You know, I think it might be fun to have an occasional "Blindfolded-Potluck" (for want of a better term) Mafia game, where the particular roles, twists, and mechanics are recycled from previous games, with no particular thematic logic or story logic, and kept secret until they come into play. Perhaps it could even have strange remixes of concepts, such as Personality Crisis with By the Numbers (in which certain players switch numbers,) etc.
 

This could help to ease the strain of constant innovation for Mafia hosts.

What you call "constant innovation" I call "a lot of the time just gimmicks".

 

And I would definitely count XIX in the latter at the moment. XVIII doesn't really fit either since it just re-used a concept in its exact form.

 

Also the Numbers concept is so friggin' complex to deal with as a host can we not think about players swapping roles AND numbers in the same game oh god i'm gonna go cry now ok ;__;

Maybe the roles would be tied to the numbers themselves though.

Even gimmicks require some innovation to produce. For better or for worse, BZPower Mafia is (or so it seems to a newcomer like me) becoming more experimental. I like experiments, but I also think it would be nice to sit back and not have to worry about producing or grasping a new concept, every once in a while.

It's definitely becoming more experimental, I'll agree with that.

I think it depends on which twists and concepts we're reusing; while some might be fine with the stuff they introduce being used by others, there are certain concepts of mine as a host that I'd rather stay with me, unless I happen to give someone else permission to use them. The By the Numbers concept is chief among those; conversely, I don't care if people use stuff like the Pyro. We can always use more Pyro.

Simple Mafia games are always fun.

Of course, XX isn't going to be exactly "simple" (nor incredibly confusing), but it won't be as complex as some games, or have roles as complex as some games.

It's less complex than Two For All was, and that makes me happy.

Now that I think about it, the By the Numbers thing is really all that I'd want people to ask me about I think? I'm probably forgetting about something, but I feel like most gimmicks and innovations that have come from me are either things I'm fine with others using, didn't work at all, are things that nobody is really interested in re-purposing, or simply can't be done again (like the idea of the Darkest Days Trilogy).

Every single time we lynch someone in Mafia, it turns out they've been lynched in real life because BZPower is now haunted by the ghost of BIONICLE Generation One (because I said so).

 

(When and if we do go through with this you just know Taka's always going to be innocent if suspected and guilty if not suspected and that people will lynch Shadowhawk/ShadowVezon et cetera because they have shadow in their names and that means they're evil, apparently)

TBH the main reason I wrote this story was because if I ever actually host a By the Numbers 3 it won't be for a long, loooooong time, and by that point I'll want it to have a self-contained story instead of continuing the story from By the Numbers 2. And this story idea just wouldn't leave my head, so yeah.

And you would be correct.

 

If someone is going to host, and then not bother finishing the game while remaining active as a player, I don't want them to host another game until the first has been finished. And if the next game isn't completed either... well, I don't expect we'll get to that point.
