  4. Hey all you MOCers!

You should send some cool MOCs to BFAL2014! We had a good turn-out last year, and I think we're already on track to surpass our numbers from last year! That's awesome.

Keep building things and don't forget to send them in! PM me for my address. :D

[send your mocs to BFAL emoji]

  5. wow look i'm returning to bzpower for a hot second to see what's up after x years away! i am super unique in this aspect! look how subversive and cool i am!

in all seriousness thought i'd come back here for a hot second and say hey. was never super active in the community but had a lot of good memories from here, and this site actually taught me some about interacting with people. i'm super grateful for both of those things, and i'd like to say that things in my life are good, not great but good, and i've got a lot to be thankful for.

bionicle was an important part in my life, still got a guy sitting on my desk in my apartment (my apartment, back in the day those two words together wouldn't even make sense), and i owe bzp a decent bit. maybe i'll haunt this blog a little more often, we'll see

  6. I don't know? This freakin' website and it's freakin' inability to keep me away from it.

Okay, yeah, actually it's been doing a fair job of keeping me away from it, since it's been what, like, a year? Several years? I don't even know anymore.

    So, howsabout those Bionicles?

  7. And for once something I did is related to LEGO:

  9. There's a word people love to throw around when it comes to MOCs, artwork, and sets. But not just any examples, oh no. It only really pops up when the subjects are female.

You don't get to be surprised that's what this blog entry in this blog is about.

I've seen some great female MOCs get posted in BBC. Streamlined yet well-armoured, minus the woefully out-of-place ponytail, and in footwear you can actually fight in. I often regret not publically recognizing them as they come up for just plain getting it. Something always comes up and before I know it, I've lost the chance. And believe me, it is regret. It is a deep regret that I never manage to post in these topics and applaud the builders. I can't tell you how much I regret not offering a voice counter to what's heard instead.

These MOCs are great, you see. Maybe some general technical and/or aesthetic qualms, but you'd be hard-pressed to find any MOC without them. But that's rarely the problem. Instead, I see people talk about how these MOCs are 'great, but not very feminine'. These MOCs, with silhouettes and lines of movement that have captured je ne sais quoi in a jar and put it on a shelf. These MOCs, already a step ahead of the general crowd. These MOCs, that for once, are actually feminine.

And then it dawns on me like a smoggy sunrise.

These MOCs also tend to avoid the trend of putting two things on her chest just 'cause girls have two things on their chests. And believe me, they're things. They're not breasts. They bear no resemblance. Sometimes they're round? But that and the numbers are the only resemblances. They stick out terribly. Did I ever mention in this or any other entry that they always stick out? There is no room for anything less than a D-cup in Bionicle, it seems. Even that's on the small end of things.

And then, the MOCs with spine-shattering chest tumours are the ones deemed 'feminine'. Really. Never mind that they could have shoulders that'd be out of place on Onua. Never mind that they could have the hips of an especially elfin 10-year-old Matoran boy. Never mind they could have all the grace of a herd of half-tranquilized gorillas. I guarantee you, the vast majority of posts in topics like these will praise the 'femininity' of the featured MOC.

So near as I can tell, according to the Bionicle fandom at large, 'femininity' isn't a set of subtle qualities that work together to convey a general aesthetic sense. To be 'feminine', all you need is huge round things on your chest. That is the definition I have determined from countless posts and topics. That's the definition that seems to be on the books.

That is an absolutely terrible definition.

Pick 5 bands / artists that you love before reading the following questions:

    1. fun.
    2. The National
    3. The Airborne Toxic Event
    4. The Hold Steady
    5. Bright Eyes

What was the first song you ever heard by 1?

"Walking the Dog". I still remember the day my best friend showed it to me..like..vividly. =P I had no idea that I had just been introduced to an artist that was gonna have such a huge impact on my life..it's weird, thinking back on it, that fun. wasn't ALWAYS a part of my life.

Is there a song by 2 that makes you sad?

Hah..it's The National! All of them. =) "Runaway" once made me cry.."Mr. November".."Slow Show".."Baby, We'll be Fine".."Lucky You"..

What is your favorite song of 3?

