anyway, does anyone think that Spherus Magna (and by extension, Bara Magna, Bota Magna and Aqua Magna) have/had plate tectonics? Today, in astrophysics, astronomy, geography and geology, it is thought that a planet needs plate tetconics in order to have life on them, for several reasons. One is it is indicative of active core inside the planet. And without an active core, you get no atmosphere, and by no atmosphere you get no oxygen, at least in the real universe. Another reason is that with the moving plates, and the constant recycling/reformation of the plates, all the stuff of life is replenished on our Earth. Things like large amounts of water and carbonate (the mineral form of Co2) is recycled back into the Earth as the plates move as well. I've gathered some text from articles on the subject. They are both a bit long, but hang in there please! I have something to say afterwards... Here is a bit of text taken from the article Plate Tectonics Could be Essential for Life at Astrobio.com Says Spohn, “plate tectonics replenishes the nutrition that primitive life could live on. Imagine a top surface that is depleted of the nutrition needed for bacterial life. It needs to be replenished, and plate tectonics is a method of achieving this.” Spohn found that the further he delved into the issue, the more important plate tectonics seemed to be for life. For example, it is believed that life developed by moving from the ocean to the kind of strong and stable rock formations that are the result of tectonic action. Plate tectonics is also involved in the generation of a magnetic field by convection of Earth’s partially molten core. This magnetic field protects life on Earth by deflecting the solar wind. Not only would an unimpeded solar wind erode our planet’s atmosphere, but it also carries highly energetic particles that could damage DNA. Another factor is the recycling of carbon, which is needed to stabilize the temperature here on Earth. Spohn explains, “plate tectonics is known to recycle carbon that is washed out of the atmosphere and digested by bacteria in the soil into the interior of the planet from where it can be outcast through volcanic activity. Now, if you have a planet without plate tectonics, you may have parts of this cycle, but it is broken because you do not have the recycling link.”<END OF QUOTATION> Another article, "Does a planet need plate tectonics to develop life?" from phys.org says about the movements of plates and habitable planets: Plate movements Plate tectonics provides a mechanism for this global thermostat. Most volcanism on the Earth occurs at plate boundaries in response to plate tectonics. And the most important volcanic products by mass – by a large amount – are two greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide and water. As they move over the Earth’s surface, some plates get recycled back into the mantle, at places like the Marianas Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Enormous amounts of water and carbonate (the mineral form of CO2) get recycled back into the interior as they do. Plate tectonics also form mountains, and one of the major sinks of CO2over geological time periods is weathering of mountains, where CO2dissolved in rainwater reacts with silicate minerals, forming new minerals, and drawing down atmospheric CO2 levels. In concert, these mechanisms act as a thermostat. If the Earth gets too hot, high levels of rainfall and erosion start bringing CO2 levels down. If the Earth gets too cold and freezes over, the erosion mechanism stops. But volcanism, due to plate tectonics, continues pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, and levels build up, eventually melting the icecaps. It was this mechanism that allowed Earth to recover from a global ice age in the Neoproterozoic, about 600 million years ago. Habitable planets This association between habitability, and plate tectonics, has become so entrenched that the search for habitable exosolar planets has focused on super earths. These are rocky planets larger than Earth where the odds for plate tectonics were thought to be higher. But the case is not so clear cut. Over the past decade, simulations of these super earths suggested that they may not have plate tectonics, but rather be in a stagnant-lid state, where a hot interior powers high levels of volcanism, but without moving plates. Our recent work has looked at the question from an evolutionary viewpoint. How do Earth-like planets evolve from their hot, violent beginnings to their eventual cool, quiescent twilights, radiating their last heat to space? We found that the evolutionary track a planet takes depends not only on its size, but on how it starts. For example, two planets identical in every other way, but with different starting temperatures, may evolve down very different evolutionary paths. We also found that plate tectonics may simply be a phase in the evolution of planets, and that planets may begin and end with stagnant lids.