IC: (Rekhyt)

The toa of magnetism waited. He was waiting for a certain individual, although they didn't know that he was expecting them.

He had heard about the Outsiders a while ago, when the group had first been formed, and had been watching them.

Now he had decided he would join, and had arranged for one of the recruiters to come here and meet him.

While he waited, he wrote a letter to Silo, who had apparently got himself stuck in Onu-Koro prison, the fool.

Then he waited.

IC: Akhulii

Akhulii rushed forward and then tossed himself onto a bed. "Sleep!"

He pushed his luggage onto the floor and began to curl under the sheets.

"I don't know about you Ryzen, but sleep, is at the top of my list of priorities right now! I would recommend getting some shut eye. Tomorrow we have another big day ahead of us!"

IC: Zero

She made her way up to the loading platform. The cable car was diminishing into the soupy horizon. A mixture of snow and steam created a foggy atmosphere on the Ko-Wahi side of the break.

Veteran had arrived, with a Toa of Ice in tow.

"Greetings." she said dully. Almost all of her men had gone out into the cold. Only Veteran and Transient remained, the later probably couped up in his library in an attempt at shutting out the sorrows of life.

"Unfortunately most of our forces have gone to assist in Ko-Koro. Normally there would be more people to volunteer as your opponent, but I guess you'll just have to face Veteran on this day for your trial."

The she-Skakdi beconned them outdoors. Trials were usually held outside, so that there was space to use elemental abilities and other powers without damaging the property. Zero leaned against the outpost wall.

"Don't kill each other. Don't maim each other if you can help it. This is a fight where you have to use your head and subdue your opponent as quickly as possible. Veteran's name was given to him for a reason, so don't expect to win, Toa. I am assessing this merely on how long you can keep your head afloat."

"Take your positions, and wait for my word to begin."

IC: Veteran.

Veteran cracked his knuckles and drew his claymore over his shoulder, feeling the familiar weight, the comfortable grip. This blade had taken lives more times than he dared to count, and saved his own almost as many. He activated the EMP clamp, and crackling blue light danced along the blade.

He shifted into a wary battle stance, ready and waiting for Zero's word to begin.

Veteran didn't move.. except for his eyes, which were focused entirely on Kouyran. And then...

...he lashed out with his impact vision.

IC: Kouyran (Obsidian Outpost)

The burst of impact vision sent Kouyran hurtling across the courtyard, and he quickly created a snowdrift to land in. He thwumped into the snow, leaving only a few bruises on his back, and promptly sent a rack full of axes flying at Veteran, whilst converting the snowdrift into elemental energy and then redirecting it at Veteran in the form of an ice beam.

IC: Veteran.

Veteran recognised the more dangerous of the two threats, and acted accordingly. Using his impact vision once more, he smashed the flying axes aside, and let the ice stream carry hit him and carry him backwards.

He hit the ground and skidded, deliberately rolling in order to break up the ice around his body and free himself, before getting to his feet and firing another impact blast at Kouyran. Not an imaginative strategy, but it would work for now...

OOC: That again? Seriously?

IC: Kouyran (Obsidian Oupost)

Kouyran was smacked by the impact vision again, and instead of repeating his previous strategy of a snowdrift, he tore the blocks out from the courtyard wall and sent them flying towards Veteran, even as he began to melt the snow-covered ice beyond the wall in order to save himself from injury as he flew backwards.

IC: Akhulii

"Good night then old chap."

Akhulii then settled into a deep sleep for a few hours or so. At one point he was disturbed and woke up. Quietly he slipped out of bed and opened up his satchel. Inside he kept the bottle of poison that Syvra had given him wrapped in cloth.

Don't want to wake Ryzen up. He probably sleeps with his eyes open and will wake at the sound of a feather dropping. He pulled off the cloth and then looked at it carefully. He admired the beautiful texture of the liquid which seemed to almost glow in the darkness. He didn't dare open it though. It was too precious. I have to get more of this. It could be potentially very valuable to me and ,my business. But if I want to make more I'll need to find another toa of plant-life. I'll pay him to tell me what went into it and how to make it...