Hah..basically all of them except "Neda". =P I guess I'd have to say my absolute favourite is and will always be "Wishing Well"..I was so blown away when I heard that song. It's hard to say that I like any Airborne song more than another, though...

What is your favorite song of 5?

Either "Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh" or "First Day of My Life". They're both pretty equal to me..

What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?

Oh my God..I can't really describe the impact fun.'s had on my life. I happened to be introduced to them right before a period of ups and downs, lost friends, a crush on a certain girl I couldn't be with (but am with anyway)..fun. was there through all of that, making things better, whether things were good or bad. We drove six hours from North Carolina to Macon, Georgia to see them in concert. Words cannot describe the love I have for this band.

What are your favorite lyrics of 5?

"Besides, maybe this time it's different - I mean, I really think you like me."

How many times have you seen 4 live?

I'd love to see The Hold Steady live..but I'm still waiting for a concert in the area. =P

What is your favorite song by 2?

Oh, god. I would try to make a condensed list, but even that would come out to over thirty songs, I'm sure. I guess I'll just say "Slow Show", because I think I listen to it most frequently. Not that that's that much more frequently than the others. xD

Is there any song by 4 that makes you sad?

"First Night". Less because of the lyrics, and more because I fell in love with "Separation Sunday" and its characters: Charlemagne, Holly, Gideon, and the narrator. Hearing Craig sing about them like this - not partying, not being born again, not hopping from Stillwater to Ybor City, not doing hoodrat things - there's something incredibly sad about hearing how these characters self-destructed.

What is your favorite song by 1?

    I can't answer that. It's fun.

When did you first get into 2?

Hah - I saw "Alligator" as a similar items listing on iTunes. I clicked it, read a really pretentious interview from some guy, and then listened to "All the Wine". I remember being unimpressed, leaving the page, and forgetting all about it. Later, I read about a favourable review for "Boxer" somewhere and decided to give them another shot. I immediately fell in love with "Fake Empire", and the rest of the album not long after. It was awhile before I got into their other records, but once I did, The National became one of my biggest musical influences. Since then, I've always been careful to never judge a band based on one song or one review. =P

how did you get into 3?

I'd been listening to "Wishing Well" for a week or so. I was staying up late one night. I happened to be sad, and I wanted to hear more songs like "Wishing Well", so I started the rest of the album. Needless to say, I was incredibly disappointed when I heard these upbeat indie-rock songs (it took awhile before I realised how dismal they really are lyrically). However, I came back to the album awhile later and slowly listened through the whole thing over the course of a few days. It just sort of grew on me and became a favourite record, and not long after that, a favourite band.

What is your favorite song by 4?

I guess I'd have to say "Your Little Hoodrat Friend". Though "How a Resurrection Really Feels", "First Night", and "Cattle and the Creeping Things" all might as well be tied, too.

  12. Remember the old days when we had rules about the combined file size of avatars and sig banners? What was it, 150kb max?

    Man, I miss those days.

Hey, all y'all. Bet practically nobody here even remembers or knows me at this point. But, for those of you old codgers that do and have possibly wondered what I've been up to lately, here's the sitch.

First and probably the biggest, in the time since I was last around I've moved on from having jobs to finally landing a career. No longer do I spend my days washing dishes or flipping burgers. I am now the Product Support Manager for a company specializing in candidate sourcing and a jobs search/data engine. I spend my days managing a team of programmers including a rotating internship wherein I can help other up-and-coming developers learn some of the ins and outs of the industry. It is very stressful but very rewarding work and while I'm definitely not yet being paid as much as I "should" be, I love my job and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Outside of the job, I'm living it up as a bachelor in my own digs. Rather than sink money into nothing, I skipped the whole "apartment phase" and jumped feet-first into the world of home ownership. It's been a wild ride and I'm learning new things all the time. My neighbors are pretty swell and I'm actually surprised that none of them have really voiced any complaints about the state of my yard/lawn that I've definitely not been keeping up with (it's been a crazy year between the promotion and grandparents). Also, I didn't know this when I bought the place, but I have six frickin' fruit trees: 1 apple, 1 cherry, 2 plum, and 2 that I'm not sure if they're weird-looking apples or weird-looking pears.