<END OF QUOTATION> Now, we do know that Spherus Magna had (or maybe have?) a core, which is, or was, comprised of Energized Protodermis. But do we know it acts like planet cores do in the real world? Earth's core generates heat, some of which is done through uranium in our core (yeah there's radioactive material in there), which by warming the adjacent molten material, rises to the earth's crust. This powers continental drift creates earthquakes and volcanoes, and mountains. But the movement of the molten iron of our world's core also creates magnetism, which protects the surface of the earth from the UV radiation coming from the sun. The fact that the core is semi-liquid is what makes the tectonics possible by the way. Now, the question is, does the core of Spherus Magna act like this too? Does SM even have an atmosphere? Wouldn't the 40,000,000 feet tall mechanoid the Great Beings built on there make that impossible? I mean, there is oxygen on there, or an equivalent, because beings, organic and biomechanical, have beem shown to have lungs. But an atmosphere would be needed to keep the oxygen in right? So is the atmosphere just super huge, reaching further out than Earth's? Or does the robot go through the atmosphere without any complications, like the atmosphere somehow breaking, if that's even possible to do by going through it, or being pierced constantly? And if plate tectonics does appear on Spherus Magna, what do you think the geography looked like in the past compared to the present? One last bit of speculation. When Aqua Magna and Bota Magna split from Spherus Magna, did they bring some of the Energized Protodermis with them, forming smaller cores of their own? It would seem like that would be necessary right? But again, real physics don't apply to BIONICLE, but it is still fun to theorize with the mindset that there are some kind of physical and scientific rules to all of it. Most of the best speculative fiction set in different worlds have its own rules and system, and follows them after all. I've found another article from Astrobio called "Earth’s Breathable Atmosphere Tied to Plate Tectonics?" It also has a bit about astrobiology later on, but I've only quoted the first two parts of the text below, The rise of oxygen is one of the biggest puzzles in Earth’s history. Our planet’s atmosphere started out oxygen-free. Then, around 3.5 billion years ago, tiny microbes called cyanobacteria (or blue-green algae) learned how to carry out photosynthesis. They began using energy from sunlight to make their food from carbon dioxide and water, giving off oxygen as waste. But it took another 3 billion years for oxygen levels to climb from trace amounts to at least 20 percent of the atmosphere, or high enough to support the emergence of complex life. And so far the mechanism behind that rise has remained unclear. Now a new study by University of Exeter biogeochemist Benjamin Mills and his colleagues offers a new potential clue. Using a computer model, they showed that plate tectonics may have fueled an increase in oxygen between 1.5 billion and half a billion years ago. In particular, a process tied to the way continents remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere may have increased the supply of phosphorus, a key nutrient for photosynthetic microbes in the ocean. The paper was published this month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. “This is a novel perspective for the late Proterozoic—a critical time of dramatic climate change, rising oxygen in the ocean and atmosphere, and origins and diversification of complex life,” says Timothy Lyons, a biogeochemist not involved in the study. From Seafloor to Terrestrial “Weathering’ The chemical weathering of rocks releases calcium ions in rivers and oceans, where they react with carbonate dissolved in the water. The product of that reaction, calcium carbonate, is then deposited onto the ocean floor, where it becomes limestone. (Photograph ©2009 Greg Carley.) Continents play a crucial role in the carbon cycle by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide mixes with rain water, forming a weak acid (carbonic acid) which slowly wears down or “weathers” rocks on land. The process releases minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the rocks. These minerals then combine with carbonate and settle at the bottom of the ocean forming layers of calcium carbonate, or limestone. In other words, the weathering process simply pulls carbon from the atmosphere and turns it into a layer of sediment on the seafloor. However, continental rocks aren’t the only route by which carbon is removed from the atmosphere. Ocean ridges, the places where fresh crust is made on the seafloor, can undergo a similar “weathering” process. In fact, seafloor weathering was the main route of carbon removal in the early chapter of Earth’s history, before the formation of continents. According to the new study, the rise of oxygen may have been due to a shift in balance between the two processes—between seafloor and continental weathering. Also, bump ;P
