  1. Fishers, I would argue that what TMD is suggesting isn't that a work of fiction has to be both true and false. A story does not have to be true in its details, its accidental aspects if you will, but rather needs to be true in its themes and spirit, its essential aspects (again, if you will). The Lord of the Rings is not a true story, but what it has to say about hope is. So, false in accidentals, true in essentials.

And, if you were to argue it, I would agree with this opinion. My point is that TMD, if he did have it, did not express it clearly.

  2. I'm going to respectfully disagree with this blog entry. My primary point of disagreement here is how the word "truth" is used. Because truth is what is - or, in this case, what was.

Also, you mention that all fiction is a lie a couple paragraphs up, but then you say we need it to be true at the bottom. That is confusing, since lies and truth are opposites, and an apparent contradiction:

Fiction is inherently a lie. There’s no such thing as hobbits, magic rings, or Mount Doom. We don’t have superheroes, and we don’t have spaceships.

We don't need a factual blow by blow for a story to bury itself into our heart, we just need it to be true.

While I agree with you that the theme and spirit of a story are more important than the facts they convey - at least in terms of a stage production, which this article is about. You can call that theme (I just did) or message, and that may indeed be true, but you cannot use that criterion to declare that entire work true, because it is indeed a lie. It's fiction.

I think this is what you may have been trying to say, but your wording here does not make it clear.

  3.

"good" is pretty vague and subjective. what kind of stuff do you generally like?

Oh you know, good stuff. Like the kind that's good? The one that's not bad.

    XP

I like P!nk, Sara Bareilles, Bonnie Tyler, musicals, etc.

My definition of "good" is pretty much anything that's not Glee or Rap. =P

@SPIRIT: We are no longer friends. >=/

Have you tried Sara Bareilles' new album yet? It's called Songs from Waitress and it's a musical, so you should totally dig it.

Also might try the Wiz if you haven't seen it already. (Wizard of Oz thing).

Not sure what else. You might want to try Shayna Leigh's "Drive" (the song, not the album) and...
