I think that if you do a really powerful attack, you have like a 75% chance to hit the target, and if you miss, you get screwed over and it completely backfires. It would be a risk-reward system, and would likely decrease the amount of OP abilities used.

The problem with that is not only do you end up putting numbers on everything, but then someone has to tell you whether or not your attack worked or backfired every time.

I prefer free form, with plenty of common sense.

I think that would be ridiculously hard to regulate. Just play it the way everything else in this forum is played: fairly. If someone throws a powerful attack your way and there's no way you can block it or dodge it, just take it like a man. Don't overcomplicate things.

But what if the character is a woman? Can't really take it like a man, then. :P

You know what I hate?

It's when people purposely ignore the message of something they're told and instead make jokes (wait, they aren't jokes: jokes are funny) about a small portion of the subject that is completely irrelevant to the point they're trying to make.

Back on topic: the whole percentage thing isn't going to work very well. Just do what the RPGs here, in Lego, and in OTC are doing. Freeform, but fair.

Do you hate the act of making the joke or hate the person making the joke? Also, people have different personalities, and that's mine. Ignoring the subject and making a dumb joke about a small section of it. That's how I am, and if you've got a problem with that, nothin' I can do.

I think it's more the joke itself. It was in poor taste.

This topic is for serious suggestions and constructive criticism. We offered that, and you chose to ignore it and make a pointless joke.

It doesn't reflect very well on you.

My mind automatically puts words and sentences in things that I write, despite them not being there. Usually people that know me understand that I am acknowledging them, despite not making it obvious. If I make a bad joke about something without mentioning the actual subject, that means that I acknowledge what you are saying but am too stubborn to admit it.

Heyyy so

Blade, Tex and I spent a few hours working on Infinite revisions, and I'm liking where it's going; I'd say the changes are better than the original draft! Looking forward to hearing your feedback on it.

Looking forward to the new version. Like I said before, I'll do a proper review of it when it comes out.

BIONIFIGHT INFINITE: TAKE 2

gallery_96949_76_36547.jpg

INTRODUCTION

Hello there! Welcome to Bionifight!

Ah, Bionifight. Some of you will know what that word means - whether through word of mouth or via your own experiences. Some of you must wonder what exactly I am jibbering on about in this little letter. Or perhaps you are wondering why you were snatched out of your universe and reappeared inside a containment cube.

Or was it a tube? I can never remember.

So! Bionifight - it is a legendary tournament that has been hosted many times over the past several thousand years. My team and I gather those we deem to be some of the greatest fighters from a variety of universes, plunk you all down in an arena together, and have you battle each other for weeks. At the end, the winner usually earns both eternal bragging rights and whatever mysterious treasure we discover at the location.

In the past, we have summoned a wide variety of species - everything from Matoran to Muaka to Skakdi… I do believe we even had a mutated Takea Shark once. Recently, however, we have noticed an unfortunate trend where our most powerful fighters tend to win more easily than the weakest ones. The whole idea behind Bionifight was that a Matoran could theoretically take on a Makuta and beat them.

So! While we think over our plans and figure out how we shall balance things properly in the future… we have decided to stick to our usual limits… which is to say that there are none. But please, do take care not to commit suicide through stupidity.

Once more, I say welcome! I dare say that I shall speak to most of you eventually. Take care to speak with the Queen, as she hates to be ignored - and do also take care not to do anything that might make a conversation with our Enforcer necessary.

Until the first round begins,

-The Host

---

Welcome to Bionifight - you have been selected for the latest iteration of a tournament that has been running for thousands of years… well, “selected” puts it lightly. You have all been ripped out of your lives without consent, signed up for this tournament against your will. For some of you, this is the first time that it has ever happened. For others… not so much.

For some of you, winning the tournament might become your top priority - after all, surely victory would end the tournament and allow for all of you to be sent home, back to your old lives?

For others, you might have no interest in winning the tournament. You would not even compete if you were not forced to - what you are interested in is everything else. Why are you here? Where is here? There must be another way back home, or some way that you can escape the facility.