  5. I was looking through old threads, and saw a topic I wanted to give my thoughts on but was unable to do so due to it's age and the rules regarding reviving a thread so I decided to give my thoughts on the topic here: You can see the offending thread here: http://www.bzpower.com/board/topic/12862-which-powers-can-affect-voporak/?hl=voporak The reason I make this thread is I believe there are some misconceptions on the nature of Voporak's ability based on the contents of thread, thus I seek to rectify these misconceptions. First thing we must do is establish what Voporak's Powers are, Now obviously his power has something to do with Time, as he can create a temporal field and sense changes in the flow of time. (Due to the Kanohi Vah.) However that leads to an important question. Just what did the staff mean by the word "Time." I believe this is where the misunderstandings arise. So what is time, well according to the Scientific community. (Some are split on what exactly this means but most are in general agreement.) "time" doesn't actually exist, what we call time is simply out observations of objects moving through Space relative to a certain position. And that "time" is simply one or more dimensions of space. (In truth Space and Time are one and the same.) This is understanding time in the framework of General Relativity. However I believe that is not what the Bionicle verse means when they are using "time" in the context of The Mask of Time, and most instances of the word and concept as the whole in the verse. I believe they actually mean time in a more anthropomorphic, ancient, almost mythological understanding. (Which makes sense given the series undertones which I'll go into more latter.) Time in this sense refers to the "Arrow of Time" or how he distinguish the flow of time and the past from the future. What is this difference. The difference lies in the Laws of Thermodynamics particularly the Second Law. This law states that Matter and Energy in a closed system has a tendency to go from a Low Entropy state to a High Entropy state in an attempt to reach thermal equilibrium. (It's why Heat "flows" into Colder areas until both are a uniform temperature unless maintained and isolated from "outside the closed system" an example would be the earth being supplied energy from the sun, without this constant intake of energy, energy on earth would eventually even out and grow stagnant into a High Entropy state.) If you think about it this makes sense in the context of the Bionicle Lore. The three most powerful mask in the Mataron Universe are Creation, Life, and Time. (As in these three forces are the most important and without them the universe would fall apart.) If you think about it all three of them are the three principles most important in understanding closed systems. (The Great Spirit Robot is in essence a self-sustaining closed system, as it was created by the great beings it makes sense they would want to emphasize the rules at work in complex organized systems.) Creation - The Act of putting into order a functioning object in the first place, Life - The Changes and Staving off of entropy to make the system function and perpetuate(Even if in this sense it's in a non biological reproductive way it could be seen as the whole of the Mataron universe as a giant organism and it's repair and maintenance and adapting is the "Life", and Time - The tendency that all things will eventually wear and break down without repair and is in fact inclined to do so. (For example a puzzle(Or a Lego creation.) Will not magically form from individual pieces, however it takes very little effort for them to brake apart and lose their organized form. (Indeed to actually put the pieces together in any complex or meaningful way requires outside effort where it no longer becomes a closed system.) In other words, Voporak does not simply "Speed an objects motion up" or "Fast Forward" otherwise as many people in the other thread pointed out A laser, Gravitational, or Magnetic Wave attack would simply hit him faster not disperse, in same way he should even be able to destroy physical structures, like boulders or weapons since if his power works like General Relativity then it would just make the rocks reach him more quickly. In addition many people in the comments (correctly) state that lasers and Gravity and EM waves don't lose power with time but with distance and the waves hitting objects and other waves per Netwon's Laws and they are right when talking from a standpoint of general relativity. However Voporak cannot create particles to simulate weathering and erosion. (Otherwise his method of defeat by Teridax should have been a non-issue if he could create things out of thin air, but he was unable to since "no amount of time passed would create air where there is none." Thus we are left with the only logical way his power makes any sense is if what the Bionicle verse calls "time" is simply the effects of the "arrow of time." Or making an object go from a Low entropy state to a High One, Turn Order into Chaos. Speed up the Law of Thermodynamics to get closer to Thermal Equilibrium where the energy is stagnant and dissipated and unable to pose a threat to Voporak. Now for some other claims raised by the previous thread comments. One is that Magnetism and Gravity should have worked due to Teridax using Telepathy to dodge Voporak, and reasoning that he must be unable to effect wave attacks since he is unable to dissipate telepathy. Well my answer is that Voporak