Paralysis was an ability Akhulii had tried to make before, unsuccessfully. It was a crafty one that required very specific ingredients and minerals. He was sure he would find them in Le-Koro, and hopefully a toa of plant life. He imagined that was where they would all be located.

He heard a shuffle, probably Ryzen turning over in bed. He carefully wrapped the small vial back into the cloth. This is potentially a weapon that can make me a lot of money...

He then crawled back into bed and looked around the dark room. It was small, but cozy and made Akhulii feel good. Honestly though, it's nothing like back home. Where's the fresh smell of sea weed? Or the glow fish lamps? The dark walls of lava brick weren't appealing to him. These ta-matoran have no sense of style... Though he did admit that ta-koro had a certain strange beauty about it. It was scary and busy, but also warm to someone who had been living by the cool sea his whole life.

He then thought of Ryzen. The fellow puzzled him a lot; where he came from and why he acted the way he did. He realized he knew precious little about the things Ryzen has gone through. Then again, the fellow is so stiff that he won't let me know anything about him. Sure he has a duty, we all do, but what is keeping him from others? Is it just because he's from Ko-koro? Is he even from Ko-koro? To him, Ryzen seemed like a fair fellow but he didn't understand what he found so unappealing about other people. Sure, Akhulii definitely knew how disturbing others could be, but he felt it was better to live a life with company than without. He had lived alone for many years, being laughed at other for being do strange, but if you don't let others near you, then they will never remember you and you will disappear in history.

He remembered how Syvra had gotten so angry at him for coming and called him a "coward". What was that all about? He imagined Ryzen had done something before that wasn't considered dutiful for a toa. But honestly how bad could it have been? Akhulii's mind couldn't consider. He hadn't seen much of the pure evils on the island. The worst he had been through was Makuta's reign. Though the island prospered, it was terrible to him that such a tyrant could exist.

But he didn't think Ryzen could be that type of toa. Everyone makes mistakes. It's our job to learn from them. Whoever Ryzen is, I'm sure he must have some good in him.

Akhulii had lost his taste for toa though. He didn't like the way that so many ran off seeking adventure rather than protecting the matoran. He had seen plenty of burglaries and crimes in Ga-koro that could've been prevented had a toa cared. Weren't they the most important things? The people that Mata-Nui sent the toa to protect? But even the first toa weren't strong enough and had fallen to corruption. This thought made him sadder. Perhaps in some other universe, there was a world where the first toa didn't fail, where the matoran came first. He hadn't seen much of the toa Maru but hoped they would be better. After all, they had made it through Makuta's lair and somehow managed to defeat him, the master of corruption. Maybe there was still hope for a good future. But that was all he could do, hope.

Akhulii eventually rolled over and crawled back to sleep. It was a little while longer before he fell asleep, for he had much on his mind. Evil can take much away from the matoran, but hope is not something you find; It is something you create. And right before he drifted off to sleep, Akhulii had hope for a better tomorrow.

"Spears, shields, 's boring." Saeva supplied helpfully, her grin returning as she held up a hand; her hand closed into a crimson fist, before she crossed her arms again. "Too quick, too practiced, and way too repetitive. Good old fashioned fist fight, that's fun. A real old brawl. Powers take the fun out of it, too."

"And that's why she didn't join the Guard. Something about "inefficiency"."

Toa Joske

Location: Ta-Koro

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

Loren- Ta-koro- Kohli Stadium

I admit, I was fascinated to watch someone use their power in action.

A fascination coming from someone who can't do it himself.

He nodded at my request, the Toa of Sonics moving past me before settling on the steps outside. Feet set evenly apart, shoulders squared he began with measured breath. After a second or two it became calm and even, almost as if in a meditative trance. I watched as he bowed his head and closed his eyes, cutting off all distractions that he possibly could. Slowly, his hands came up on either side, as if trying to reach for the sky. For a second nothing happened, sitting there as still as a statue until, with a quick and controlled movement the hands came together in front of his chest.