For others still, you may want the best of both worlds. After all, who is to say that you cannot win the tournament and escape at the same time?

CYCLE/STRUCTURE EXPLANATION

Rounds shall operate on a flexible time structure; whenever a new round of battle is announced, players will have 24 hours to prepare themselves before being instantly teleported into the arena. Rounds will then last until the first Saturday after the initial announcement, unless otherwise stated. All times are NA EST.

When there is not a fighting round occurring, players are free to explore the facilities or do whatever they wish until the next announcement occurs.

As a tournament, there are also points to be earned in Bionifight; winning a round will gain a fighter three points, while surviving the arena for an entire round without being knocked out shall net a fighter only one point. For every ten points that a fighter receives, they shall receive a special reward from the Host or the Queen.

INFINITY GEMS

The location of every Bionifight tournament is determined based on whether there are any legendary or powerful objects in the area.

The location of this tournament was selected due to the mysterious “Infinity Gems” that are hidden within the tunnels stretching away from the facility; nobody exactly knows where or how to find them - or what obstacles one might face. Rumor has it that the Organizers have a few in their possession already.

From the few scripts in the library on the subject that have been translated into modern tongue, it is believed that there are eight Infinity Gems more powerful than any of the others; unfortunately, the translated scripts offer no hints as to what powers these Gems might bestow upon the user.

There are also whispers of something else - something more powerful than the Infinity Gems. However, the Organizers have found nothing substantial to prove the existence of such a thing… which is not to say that the search has stopped by any means.

THE BIONIFIGHT FACILITY

Where is the Bionifight tournament held? Where is the facility located? That’s a good question, once that you shall have to answer for yourselves. All the Organizers have shared is that the entire facility is located underground.

The main portion of the facility is rather enigmatic. What is known is that it has four entrances into the rather rectangular arena, one on each wall. Between the arena and the rest of the facility, there are expansive locker rooms, including medical areas, and emergency resting areas.

Directly above the arena, there is a small circular control room, where the Enforcer monitors the entire facility. Typically, they only focus on the arena; however, when needed, the Enforcer can know what is happening in the rest of the facility. The location of the offices of the Host and the Queen seem to change within the blink of an eye. Their offices can only be found if their occupants want them to be found.

There are is a single hallway that loops around the outside of the arena, connecting the whole facility together. There are four stairways up to the upper floor equally spaced in gaps between the four locker rooms. Tunnels also appear intermittently, much like the offices of the Host and Queen, spread out across the hallway. According to the Host and the Queen, it might be in these tunnels that one might locate the mystical Infinity Gems.

On the upper floor, there are a total of four sectors which surround the control room. Of these four, there are only two which spectators can enter, with a hallway surrounding the sectors like on the main floor. The north sector is known as the ‘Relaxation Sector’ and is where the players go to get sleep, interact, or relax in other ways. The west sector is known as the ‘Knowledge Sector’, and acts as a library of information on previous tournaments and battles. To the east, there is the ‘Gym Sector’, where the fighters can spar or train to prepare for the future fights. Finally, in the south, there is the ‘Shopping Sector’, which is first and foremost a food court; however, it has concession stands scattered all around it, where merchandise related to the tournament is sold by different vendors.

There are a total of four large doors in each sector; one to the hallway, two to the adjacent sectors, and one to the control room. However, the control room’s doors are seemingly perpetually locked, and the doors to the Relaxation and Gym sectors will only react to the players themselves.

There is hope to be a map ASAP.

THE ARENA

The arena has several possible configurations available for each round, not including its default state.

1 - Great Furnace: Based upon an expansive industrial smeltery from another dimension, the Great Furnace is a treacherous combat zone rife with jets of fire, streams of molten metal, and the occasional angry telepathic plant monster.

2 - Mount Ihu: Based upon a frigid mountain at the center of an otherwise tropical island, Mount Ihu is the antithesis of the Great Furnace. Blinding storms of snow and hail are frequent; wild Rahi and slippery slopes also pose a threat.