did not know Makuta was reading his mind and even if he did could not see the telepathic waves or see any signs or tells that Makuta was using them. This makes sense if we assume Voporak can choose what object he "ages" in his field. Seeing has he doesn't turn the ground to dust and fall through it where ever he goes and doesn't deaden all sound and can hear orders from The Shadowed One, this seems a safe assumption. Which means he must identify an object before he can chose to "Age" it. If he noticed his body being binded by Gravity or Magnetism no doubt he would quickly disperse and weaken the waves. As for powers like Anger, or Fear, in the comics and Mask of Life film whenever the Rakshi use their powers they point with their staffs and send an energy projectile. Since the Rakshi's power's come from the Makuta is reasonable to assume Teridax gives a tell that can be read so it's possible to evade or defend against if one has the right tools. Another thing to consider is using a Vacuum to defeat Voporak is a rather indirect way for Teridax to defeat him, since Teridax has 42 Rakshi powers in addition to his strength, shadow hand, and intellect. It's reasonable to assume that powers such as anger, fear, magnetism, gravity, etc would have been unable to effect him otherwise Teridax would have used those, at the very least he was unable to come up with a creative way to use them that might bypass the time filter while in the heat of battle with both Voporak and The Shadowed One. (Seeing how Teridax was injured, lost his wings, and used such an unusual tactic we can assume this is one of the few times Teridax fought seriously and did not hold back as Both Opponents at least together could give him a run for his money and needed to take out the person that could track the Mask of Time which HE NEEDED, at least temporarily.) Thus we can assume based off the context of Voporak's feats and ability description, the philosophy of Bionicle, and Teridax's actions that Voporak's powers are more based on speeding up the Second Law of Thermodynamics and increasing entropy then time powers in the sense of Time Travel, General Relativity, or Alternate Time Lines. As for attacks that can beat him, perhaps anything either immune to the effects of entropy or something with more energy then Voporak can dissipate at a safe rate, perhaps someone immune to entropy or has control over their physical and molecular structure. Similar types of reality warping hax like probability manipulation. If you enjoyed the read check out my first Vs Arena thread where I pit Voporak Against another character with a very Hax like physics bending Ultimate defense Accelerator: http://www.bzpower.com/board/topic/22202-vs-arena-thread-1-voporak-vs-accelerator/ If you'd like to read more on entropy and the concept of the "Arrow of Time" I'd recommend Sean Carrol's book "From Here to Eternity" he uses cleat allegories and examples so even if your not good with the Mathematics of it, (They aren't necesarily to understand the broad ideas.) you can get something out of it.
  6. Dangers of Okoto A Comparative Analysis of the Physiological and Cultural Distinctions Between Various Antagonistic Forces ---------------------------------- An introductory Overview After the initial report on the native sophants of Okoto, the preliminary investigative team discovered evidence of an invading force. Although they could not interfere directly with the situation, they were able to follow the actions of a group of warriors that the Morehu summoned, and furthermore capable of observing the various entities with which they battled, and furthermore had encounters with two individuals who, thankfully, decided against exposing them to the natives--mostly because they themselves were not willing to be exposed. What follows is a recount of the five various species, and their known behaviors: the Skull Spiders, the Lord, the Scorpios, the Eirian, and the Kaukino. Note that the last two names come from the individuals the investigative team spoke with, and are the only members of this list to be confirmed sophants themselves. There is also one last addition to the Morehu report, further detailed at the end of this. Part 1: Skull Spiders The Skull Spiders became a menace to the greater Okoto population after the Lord of Skull Spiders somehow obtained the Golden Mask of the Skull Spiders. Despite their name, Skull Spiders appear to be more closely related to the insect-like lifeformes of Okoto than the anthropod life forms; they only have six limbs, two of which are adapted specifically to lock into the telepathic "ports" of the Morehu and other creatures with similar structures. From what could be determined, the natural use of these limbs is to imbue the victim with a strong urge to protect Skull Spider nests; however, at the time of the investigation, the Lord of Skull Spiders was using the Golden Mask to alter that compulsion into destruction of Masks of power. The natural behavior of Skull Spiders is not clear, again due to the interference of the Lord, but from observation and conversation the swarming behaviors they exercised during the investigation is quite unnatural. Skull Spiders