The clap that was produced was unusual... the pitch was completely wrong. Unnaturally high. It took a moment for me to deduce that he was probably actually using that an echolocation effect. Here I thought he was simply going to listen for it but instead...

My thoughts drifted back as he let out a long, slow breath, the grey Toa turning to me, speaking quietly and confirming my hypothesis.

"I'm a combat specialist; echolocation is far from my strong point. Still, it looks like your clear. Nothing flying around the area and if it was on the ground we would have spotted it by now."

I nodded slowly, mulling over those words. I guess there was no way to absolutely confirm its proximity without it actually coming out into the open, but all things considered this was the best I was going to get. Besides, it only made logical sense that it would have left by now, especially after Skyra's blabbermouth. If his job was to find out more about me then it succeeded wildly.

I guess you can't win them all...

Reaching forward I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Thanks, brother, for that small favor. My apologies for dragging you around the Koro but my life is pretty complicated right now. You have correctly guessed my identity, but I am still at a loss for yours... ?"

He looked at me for a second, as if deciding, before nodding. "Loren." he said quietly.

"Appreciated." I looked out into the business district. "Like I said, I do have errands to run, I wasn't lying about that. You are more than welcome to join me if you wish to ask me questions, or if you really feel like reporting me to Angelus that's fine too; I plan on meeting with the guy soon enough anyway." I gave Loren a slight wink. "Him and I go way back. Though now it seems I don't have to hide my presence anymore... I guess Joske's officially back."

With that statement I took in a deep breath of the burning, humid, ashy Ta-Koro air. Good to be back, I thought quietly to myself. Let's see, my shopping list - ah, right.

To the forges!

*   *   *

"You want... what again?"

I gave a silent sigh as I rolled my eyes. "Non-metallic armor. Armor with no metal. Defensive garments that do not include ferrous or otherwise silvery-shiny material. Can you do that?"

The beefy Matoran forger leaned back with his arms crossed, using a toothpick to pick at his teeth. He eyed me warily, as if I was some dangerous individual coming to rob his shop. Or at least a crazy person. I guess I couldn't blame him; I mean this was an unu-

"Unusual request to be sure." he finally said slowly, taking the words out of my thoughts. "Not to mention I'm not sure it would work. Why? What would be the advantages of it?"

This time it my turn to lean back with arms crossed. "I dunno, you tell me; you're the master forger. What WOULD be the advantages of having such a type of armor? Say a layered linen armor?"

It was at this point that I pulled out some paper with a few sketches on it.

His eyes narrowed as he stared it down down, reading and contemplating my notes. He didn't look convinced at first, but slowly his toothpick moved less and less as the blacksmith pieced together my request.

"Well, the obvious advantage is weight. No matter the type of metal this linen armor would be half the weight at worst seeing that it is nothing more than crossing layers of fabric and glue. Even a Kakama-wearing Toa could use this with a half-plate version at full speed and not feel weighed or slowed down. It would also be just as strong... yes," his eyes lit up as he began to see where I was going with this, "the multiple layers would act as an impact-absorption array, displacing blows probably better than metallic armor at a fraction of the weight and cost."

He stroked his chin as I saw smoke coming out of his ears, his mind think furiously. "It could be easily made into sheets and then cut to whatever shape and size you wanted, doing more of an overlapping plate pattern for additional protection, absorption and strength. It would be virtually impenetrable to disks, and therefore easily shrug off any matter of blows from axes, swords, and spears. There would be disadvantages though... " he looked up to me. "I've heard of these 'gun' projectile weapons, and this would do squat to protect you from that."

"My experience tells me that metal armor isn't much better in that regard."

"True." he paused again. "Also any form of heat-based attacks would slice right through it. It could be laminated to help protect against it, but at the core this armor would be flammable." he gave me the once over. "Which for you would either be really bad, or if you're controlled enough, not a problem."

Ta-Toa. Fire. Of course. "That's a risk I'm willing to take considering the advantages this gives me."

"Myesss... " he mused, giving me the hairy eyebrow. "Say, you wouldn't happen to be going up against anyone with Magnetic or Iron powers now, would you?"