3 - Mahri-Nui: Based upon an underwater city contained within a giant bubble, Mahri-Nui is an ordinary city battleground… although if a fighter manages to destroy the bubble, the flood of water that follows will immediately eliminate half of the players from the round.

4 - Pirate Ship: Based upon a pirate ship at sea - go figure. The ship provides the only solid ground to battle upon, and predators lurk in the seas surrounding the ship.

5 - Temple of Time: Based upon the most sacred place on a mystical island, the Temple of Time holds new challenges and threats each time it is used, making it the most unpredictable of the arena variants.

GAMETYPES

There are currently four different game types available for the Bionifight tournament.

1 - Free For All: This is the standard brawl; every fighter is pitted against the others, and the last one standing at the end of the round wins. If more than one fighter is still in the arena at the end of the round, the one with the most knockouts shall be announced as the victor.

2 - Team Battle: This game type functions similarly to Free For All, except that the fighters are divided into even teams. An MVP shall be selected from the winning team.

3 - Tag Team: Each fighter is paired with another to work alongside for the round. The final tag team standing wins; if more than one tag team is still in the arena at the end of the round, the tag team with the most knockouts shall be announced as the victors.

4 - Horde Mode: The fighters must battle against an endless horde of mindless drones operated by the Host and the Queen. The drones will all have a specific power set determined at the start of the round. The fighter still standing at the end of the round that destroys the most drones shall win.

PROFILE

To join the RPG, fill out a profile for your character and have one of the staff (Voltex, Blade, or Chro) approve it. We are currently limiting players to an absolute maximum of two characters each, due to the nature of the game. We are not necessarily approving all canon elements or powers… but we’re also not going to limit you to them either.

Power/Weapon 2: [Another power or weapon/tool]

Power/Weapon 3: [Another power or weapon/tool]

Appearance: [What does your character look like?]

Bio: [Your character’s history; who are they? What did they do with their life before Bionifight?]

Personality/Other: [Gender? Is there any other information that is useful to know?]

THE BIONIFIGHT ORGANIZERS (STAFF CHARACTERS)

Member Name: Chro

Character Name: The Host

Power/Weapon 1: Teleportation of himself and others.

Power/Weapon 2: Telekinesis, including levitation by telekinetically lifting himself.

Power/Weapon 3: Mimicry. The Host can copy one other power at any point; in order to copy a new power, he must lose the old one.

Appearance: Physically imposing, standing above most fighters at seven feet tall, the Host is clad in regal red and gold over black. He wears a dark decorative cloak, with a hood that hides his face, but does not muffle his booming voice.

Bio: The Host is one of the final survivors of an ancient race, destroyed mysteriously eons ago. Alongside the Queen, he travelled through several universes, until at some point the pair created Bionifight. The Host decided to work as the face of the organization.

Personality/Other: The Host is externally jovial and grandiose, with a kind and accessible personality. Sometimes he strolls through the common areas outside the arena interacting warmly with the fighters. Working as the figurehead of a fighting tournament, this happiness is clearly a facade, but not one that the Host has ever let slip in the vicinity of a fighter. The Host has a deep appreciation for forks.

Member Name: Voltex

Character Name: The Queen

Power/Weapon 1: A golden trident that can be summoned back to the user.

Power/Weapon 2: Elemental Control over Psionics

Power/Weapon 3: Accuracy - this power is always active at a low level, giving the Queen slightly better accuracy than most beings; however, when focused upon, it becomes impossible for her to miss her target.

Appearance: Like the Host, the Queen stands seven feet tall. Her armor is a mixture of light blue and gold, with silver and gunmetal accents. She carries a lightweight golden trident, and her armor often shimmers, giving her the appearance of being underwater.

Bio: Along with the Host, the Queen is one of the only two surviving members of her species, of which every other member was killed in an unknown incident thousands of years ago. The Queen travelled through several universes alongside the Host, eventually creating the Bionifight tournaments.