come in four known colors: Red, Green, Silver, and Blue. Red Skull Spiders appear to be the rarest breed, despite having the largest range of location; it is unclear at this time whether they have any unique abilities or are simply powerless mutants. Green Skull Spiders tend to make their home in the south-west regions of Fire and Earth; the signature coloring is given by a sub-dermal chemical which reacts to the presence of life forms, which allows the Skull Spiders to locate potential hosts even through the rock of the Earth region tunnels and the thick smog of the Fire region. Silver Skull Spiders prefer the northern Ice and Water regions, where packets of air in their carapaces lighten their weight to a point where they can move incredibly swiftly. The Blue Skull Spiders, whose coloration is due to the thickness of their shell, dominate the middle range of Okoto; while the ones in the Region of Jungle resemble other Skull Spiders aside from their color, the ones in the Region of Stone have a unique mutation that gives them a pointed, but non-venomous stinger tail. Of particular interest is the Skull Spider's post death usability. The body of a Skull Spider retains the telepathic compulsion that it had in life--anyone foolish enough to wear a Skull Spider as a trophy might very well find themselves with an urge to protect the nest of the creature, even if the creature had no nest. Furthermore, it is apparently possible to 'train' a Skull Spider to give a different set of instructions--indeed, one of the Eirian individuals the team observed had been forcefully put under the control of the Lord through use of a Silver Skull Spider. This alone makes the species incredibly dangerous in the hands of a determined or cunning individual; with the addition of the Golden Mask of Skull Spiders being able to somehow direct them, it is plausible that they were artificially created by some unknown force for just that specific purpose. Thankfully, the summoned warriors were able to remove the Golden Mask from the claws of the Lord, rendering them mere pests.
  7. Tribes of Okoto A Comparative Analysis of the Physiological and Cultural Distinctions Between Six Island Tribes ---------------------------------- An introductory Overview The island of Okoto is host to a number of unique species, including at least one extant sophant race and possible a number of others. It is, however, this singular race that is to be the focus of this research document, as most future contact with the world is expected to happen with them. The villagers of Okoto, who call themselves Morehu, were at one point in their history part of an island-wide empire of great wealth and mystical power. However, due to the mishandling of an artifact and the resultant tragedy, most modern Morehu live in scattered tribes on the island. These tribes are affiliated with the region of the island in which they live; the Jungle Tribes live in the Jungle Region, the Stone Tribes live in the Stone Region, and so on. Morehu are carbon-based reptomammals with metallic compounds throuough their body, most notably in their bone structure. They have an average height of 4.5 feet, exhibiting a basic bipedal dual armed body plan with a singular head and no extended spine. Their hands have five digits, one of which is opposable; while this is also true of their feet, two of their digits have fused into a large “middle toe” and the opposable digit is usually used for balance. The smaller scales on a Morehu’s hands, feet, head, and chest usually appear silver, but as they grow larger on the limbs and main body they take a more blackish hue. The musculature of their barrel forms a distinct synthetic abdomen appearance, with a circular pattern over their heart and piston-like veins running from their ribs to their pelvis; almost all Morehu wear chest armor that mimcs and exaggerates these natural qualities. Morehu faces can best be described as a strong-jawed, hollow cheeked scowl with their eyes exhibiting refractive qualities and ranging from ice-blue to pale yellow in color. Their diet, while technically omnivorous, appears to be mostly plant based with the occasional lucky kill thrown in. This is largely out of necessity rather than preference, as the infrastructure for supporting different diets has collapsed with the empire. While they do have a noselike bone, the nostrils are rather simple; a combination of scent organs and taste buds can be found on complicated structures located on their cheeks. The hearing organs of the Morehu are drumlike enclosed ears, located just under a pair of “port” organs that allow limited telepathic contact. Most Morehu will consistently wear masks to protect these “ports” from access, and a number of masks actually incorporate a level of telepathically controlled mystical power. While the above is true of all Morehu populations, the varied regions of Okoto have resulted in minor divergences, both culturally and physiologically. The following sections are designed to elucidate on these differences, and furthermore examine the reasons they exist. ((The above is the first part of a seven part series, based on close observation of the Protector models.))
