  1. "I miss doing bonkle art," says the girl who just recently finished an AMAZING painting of a human Kiina. which you should totally post in General Art — it really needs the activity!

So excited for you getting a Cintiq! I hope it serves you well in your artistic endeavors!

And oh, you're planning on going to BrickFair Alabama? Hmm, I wonder if I should go. I was on the fence but if you're going that's as good an incentive as any to register...

  2. Do you not get a lot of new people in CoT? I wouldn't know because I only follow like two or three topics there. Guess the people joining BZPower lately are mostly in it for the LEGO discussion. Makes sense, I guess, since these days there are plenty of other sites for discussing other things.

  3. The U.S. price is actually just $59.99. Though I guess the store you bought it at might've had it marked up.

$60 for a LEGO set is not really unusual, and for a 623-piece set it's a very good value for money. Most big LEGO castles and pirate ships over the years have been at least $100. Black Seas Barracuda, one of the most beloved LEGO pirate ships of all time, cost $110 way back in 1989, which would be like $213 today! Also, this year's LEGO City Square set is aimed at ages 6–12 (considerably younger than the Doctor Who set's 10+ age range) and that costs $180.

So yeah, LEGO has always been an expensive toy, and when we start to realize this as adults I think it's important to thank our parents for being so generous when we were kids!

  4. Thank you so much for creating this. There is not nearly as much musical expression in the LEGO or Bionicle communities as I'd like there to be. And this is perhaps the best fan-made Bionicle music I've ever heard! The percussion really helps it to fit the Bionicle universe, I think, helping it to sound mechanical but also exotic. All in all you did a phenomenal job.

I really look forward to hearing what you come up with for the rest of the regions! And I hope you have plans to make these tracks available for download eventually — I'd gladly buy an album of fan-created Bionicle music like this!

  5. pineapple=good

    pizza=bad because tomato

You can get pizza with sauces other than tomato sauce, you know! White pizzas are often made with a garlic cream sauce. Or there are pizzas made with pesto sauce (basically just olive oil and a bunch of herbs). Pizza is a very versatile food, all things considered (says the guy who almost never eats pizza with toppings other than cheese, lol).

  6. Mata Nui Online Game II was definitely a mixed bag. It introduced some great cultural world-building by exploring the careers held by the Matoran of different villages, the principles each of the villages lived by, and how those principles related to individual Kolhii skills and to the identities of the six Rahkshi Makuta chose to attack Mata Nui. At the same time, as you say, it was less immersive, and it also introduced lots of extremely tedious and repetitive gameplay mechanics such as harvesting raw materials, crafting and trading items, Kolhii matches, and grinding for Kolhii skills.

Plus, it was incredibly glitchy and didn't tell nearly such a compelling story as the first, which thrust you into dangerous situations and even let you meet the Toa at several points in your adventure. While I have a great respect for slice-of-life and coming-of-age stories, Mata Nui Online Game II felt largely incidental to the overall Bionicle storyline, rather than helping you feel like you were in the middle of it.

  7. That Bionicle drawing is incredible! Am I correct in thinking that's the Protector of Fire? Without color or the exaggeratedly muscular physique of the set it's tough to tell, so I'm mostly judging by the shoulder cannon and the creative flame patterns you added to the mask and shoulders. But it's an awesome drawing.

I'd love to see more Bionicle drawings in this style! It manages to feel unique and imaginative, yet still very authentic. It sort of reminds me of the work of some of the best artists I remember from back when I first joined BZPower in 2006, like Lady Kopaka and Nikira, yet still with an identity that is all your own. :)

Not to discount the quality of your other drawings. I personally relate better to fan art of series I follow than to art of less familiar characters. But that elf character also looks intense, and your self portrait is packed with energy and personality!

Great to hear that you're drawing again and having fun doing it! I'll keep your advice in mind and maybe try to get into a daily drawing regimen. I've managed to create a number of MOCs lately and recently finished inking a drawing I did back in August, but otherwise I haven't been exercising my creative muscles nearly as much as I should be.