Personality/Other: The Queen often seems either cold or withdrawn, although she has been known to be both calm and welcoming to fighters who treat her respectfully. On occasion, she has also been known to help fighters break the rules without being caught by the Host.

Member Name: Blade

Character Name: The Enforcer

Power/Weapon 1: The Enforcer has a sword that can shift into a bow mechanically. The bow’s string is stored within the hilt when not in use. The middle of the blade has a hole on either side, which is used in Bow mode to feed the string through. After conversion, the blades are covered by metal up until the hole, so that the wielder can’t accidentally cut themselves.

Power/Weapon 2: Power Cancellation

Power/Weapon 3: Power of Flight

Appearance: The Enforcer has a gold coloured mask that seems to change every time they appear. They have forest green armour, and a icy-white chestplate. Stands seven feet tall like the Host and the Queen, although the Enforcer is a different species. They have an intricately patterned sheath on their back, which they use to hold their sword when it’s not in use.

Bio: They were found during one of the earliest Bionifight tournaments and immediately hired; their power cancellation ability is often used to keep fighters in check.

Personality/Other: Very little is known about the Enforcer, other than their abilities and that they were once a contestant in the tournament.

RULES

1. BZP rules apply, of course

2. No god-modding (avoiding/dodging/countering all attacks, never taking damage, dealing insane hits, etc.)

3. Do not control other player characters without their permission

4. Use the tag “IC” when posting in character, and “OOC” when speaking out of character.

5. Have fun or you shall be fed to Xaeraz.

There you are - if anything seems out of place (like it's from the older version and no longer fits with the revised version), please let me know so that I can fix it :P Anyway, here you all go! What shall we do next, besides getting a map done?

The Mahri Nui description is outdated, Tex. Blade and I got sidetracked by plot planning before I could edit every single map description.

And the MARKS strikethrough thing. Maybe just shorten rule six.

(also the cloak thing seriously

better than skylanders or forks)

I told you - when you showed up we got sidetracked by plot planning. :P I forgot that I hadn't edited all of them. Then I had to leave my computer (from which I can access the doc) more abruptly than expected. Sorry about that.

Please don't let this brief moment of disorganization damage your opinion of Voltex and co. - I promise, we're competent the rest of the time! But late-night chats during finals week aren't my forte.

Overall, I'm liking this new version a whole lot better. However, there are few things that need addressing...

First up, this:

Rounds will then last until the first Saturday after the initial announcement, unless otherwise stated.

Timezones are going to be an issue here. Saturday for the people organising the game might not be Saturday for all of the players. You might want to come up with a slightly different system here, or perhaps just let the fights play out naturally.

unfortunately, the translated scripts offer no hints as to what powers these Gems might bestow upon the user.

I think we need a little bit more info on these gems. Saying "we have no idea what they do" isn't much of an incentive for players to go looking for them. I'm not saying you need to go into huge in-depth detail as to what they do, but even a few little hints would be good, I think.

 Character’s species or race

Could go a little more in-depth here. Maybe give some indication of what species aren't allowed, or better yet, compose a list of species that are allowed. I would assume, for example, players wouldn't be able to get away with RPing as the Zivon, or a Kanohi Dragon, or something else equally ridiculous.

  Tag team partners share a single health pool of 30 points;

I think this bit's outdated. Might want to fix that.

1 - On timezones: woops, yeah, I'll fix that. Times will be by NA EST, which is my timezone. Players can figure out how that works out for their timezones.

2 - We can expand upon certain gems, but others will be remaining unknown, since a select few will not be obtainable.

3 - I think we can judge that on a case-by-case basis; because even if somebody wants to be a Makuta in this, they'll still only have access to the three weapons/powers that they choose.

4 - Yes, that would indeed have to change haha. I'll fix that now.

EDIT

Added in the timezone notification, and fixed the tag team bit. I'll wait for the gems thing since that'll take a bit more time.

