-Gen 1 is obviously Squirtle

-Gen 2, likewise, is Totodile

-Gen 3 Treecko, and your indecision here is disappointing

-Gen 4 is indeed Turtwig, and your disdain for Empoleon is righteous

-Gen 5 Doesn't matter because Gen 5 was terrible

-Gen 6 is Froakie because nothing else exists and even Froakie is a disappointment

I recall other people having had this problem, too. I haven't encountered it myself. But if you can remember what exactly you did, or if it happens to you again, please let me know and we'll look into it.