Recreationally, I'm still loving my time as part of the TTV Channel. It's been a wild roller-coaster ride with all kinds of ups and downs, but we've done some great stuff (go watch Biocraft Chronicles if you haven't yet) and I've definitely made life-long friends. I also continue to play too much Warframe but I'm trying to get back into the swing of playing my ocarina too. I'm still very novice in terms of skill, but my goal is to be able to play the Ducktales theme before 2020 rolls around.

    A'ight, that's me. Peace.

  13. Has anybody been to a Lego convention in LA? Bricks LA was the top Google result.

I always enjoyed looking at pics of displays from conventions around the world. I never attended one, though. I think it might be fun to swing by Bricks LA this January. I live within driving distance of the venue. Any advice or tips from experienced convention attendees?

  14. A bit of brainstorming has led to some realizations about Matoran, and they may end up as playable in BIONICLE Fighter after all. They don't have powers, and that is what has been the biggest challenge in balancing them. Still, it also means there are fewer custom powers needed for them, which would save on their development time. Here is what they might have instead of a full elemental power selection:

    - Matoran will carry the passive elemental traits of their Toa counterparts. Ta-Matoran get fire resistance, Onu-Matoran are a bit stronger while grounded, and so on.

    - Slightly higher base move speed coupled with a slightly smaller hitbox compared to other species. They can still be hit easily, but running away should be easier. Due to their small size, certain melee weapons are scaled down for Matoran, and they receive slightly more knockback force but are quicker to get back on their feet.

    - Matoran have no Kanohi power. This button will instead be used to activate their special ability. Kanohi they spawn with will not have powers at all. The new engine will distinguish a bit clearer between powered and unpowered masks, by having powered masks not fade out so much when dropped. Alternately, Matoran masks will not fade or change color at all, as per canon.

    - Power 1 and Power 2 can be used to switch between extra items carried. Matoran can choose to carry extra weapons, lightstones, and similar objects, some depending on their chosen job/special ability.

Abilities available to Matoran (chosen from a list like any other power would be):

    Worker

    matoran_crafting.png

Workers (and most Matoran types) can choose to carry extra weapons, backup Kanohi, and/or lightstones. 2 slots are available for this. Press Power 1 or Power 2 to pull these items out in-game depending on the slot used. This expends a small amount of energy: 5 points. Matoran don't use energy for all that many things, so this will seldom be an issue, but rapid switching of items can wear out your energy supply.

Special power: Repair. Can repair held items by pressing the Kanohi/special power button. Every currently equipped item (armor, mask, shield and weapons) is repaired by a certain amount decided by the Matoran's number of points in the generic "Power Plus" perk. This is the same perk that controls the strength of Toa elements, for the record, and is thus the Matoran equivalent. Unlike the power of the Kanohi Kiril, using this ability to repair forces you to walk slowly while doing a short animation. The Absorb key can be held to do a much slower, gradual repair that does not cost any energy to perform but still impairs your mobility.

Repair amount: 30% of the weapon's HP per use. 10% per rank in Power Plus, for a maximum of 50% and a minimum of 10%.

Energy cost: 20 points per use.

Use time: It takes 2 seconds to perform repairs, then another 2 seconds before the ability can be used again.

    Unique perks:

Skilled crafter - 1 rank. After repairs are done, your items take less damage when attacked for a short period of time. This does not affect the damage/knockback resistance offered by shields, only the speed at which they wear out.

Re-craft item - 1 rank. Extra ability. While using your Absorb repair ability, press the key for one of your items and you can exchange it for another item of the same type. This expends energy like a normal repair would. A sword will become a different sword, a laser gun will become a different laser gun, and so on. This ability completely repairs the item in the process, but the item you create can not be controlled.

Improve gear - 1 rank. Extra Ability. After using your repair ability, your weapons deal extra damage for the next few attacks and your defensive items can withstand a bit more damage. Visually the items will have a faint shine to them. This perk increases the repair energy cost to 30 and the cooldown between each use of your repair ability to 10 seconds. Items lose their improvements if dropped.

Quick fingers - 1 rank. Improved ability. Increases your repair speed to 1 second and reduces the cooldown of your repair skill by 25% (to 1.5s or 7.5s, depending on other perks).