Having read through the last several pages, I'd just like to say that I think you have an interesting idea here in Bionifight, and, should it be approved, I'm looking forward to seeing how you integrate a story into a game where, once a week, all personal exploration must be set aside for a compulsory battle. This has quite a different feel than the usual RPGs played here, which is nice. It's always good to innovate and try things no one's done before.

My one piece of advice would be to stay mindful of your audience. Many people play BRPGs not to fight, but to make introspective posts, interact non-violently with other characters, and simply be free to explore the world and develop their characters in the process. Battles serve the story, not the other way around.

But hey, maybe we've been craving a simple beat-em-up all along, and just didn't know it. Good luck.

Well this isn't a JRPG, there wouldn't be any bonuses.

And among everything, I'd say that those types of things would specifically be out of stock eternally at the food court, to prevent cheating. =P

Thank you. :) Presently, the system we have in place allows for more emphasis to be placed upon the story aspect of the RPG; we'll see whether it goes through another change or not.

Bionifight looks kinda neat, interested to see how story elements are gonna integrate. Might be seeing me pop in if it gets approved and all that jazz.

I'm curious, will more "arenas" and "areas" be unlocked or added as players explore the world?

That's definitely a possibility; new game types would be possible too. It was what we did in previous games in the series to keep the gameplay fresh; that said, I can't say they will for certain, since I have no idea how much the combat might change in the shift from Game to RPG.

A week of fighting, ending on a Saturday. Can't say that's particularly enthusing, but that's due more to personal reasons than "you screwed this thing up"

I guess my big question is, what's your general plan for people being unable to fully participate due to unavoidable real life occurances? Are they allowed to sit out battles for an in story reason if they have, say, a fifty hour work week or brickfair or something? Or do they have to just grin and bear the loss they suffer automatically?

Are they allowed to sit out battles for an in story reason if they have, say, a fifty hour work week or brickfair or something? Or do they have to just grin and bear the loss they suffer automatically?

One option is that a player could allow another to control their character for that time frame. If anyone does not wish to do that, however, then as long as the hosts are given a heads up about any upcoming commitments I'd say missing the battle is fine as long as you aren't RPing outside of the arena for that time period.

Could someone buy some sort of, say, energy drink, from the food court and be granted some sort of bonus in his or her next battle, or is the shopping center just there because why not?

Well this isn't a JRPG, there wouldn't be any bonuses.

And among everything, I'd say that those types of things would specifically be out of stock eternally at the food court, to prevent cheating. =P

So it's there for non-sight based aesthetics?

Alright, view time. Note, this is all written as it was right after you posted and does not take into account any edits or comments that have been made since.

Introduction: Pretty good. Gives me an idea of what is going on. Good grammar and I don't feel bored while reading it.

Recently, however, we have noticed an unfortunate trend where our most powerful fighters tend to win more easily than the weakest ones.

I don't mean to be rude, but whenever I read this I can't help but get a "well, duh" reaction.

Cycles/Structure Information: Pretty basic. I'm still iffy about basing the RPG around real time dates, but its not like I'm running it. If you guys feel that it wont kill the RPg, than go ahead.

Infinity Gems: These sound like they got pulled from some fictional setting or another, but I have no idea which. As such, I have no idea what an Infinity Gem is. Why should I go after them aside from the rather nebulous "They are powerful"?

The Bionifight Facility: Simple enough, a couple parts I had to go over to make sure I read them right, but that might just be me getting tired.

The Arena: I like the change to actual hazards rather then just "heat damage" in the Great Furnace and Mount Ihu. Mahr-Nui still needs to be changed from the health points system.

Gametypes: Not exactly the bounds of imagination, but they are proven game types. I would suggest trying to come up with something unique, if only to stir things up. Also, the Tag Team section needs to be updated.

Profile: I like this version, it feels like an actual profile. One thing though, why have the player write their name at the top? All you have to do is look slightly up and to the left to find out who posted the profile.

The Bionifight Orginizers: I can't help but wonder, are there only three people running this entire thing. If there are how in the multiverse have they managed to not get shanked by angry contestants? Aside from that the profiles feel a bit bare bones and despite the fact that I can tell the gender of the Enforcer is supposed to either be unknown or not there at all, the "they" keeps making me think there is more than one.

