Hapori Tohu
Yes, you read that right: LEGO Star Wars is getting constructible action figures this year. Visitors of the LEGO booth at Toy Fair Nuremberg were allowed to see the LEGO Star Wars 2015 line-up but not to take pictures, so text reports are all we've got but they coincide in that we will get six constraction sets of LEGO Star Wars characters, namely Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Jango or Boba Fett (there are conflicting statements on this), Commander Cody, Obi-Wan from The Clone Wars and General Grievous. With the release of LEGO Star Wars VII later this year, I can see these selling like hot cakes. Here's hoping those without a helmet will look less jarring than the Joker figure from 2012... Zeb
Looks like Lego finally got the license for Star Wars action figures. I'm guessing that Disney has managed to convince Hasbro that Lego Action Figures are exempt from the licensing issues because they're still building toys or something. Or maybe Lego & Hasbro are now sharing the license. Whatever the case, I'm looking forward to these. Good to know that Bionicle won't be the only Constraction theme this year. Aanchir
I think complaints about the face of the Joker figure from 2012 are a bit silly. His face looked twisted and unsettling because it's SUPPOSED to look twisted and unsettling. That's his schtick. So if we get a character like say, Darth Maul, then they might have a similar gaunt and wild-eyed look, if not the Joker's trademark maniacal grin. Conversely, a character like Luke Skywalker will probably look a lot less crazy. Anyway, this is cool and definitely a great brand fit. I'm impressed that the LEGO Group is able to do this, since it seems like the kind of thing guaranteed to have Hasbro breathing down their necks for violating their exclusive Star Wars action figure license. But evidently LEGO is confident in their ability to convince people that the sets are more "building toy" than "action figure" and are thus within the terms of their own Star Wars license. 4 Quote Latest MOC: PAIGE (Prototype Artificial Intelligence, Gynoid Expression)
admiraltyphoon
Well this was totally unexpected. But I still don't understand why people compare this with the 2012 Joker Ultrabuild.I have a feeling that Luke Skywalker and Obi wan's heads will be remolds of the GL ultrabuild. xccj
I remember a Cuusoo projects for this back in the day, but it got killed cause of licensing issues. Cool to see that this now may actually happen. Of course, it is a shame that standard stormtroopers aren't included; those would make for great constraction figures. Clones just won't cut it. If these prove successful, then I can only imagine we'll see further figures in future years. Stormtroopers, Battle Droids, even alien characters like Wookiees—there's a lot of potential for CCBS-based Star Wars figures. Come to think of it, who knows if it'll remain limited to figures? I just got the image of a CCBS Scout Trooper on a Technic-based Speeder Bike in my head—a set like THAT would be epic! Toa Zaz
Wow, super excited. This was actually an idea proposed on Cuusoo a long time ago, but I think the reason that it didn't happen was that at that time only Hasbro could make Star Wars figures (that's why they stopped doing the magnets, figures had to come with a vehicle etc). This has the potential to be really amazing and cool, and I'm glad that they are making them now rather than earlier when the CCBS system had fewer parts and was less creative build-wise. Perhaps next year they'll make figures based off Star wars: The Force Awakens or the spin-off (apparently there were Episode VII lego sets at Toy Fair but were only shown to industry representatives behind closed doors). Concerns:This has such potential, Lego better not screw it up. It also stands that if they do mess up, we might not get another attempt.Price concerns. The Ultrabuild sets (and recent constraction figures in general, and for that matter Lego sets as a whole) have been really and overly expensive. The first wave of Superheroes sets was licensed at least, so that provides a little justification, and at least the Superhero and 2013 Chima sets were filled-out enough to somewhat justify the steep prices. But many of the 2014 Chima sets were disappointingly spare for their high prices (Vardy and Fluminox especially), and those sets aren't even licensed. Especially considering the general unreasonable price-hikes of a lot of the recent Star Wars sets like the Wookiee Gunship, I can't imagine how insanely high-priced the already-expensive ultrabuild line will be when they adopt the really-overpriced Star Wars theme. They won't possibly do more than $20 per standard-sized figure, right? I wouldn't buy them for any more than that. The Superhero theme had a ton of potential and was kind of squandered- they only did a few sets that weren't great, mostly standard Hero Factory-esque builds with weird heads (I agree, the faces ought to be better for the non-helmeted new sets. I didn't hate it for that first Superhero line, but for Star Wars or any future sets it really needs to improve. The improved sculpts for the Chima heads, and eve better for the two-piece Fangar and Panthar. are promising signs). Don't get me wrong, they were cool, but not great, so kind of a wasted opportunity. Part of it was likely that they relied on existing pieces with mechanical textures, etc that didn't necessarily suit these characters, but some of it was the designs; Batman could have been so much better. The Chima sets were significantly better (Sir Fangar is really cool, thanks BZPower), but still suffered form a lot of the same problems; the Hero Factory-esque parts didn't always suit them (not that I want these to have a lot of overly-specialized pieces. CCBS is good for being so versatile, but the same shells over and over can get a little tiresome). Hopefully through creative builds, etc, Lego will go all-out for their most popular theme and make them really amazing. This theme will be so lucrative that it would make sense for Lego to invest a great deal in in. If that's the case, and that may explain what I think is a truly abysmal summer wave for Bionicle. Vorahk1Panrahk2
I'm having nervous flashbacks to those old Marvel constraction figures, but there's been three years of parts development and constraction set design that will hopefully yield some nicer products. They had cool functions, looked like the characters they were supposed to represent, and some of them came with nice parts (lots of metallic blue on the super battle droid!). And despite being built out of technic, the human characters were convincing as humans instead of robots. Although given most of those technic characters either were robots or had inorganic armor that part probably wasn't too difficult. dotcom
The prices are the only things that really concern me about this...but I'm sure the pieces will be amazing. And it's generally great news. I was getting a bit worried about the future of constraction since we only knew of 18 constraction sets for 2015, which is the lowest number of since the days before Bionicle. And it was the first year since 2011 without a secondary constraction theme. But this puts all that to rest. Definitely looking forward to these. Munty
I'm apparently in the minority here (as usual!) as I don't see this being a particularly good idea... I think Lego is great and I think Star Wars is great. I also happen to think Lego star wars is excellent. Action figures and constraction figures are not the same thing at all imo though and especially if these are going to be CCBS I think they'll look REALLY wierd. Wasn't there a knockoff stormtrooper constraction set a while ago? If I remember correctl, the helmet was the only good looking part of the set. I think Lego Star Wars is brilliant because although it simplifies the source material somewhat it does so in a successful long established way. Constraction figures work in the same way but to a vreater extent and with many holes, gaps and glaring inconsistencies when compared to living things. That's why it's only been successfully used in robotic lines so far. I know there are fans of the Chima figs out there but they're a bit off right?... Imagining something as iconic as Star Wars depicted in such an inflexible and somewuat niche medium is rather unsettling. I'd say 'I hope TLG do it well' but I'm just not really sure there's a good way to do it without a whole new system or at least a buttload of new parts! J46 Nui
Cool. I'm looking forward to most of these, but not particularly Obi-Wan or Luke.