  8. My family's sound pretty similar to yours, though our Mask of Earth is transparent to the sides of the eye holes as well as above them, and a little bit of the space above the eye holes but below/between the forehead vents is gold.

All in all, I'd say they're all pretty much evenly balanced between gold and transparent except for the Mask of Jungle.

  9. 1. Depends how they work. If you angle them down and they produce enough exhaust, they're basically just a stylized jetpack. :P Or you could say they work as an enhanced version of the scientifically dubious "heat the air beneath me to slow my fall" principle Tahu used in comic issue #3 back in 2001. It's a fantasy world so there's no limit to the excuses you could come up with, but in the end they're powered by Rule of Cool.

    2. I'll answer your question with my own question: how large must antlers be to be considered "giant" antlers? Antlers that are so big you can't support their weight are obviously not practical, but plenty of animals with big antlers seem to manage alright.

    3. You can find them *commercial voice* ON LEGO DOT COM SLASH BIONICLE askaparent'spermissionbeforegoingonline.

    4. They ultimately both evolved from the Slizers.

    5. Inheritance.

  10. Palace Cinema is nice, but a lot of people in the AFOL community tend to consider it one of the worse modular buildings. The interior furnishing is fairly bland, it's only two floors, and the car is nothing too exceptional. I'd sooner recommend the Pet Shop, Parisian Restaurant, or Detective's Office.

Of course, people aren't sure which will be the next to retire, which is another consideration. Pet Shop is oldest of those currently available.

  11. The scary thing is how many of these complaints I've seen from people being completely serious. I've seen quite a few comments about Bionicle "ripping off" Ninjago by using skeletons as enemies or calling its characters "Master of *insert element here*". Neither Ninjago nor Bionicle invented those concepts. I mean when you get right down to it, LEGO Castle had a skeleton army before either Ninjago OR Bionicle! And both themes consciously took inspiration from other media that preceded them in many, many other ways.

  12. This is a good song. I don't listen to it as often as I should.

I'm also orange, but a different type of orange. Though to be honest, I never paid all that much attention to the colors, and when people mention them I often have to think for a bit before I'm even sure what they're talking about.

  13. I remember earlier this year when the LEGO Elves special aired, people were worried that theme was getting a lot more material than Bionicle. But with this year's material stitched together, there's not anywhere near as great a difference. We've gotten a good 24 minutes of story even without the credits and recaps, and over 30 minutes if you count everything including the character videos.

Next year's Netflix series seems like it'll be taking the theme even further. One report I've read suggests the new Netflix series will have 30-minute episodes, so that'd mean two hours of content — even more than we got in 2009! And that's assuming we only get one season for the whole year.

  14. But he has used that before to explain other canon contradictions before. (The example that pops to mind is Avak saying the Brotherhood gave him his powers in one book, then another book shows that he had no relation to them at all. The canon reason: he was lying in the first book.)

Actually, Greg was lying in that answer. The Avaks in the two books are two different Avaks and they were both telling the truth. There are in fact hundreds of different Avaks who swap places during every scene change. The other characters don't acknowledge this because it's just a normal thing that happens in their world that they take for granted. Some Avaks got their powers from the Brotherhood. Some Avaks got their powers from Princess Unikitty. Some Avaks got their powers from a radioactive spider. Some Avaks don't even have powers and just have to hope they don't show up in a scene where they need to use them.

If we assume Greg lies (and not just gets things wrong that he later has to contradict/retcon), then this theory can never be disproved. That's exactly the problem with theories that assume the storyteller is lying about the story — which are completely different than theories that assume a CHARACTER is lying.

  15. Not sure what you're referring to parts of the Star Wars EU that are still canon. As far as I know, the six movies and The Clone Wars are the only pre-2014 Star Wars media that are still considered canon, and none of those things were ever considered "expanded universe" in the first place. George Lucas had considerable involvement in creating the Clone Wars movie and TV series.

Any new Star Wars media going forward could conceivably borrow elements from stuff that is now considered non-canon, with Disney's approval of course. But that's not the same as saying that media is back to being canon, any more than G2 Bionicle borrowing names and concepts from G1 makes the stories those names and concepts came from canon to G2.