  8. Hello everyone, I think about this topic a lot so I figured I would present it to you: We all know that through human history certain breakthroughs in technology are made that allow for the creation of more advanced machines and such. Beyond the canonical storyline, what breakthroughs do you think were made by the Matoran/Agori/any other species? And what point in advancement is spherus magna in? I saw a tumblr post about a mechsuit for krana appose to a bohrok body, and I thought that would be pretty cool. There is also the typical gun/laser gun thing, but have those already been invented in the bionicle/MU universe? Tell me what you think!
  9. As per the norm, human style. So essentially, I realized after two months of seeing the Earth Protector, I realized he has a gatling gun/mini gun for a TORSO. That sounds amazing! Like, the guy is a total beast with something like that. So, couldn't help but draw this, where the Earth Protector begins to fend off the spiders while Onua claims his mask, shocked at the unbelievable ((but amazingly awesome)) reveal of the Protector's machine gun chest. The joke itself is a Reference to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, as a popular meme from it is "GERMAN SCIENCE IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD!", and how a character in the show, Strohiem, is rebuilt as a cyborg and obtains a machine gun for a torso and fires it at the main villain.
  10. Has anyone else been watching this? It's the modern reboot of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage series. It's hosted and narrated by astrophysicist and pop-sci superstar Neil deGrasse Tyson, and while much of it is focused on the history side of science and explained in ways the average person could understand, it's still pretty cool. Even for Science Channel nerds like me. (Also in the latest episode Cary Elwes did the voice of Halley and Hooke, so there's that.) Anyway it's on Fox at 9pm on Sundays, so you should watch it.
  11. So I was kind of bored today, and suddenly, this crazy idea about the science of the Protodermis Molecule popped into my head. Then I realized it actually made a lot of sense! So I spent a few hours “pondering the Great Thoughts” and little by little formed the basis for my now extensive theory. This theory is trying to explain the possible science and various characteristics of the extraordinarily advanced Protodermis Molecule and many things about the Matoran Universe. Please remember that what you are about to read is entirely based on theories and evidence, not canon facts. Also, I will probably be adding to this theory as I think of more things. The Protodermis Molecule: Components: -Dynamic Protodermis Molecule Programming -Programmed Non Dynamic Characteristics and Instruction Sets -Connections | Mental Link -Scripts -Systems -Sub-Systems -Programs -Sub-Program Systems -Program Scripts -System Scripts -Energy | Charged Protodermis Molecules A molecule containing an advanced computer, likely of the quantum type. The Protodermis Molecule groups together with a massive amount of other Protodermis molecules to form complex systems comparable to computer programs. Each Program represents a different material or element in the Matoran Universe. The Protodermis molecule’s programming is dynamic. The dynamic programming is able to be altered by outside variables, which allows for true randomness and natural occurrences in the MU, as well as deviation from the rules and instructions of the Great Beings. This is what allows for free will and thought of all MU beings. Destiny can be evaded as well because of the ability of Protodermis molecules to deviate from the GB’s programming. Materials such as Protosteel have relatively simple programming in comparison to systems such as the Power System. The programming is basically a set of characteristics and instructions that define different materials. The high level programming of the material is fed into the dynamic system created by the union of the Protodermis molecules by a Script to form the different materials such as Protosteel. The programming of the materials reacts to changes and variables such as heat and stress in real time, and is sent to the dynamic system by a Script in order to make the corresponding changes to the material. (i.e. extreme heat will cause metal to melt.) Certain Programs can work in conjunction with each other to form systems. The brain of MU inhabitants is an example of one of these Systems. The Protodermis molecules of different Programs merge to create the System, which in the case of the MU brain is likely a chemical computer, though this cannot be confirmed nor denied since it is unknown if the brain of a MU being is organic, bio-mechanical, or completely mechanical. It is widely assumed that MU brains are mostly if not entirely organic, however. This also further explains the bodies of MU beings. The Brain System is able to form a mental link with the body through the Central Nervous System, and so it is able to recognize and detect nearly every Protodermis molecule in the body, forming the basis for sensory perception and bodily awareness. This also makes teleportation of the entire body possible as long as the body is not disintegrated or shattered. The Red Star uses this trait to teleport beings to and from it. Beings in the MU that possess power of any kind are able to control their powers through their Power Energy Reserve and their brain’s mental link. The brain sends both a signal and energy to the either external Protodermis molecules or Protodermis molecules in the Power Channel Exits. (Usually located in hands.) Protodermis molecules must be charged by the Energy Reserve of the user to, which is transported by