    Guard

    matoran_guard.png

Guards are used to defending against Rahi attacks, which nullifies the knockback penalty normal Matoran have. Guards can also carry 2 extra items, one each in the Power 1 and Power 2 slots.

Special power: Call Squad. Summons two randomized Matoran NPCs to appear at your location. One will carry a basic melee weapon, while the other will have a basic projectile weapon. These Matoran each have 50% of your current health at the time of calling. The summoned Matoran will gradually lose HP while summoned and do not block attacks. If reduced to 0 HP they will flee and vanish immediately. This happens after at most 60 seconds, less if attacked. They do not drop any items when defeated.

Points put into Power Plus will increase the health of the called Matoran by 15% of your max health per point. Maximum is therefore 80% of your max health, minimum 20%. The duration of their stay does not change, but their resistance to attacks will naturally be greater.

Press the power key again to dismiss your followers prematurely, reducing the ability's cooldown by an amount proportional to the time that was left.

    Unique perks:

Steadfast backup - 1 rank. Summoned Matoran stay longer. Does not affect the damage they recieve from enemies.

Strength in numbers - 2 ranks. Each rank adds another summoned Matoran.

Power hungry - 1 rank. Summoned Matoran appear with special powers in their weapons, such as Fire Swords or Cordak Blasters.

    Rahi Tamer

    yep.png

Like all Matoran, Rahi Tamers may also carry up to 2 extra items in their empty Power slots.

Special power: Rahi Follower. A Rahi spawns alongside the Matoran. The Rahi provides special features such as having an auto-attack and serving as a mount. Pressing the power button causes the Rahi to follow the Matoran, while pressing the button again will cause it to attack whatever enemy is closest in the direction the Matoran is looking. By keeping the button held down, a targeting reticule appears which can be used to direct the Rahi to a specific target.

The Rahi that will spawn is chosen at the character selection screen. Rahi have max health equal to their Tamer's max health, and slowly recharges health after a few seconds of not being attacked at a rate proportional to their Tamer's current health. If defeated, the Rahi will retreat and vanish. It appears automatically again a minute later (or the next time the Matoran respawns). If the Tamer dies the Rahi will flee and vanish just a few seconds later.

Press E while standing next to the Rahi to mount it (if possible). While mounted, the power button causes the Rahi to use its standard attack. If the Matoran or the Rahi recieves damage/force that would normally knock them prone, the rider will be forced to dismount. Both melee weapons and projectiles can be used by the Matoran while mounted, but this increases the chance of being knocked off by an enemy attack. Using projectile weapons will also make it harder to steer.

If your Rahi is at less than 50% health and is hit by enough force, it may be knocked down or stunned. At this point, an enemy is able to mount it. They will have a much harder time steering it than you, however, and the Rahi will still be unable to cause damage to its owner. After a certain amount of time, your Rahi will shake the enemy off and return to you. If you have died in the meantime, the Rahi will instead vanish once the "horse thief" dismounts.

The Power Plus perk will increase your Rahi's toughness by giving it a few points worth of armor as well as increased damage per rank of the perk.

    Rahi:

rahi_nuirama.pngNui-Rama - Provides flight, medium speed. Easy to control in the air. Attacks by flying close to enemies and attacking with weak claws. If the Matoran presses the Absorb button while flying, they can pick up a target for a few seconds. This slows your flight speed based on the weight of the target. Press the button again (or just wait) to drop the unfortunate victim.

rahi_gukko.pngGukko - Provides flight, quick and steady. Harder to turn around. Attacks by ramming into enemies while flying, which may knock them around.

rahi_muaka.pngMuaka / Kane-Ra - Large and powerful. Moves somewhat slowly, but can extend their neck to bite enemies outside of normal melee range. They are hard to knock around, but are pretty much unable to jump.

rahi_tarakava.pngTarakava - Medium size and speed, with a powerful double-punch attack. The first punch deals decent damage, while the second one also knocks the target away.

rahi_husi.pngHusi - Very quick and lightweight, but has next to no attack power.

rahi_ussal.pngUssal Crab - Moves at medium speed and has medium attack power. Extra resistant to knockback force, but can barely jump.