Rules: Rather skeletal looking. And I noticed the lack of a "No insta-killing" rule.

Rules: Rather skeletal looking. And I noticed the lack of a "No insta-killing" rule.

Introduction: That bit can actually be edited out, since it's a remnant from the whole "Toa-only" phase.

Cycles: We'll see how this works out; it's one part of the RPG that could be changed while it's running if absolutely necessary.

Infinity Gems: As I mentioned to Nato, we'll expand on the Infinity Gems later (as in as soon as I return home tomorrow :P)

Bionifight Facility: The descriptions could possibly be tidied up a bit more, I imagine.

Arena: Mahri-Nui has been fixed.

Game Types: Tag team fixed as well. More unique game types are certainly possible; I'd have to take some time to figure out exactly how they would work.

Profile: I... don't really have an answer for that question? I feel like we had a reason but I'm not remembering it. Perhaps Blade or Chro remember, and if they don't, then we'll remove that bit.

Organizers: I know Blade wanted the Enforcer to be gender neutral. As far as just the three of them running it... they're skilled and powerful (and that could perhaps be expanded upon in their bios) - plus, I imagine they wouldn't summon any contestants that the three of them together would be unable to defeat if necessary. We have been dabbling with the idea of having spectators; extra staff might fit into that as well (although that could also be implied from the shops, medical bay, etc.)

Rules: I will be seriously disappointed if I have to inform a player that they can't insta-kill people, but I suppose that could be added in (wouldn't that fall under god-modding, though?)

There are probably some things I could've worded better, but if we get even a placeholder map until an official one is made, that might help. xP

That was an oversight Chro pointed out like minutes after the updated version was posted, it was quite hilarious actually, because we were in the middle of fixing that, then got distracted by other things, then just never remembered to fix it until AFTER it was posted.

Honestly, this is one thing I've never truly understood about profile forms, but is consistently, without fail, always in them; I'm guessing it's a holdover from when they were needed, before everyone realized linking to individual posts was a much better idea... But, for the moment, it's actually quite handy so the three of us don't mix up characters(despite that being like almost impossible for at least one character. =P).

The Bionifight Orginizers: I can't help but wonder, are there only three people running this entire thing. The Enforcer is gender neutral.

2. No god-modding (avoiding/dodging/countering all attacks, never taking damage, dealing insane hits, etc.)

Pretty obvious there. =P

I didn't pick up on this earlier; thanks for reminding me. Who or what are the vendors in the shops, what's their part in the whole multiversal contest thing, where are the contestants expected to get money to pay for this stuff, etc.?

Not all the shops are for the contestants; the ones that are, probably will be for free, the ones that aren't, will be for the spectators.

If all of the shops are presumably in the same place, doesn't that imply that the contestants will be mingling with the spectators at some point?

I'd imagine, like it's implied with most RPGs, standard BZPRPG rules apply.

I'd hope that's not a thing. Its fine to take tips from there, but don't go making a clone for a very different setting.

But what when they get ganged up on by the half of the contestant who don't like the idea of being kidnapped and forced to fight for the entertainment of others?

Pretty obvious there. =P

I was actually expecting something more specific, considering there seems to be some actual worry about it. That rule does cover it in a general sense though.

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

I haven't looked at the BZPRPG rules, so I wouldn't know what's similar between their rules and ours. I looked at Corpus Rahkshi and the old Bionifight games and then meddled around a bit to see what fit this RPG in my eyes.

As to your question about the Organizers: that's part of why their offices can only be found if they want to be found; those who wish to harm them cannot do so if they cannot find them.

All the people would have to do is not fight, or cause some disturbance that forces the Organizers to come out.

If this thing gets off the ground, I'd be tempted to try to do that, just to see what happened.

The Enforcer is there and can cancel out the powers of any fighters causing a disturbance - and since this has come up, I shall make sure to add a fail safe to discourage this from occurring.