the Mental Link. Powers cannot be used without the ability to charge the Protodermis molecules with the user’s energy reserve. There are various different types of power, but we will be focusing on Toa Power here. The specific powers are hard coded in to the Brain System of the Toa, and can be of the Control, Multiply, or Reaction categories, forming the basis for all Elemental powers in the MU universe. The mental link from the brain system is able to interact with a specified Program / Element, and either control or multiply that element as per the users thoughts, or produce reactions that create the basis for both real and pseudo Elements. Light is an example of a combination of a Reactionary, Multiplied, and Controlled, and therefore pseudo Element. Pseudo elements do not exist as Programs in the MU. Elemental Light is in fact very different from the general definition of light. The Protodermis molecule is capable of producing reactions that create elemental light that can then be multiplied and controlled to manifest into different Light based abilities such as lasers and light objects. Light’s sister element, Shadow, is also a pseudo element and functions in much the same way as Light. The Light based abilities of the Mask of Light (one of the few Elemental Kanohi) such as resolving conflicts are sub powers of Elemental Light and are control based abilities; they function by altering the Brain System of other beings in a minor and temporary way. When Elemental Power is exhausted, a Toa will have to wait to draw more energy in from the surroundings to fill the energy reserves. This is done on a subconscious and automatic level by a Script. A Script is a Program within another Program or System that runs in the background, providing fundamental subconscious and automatic functions. The users thoughts are translated into code in real time by the system and fed to the CNS and Mental Link stream by a Script.. When the user first uses his/her powers, no code has been generated yet, and it takes a while for the code to get into a normal, consistent, and quick flow, therefore creating a learning curve. After a while, the user is easily able to control the amount of power used and is able to apply it very quickly. Advanced users of powers will also be able to subconsciously generate additional sets of code to use sub-elemental abilities. This learning curve applies to mask powers as well, but in a different way.
  12. I'm starting this topic in honor of the new ad guidelines. Hooray! Why does this make sense? Mostly because I want to be able to link to things that aren't on lego.com, and now I can. Global warming. Well, first, to address an inevitable concern: Global warming/climate change is not an inherently political issue. It shouldn't be, and thanks to the "no politics" rule on these forums, it won't be. This topic is not for politically charged debate on whose partisan or faction policies are best for our energy future, or anything like that. Rather, I think we should intelligently discuss what scientific reports tell us is actually happening to our climate, and reasoned solutions. Disagreement can and should occur, but I really don't want this to degenerate into "politics" any more than the mods do. Keep in mind that global warming is a basic reality of the modern world, and it is something we should discuss because it is here and fundamentally affecting the way life on Earth functions. Saying this topic won't be about politics doesn't mean it won't be about solutions. It means the opposite. Politics, generally, is what keeps good solutions to climate change from being pursued, and I look forward to discussing this topic rationally and frankly. Making this topic not about politics also doesn't mean the solutions can't be dramatic or unorthodox. Global warming is an unorthodox problem that deserves unorthodox answers. I personally would welcome any posts along the lines of "Here's something new about the severity of global warming that we didn't realize," or "We could take these measures to fight carbon pollution," or "look at this new solar development" etc. The main rule we should follow is this: base your comments in science, not politics. This doesn't mean that every comment should be strictly about science, but it does mean we should be working off of verifiable, factual claims, not rhetorical pseudoscience, which makes up an unfortunately large portion of debate concerning climate change. And please, do not debate whether climate change is real. This is not a scientific debate worth having. It is inherently political, and that's why we should avoid it. If you have any doubt, look here, and then I hope we can move forward with a healthy, apolitical discussion. ---------------------------------------- I want to open this up and see what others have to say, so I'll just leave a few things worth sharing.1. This infographic explains a lot about what's going to happen as a result of global warming in the coming decades. http://infobeautiful3.s3.amazonaws.com/2013/01/1276_gigatons_CO2.png 2. So does this one, from the World Bank. http://www.worldbank.org/content/dam/Worldbank/Feature%20Story/SDN/climate-change-africa-asia-1250x7500.jpg 3. My personal opinion is that we need to curb fossil fuel burning as quickly as possible if society is going to be able to manage long-term. That means rapidly depleting investments in fossil fuels and reinvesting our research and funding into renewable energy.4. I also think we should be, as individuals, focusing on cutting ourselves off from central grids when possible; urban gardening and rooftop solar power generation are two ways to do that. In doing so we can save money and reduce carbon pollution!I look forward to other thoughts.