rahi_nuijaga.pngNui-Jaga - Moves at medium-slow speed and has medium attack power. Stinger attacks at close range will cause weak poisoning in addition to their normal damage. At long range, the scorpion may also toss a small glob of poison which does less damage but still poisons. If ridden, the Nui-Jaga can not use its stinger as a melee attack.

rahi_fikou.pngFikou - Swift movement speed, weak attack power with mild poison effect. Can not be ridden.

rahi_visorak.pngVisorak - Medium movement speed, has a dash attack with medium knockback force. Can jump and climb walls. Wall climbs disable your use of weapons, since you need to hang on tight.

    Unique perks:

Come Home - 1 rank. Improved ability. When you call for your Rahi, it will immediately appear at your side regardless of the distance between you. This ability has a cooldown of 5 seconds. If you call your Rahi again during the cooldown it will respond as it normally would, but move a bit faster.

Dramatic Dismount - 1 rank. Extra ability. Whenever you dismount, you do so gracefully. Being knocked off your Rahi will no longer stun you, and if you're lucky you might even be able to land back in the saddle.

Loyalty - 1 rank. Extra ability. Enemies that attempt to mount your Rahi will find themselves shaken off immediately.

War Beast - 1 rank. Ability Modifier. Whenever your Rahi takes damage, it becomes slightly faster and more powerful until it next starts regenerating health. This perk increases the delay before your Rahi's natural health regeneration kicks in and also causes its health to regenerate slower.

Feel free to suggest other Matoran types.

Just popping in to say hi. Guess no one cares anymore. Times have changed so fast.

Also, I am in a need of a moderator/admin help for an artist friend of mine, named Evil_Accret. She's got some sweet art to post, but she forgot the pw to her account. Sadly in her attempt to reset, the account is linked to an old e-mail, in which she forgot the pw and the question required to change said pw.

And the BZP system is not so willing to give her a second account since she shares the same computer with another BZPer.

If anyone is willing to help return her account, send a PM my way for further discussions.

    Thanks.

So, I liked X-Men Apocalypse. Haven't had more than a few hours for it to sink in yet, but, you know, so far so good.

I like how the main villain's early actions make it understandable how someone could choose to follow him without personally desiring the end of the world. I mean... nuclear disarmament? Good start, buddy!

    But

    What if

What if there were a story where some mighty immortal, trapped under rocks for literally thousands of years, woke up, got to see the world

And had an overall positive reaction at first? Like,

They saw cars, and were impressed with the speed at which a machine, unaided by any beasts of burden, could move

And they saw trains, and got excited about trains, because trains are exciting

And then planes. Wow, planes. Planes! If I were that old, and had been asleep that long, planes would blow my mind.

And then someone tells them that smallpox isn't a thing anymore, and oh my good golly gumdrops, smallpox isn't a thing anymore! Again, coming from that far back in history, I'd be blown away.

So they're impressed by that, and by the scale on which people live now (because Cairo ca. 1984 is much, much bigger than Cairo back when there were still working out the issues in pyramid-building), and at first this mighty, immortal ruler, this ancient world-ruler, is just walking around, taking in the sights, and they're thinking, y'know, this is good. I like what you've done with the place. A+ work, kids.

And where they go from there kind of depends on the tone you want to set. Do they remain impressed? Do they decide that humanity, while it has progressed, still needs them at the helm for some reason? Do they see something, some darker side to this advancement, that convinces them that they need to do something big to change things?

Can't really get into that last one without discussing what it is that would convince them that the world needs re-making, and I'm not in the mood to make it something ridiculous like Adam Sandler movies (though, to be fair, "burn the world" is a perfectly understandable reaction to Adam Sandler's financial success), so... yeah. Fun thing to think about.

  18. Here's a situation.

"You have 24 hours to live. What do you do?"

Pretty common situation. If you have 24 hours to live, what would you do?

For me, I'd probably call my loved ones and tell them what they mean to me. I'd write some sort of story about my life and I'd organize some of my stories, concepts and ideas into files with instructions on how to expand on them. I'd probably write some sort of will as well.

    What about you?

If you have 24 hours to live, what would you do?