  14. I missed this so much... a topic to discuss science in all of its forms. May it be Physics, biology or chemistry. ^^I'll just start this here by asking a simple question: now what exactly is gravity? I man, at first I was told that every mass has gravity, okay. But then I learned that masses 'bend' space, and this causes the effect we call 'gravity'.And now, I am confused. Does anyone have an explanation for this? (Probably the solution is very simple, and I just can't see it... and maybe the question should be 'What is matter", but that's an entirely different story...)
  15. As many of us have seen in promotional material for Breakout, Jawblade's individual plot is to find pure oxidium, "a highly reactive rust substance," in the seas of his homeworld, the water planet Scylla (which is, of course, a sea monster from The Odyssey; Hero Factory likes to use Greek names for planets). He intends to defeat Hero Factory with it by rusting its metal heroes into helpless statues, which is definitely an interesting way of accomplishing things. (But you have to admit Jawblade is not your typical villain. Armshark has arms.)I'm not a chemist or scientist of any sort, so I'd like to ask the BZPers that do express an interest in that: is it plausible that such a substance as oxidium, which immediately rusts any metal it contacts, could even exist? What's the science behind rust, and how might a mineral be able to invoke that to be used as a weapon?
  16. Today, I'm going to do a one-off feature - my "Premier" Membership runs out on the 28th, and I'm undecided on the matter of actually buying it when that happens. The purpose of this Tech Highlight is to point out the very real possibility of practical electric vehicles. The Tesla Roadster takes approx. 3.5 hours to charge, and, on a full charge, can go for about 245 miles - not too shabby, considering that other electric cars can take about 20 hours to charge and still don't go as far as the Tesla Roadster, but it still sounds pretty bad for a long trip - driving halfway there and then having to stop for 3.5 hours doesn't sound very good. But, when you consider that they've been able to get solar panels to achieve about 21% efficiency in commercial applications, it's easy to see how a solar cell on top of the car could help prevent the battery from ever quite falling to zero, getting rid of the annoying stop in the middle of a trip - and possibly accelerating charging when you are stopped. If you want to make things just that little bit better - or throw in a supplementary system for conditions where you don't exactly have the optimal amount of sunlight - then a small wind turbine powered by the wind flowing over the car just might be ideal. Now, of course, neither of these supplementary systems are efficient enough to power a car on their own, but they don't have to - the core of the power system will be the energy you get from the power grid, which hopefully has something like a nuclear power plant instead of a coal-fired power plant at the center of it all. The solar cell and wind turbine are there to extend the life of the main battery. This concept, I think, is what the future of high-tech energy systems will look like - a central, reliable system supplemented by things designed to make it all work just a little bit better.
  17. You heard it right -- Pluto is, for the time being, no longer considered a planet. Instead, it has become part of a new group of astronomical objects known as Dwarf Planets. The full story can be found here. Needless to say, the dissenters are a many. I'm not necessarily for or against either ruling on the matter of our little icy friend, however. Its all just semantics in my opinion. Nonetheless, you have to wonder. They totally ruined the good old acronym "My Very Energetic Mother Just Served Us Nine Pies." What will the mother be serving now, International Astronomical Union? Noodles? I think not. You're on notice.[/colbert] Usage of Leet- the same rules that apply to text also apply to images. Image removed. -Tufi Edit: Sorry, Tufi. I had thought the leet I used was commonplace enough to be acceptable. Still, I see where you're coming from. My apologies.
  18. This is one of my favorite things I've seen on the Net. Taken from Wikipedia: Although this isn't all that cutting edge (the prototype was made in 2003), I still can't get over how freakishly cool this technology is. Despite not being all that complex of an idea, it obviously has an incredible allure to it. Yes, it's real. The full collection of videos can be found here.