A ghost of a smile played on my lips. "Well, let's just say I'm not paying you to speculate on what I plan on doing after you make this." Reaching into my pouch I pulled out a bag of widgets and dropped them on the table... the clanging from the sheer amount of them got his attention, eyes bulging, though to me it made me a little sad. That was the last of my money, the last of my earnings from my time as an athlete; after this I would be officially broke. But if he came through, absolutely worth it.

"I understand the materials are relatively cheap; flax, sailcloth, glue, a good pair of shears, but as for the time... I hope this is enough to cover the cost of that service?"

He picked up the bag, weighing it in his hand. He looked at me seriously. "Been a while since I've pulled an all-nighter, not as young as I used to be... but I think you make a very convincing point." He gave me a toothy grin. "I think I can grant overnight service, but I'll need your measurements."

"Deal." I paused, almost forgetting something. "By the way, how small can you make a Patero launcher? Can it fit inside, say, a gauntlet?"

He looked at me quizzically again. "Possssible," he spoke slowly through teeth, "but it would have no range, not much power, and wouldn't hold much of a cartridge."

"I'm looking for point-blank."

"Then yes, I could. Anything else special?"

I waved a hand nonchalantly. "Oh, well, I could use a new semi-automatic disk-launcher; spring loaded disk magazine possibly?"

"Doable." He raised an eyebrow.

"Volo Lutu Launcher?"

He gave me a grim smile. "You plan on taking on an army or what?"

"Something like that. Hmmmmm, that should be it. Oh, throw in one of those glass lenses that can attach to masks"

He promptly frowned and gave me the "Are you serious?" look. That face disappeared, however, once his gaze settled on that fat bag of cash.

"Fine." His grudging acceptance was not lost on me. "You know, you are one fortunate kid, you know that? I don't usually go to all this extra trouble, even with the extra money."

I laughed cheerfully, keeping the mood light. "Well, you could say I'm just lucky, I guess."

"Indeed... " he eyed me suspiciously before crossing the store and flipping the  OPEN  sign the CLOSED. "Unless you have any other outrageous requests I'll be getting started on your armor. You can pick it up tomorrow, or when it's all dry, whichever comes first. Your measurements... "

"On the paper."

"Yes, right, well, thank you for your business and get outta here! Crazy Toa and their shenanigans... "

He literally pushed me out and slammed the door behind me. I cocked my head, then grinned.

Could have gone worse.

Next stop: library and public records.

IC: Gunner

Yes teacher?

No, no, scratch that, please God scratch that. Forget everything I said. I knew a man named Teacher and I don't want anything to do with him--

I brushed my forehead with my knuckles. Pushed out my breath with one long exhale.

"No need for formality, Mim," I said, a smile still on my face. "Just call me Master Instructor Supreme."

IC: Akhulii

Akhulii stirred and rolled over. He was fairly rested but still felt disturbed about all that thinking he had done that night. The sky out was still dark but that was how ta-koro usually looked. He couldn't tell if it was still morning or night. Deciding he didn't really care, he turned back over and started drifting back to sleep...

Loren- Ta-koro- Kohli Stadium

IC: Loren gave a nod of goodbye as the other Toa left before heading off himself. He appreciated Joske's offer to follow but the Guardsman had heard about the way people that stayed with the now dark red Toa had a tendency to go off on wild adventures. Loren had a duty to the koro to think of first, a duty that got even more important as the island got more dangerous.

A quiet pop filled the air as he teleported back towards the crime scene from earlier.

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

IC: Kouyran (Obsidian Outpost)

OOC: Time to break out my tech...

IC: Veteran.

Veteran stepped forward, hefting his sword two handed, smashing the stone blocks apart as they neared him. In the back of his mind, he knew Zero would probably take the cost of fixing the walls out of Kouyran's future paychecks.

While Kouyran was still recovering his footing from Veteran's last attack, the skakdi stepped forward, swinging his claymore at the air and activating the EMP burst, which sent a rippling crescent-shaped wave of crackling blue energy arcing through the air at Zamor sphere speed - straight towards Kouyran.

Kouyran saw the blast of energy coming at him like a train- well, it would be if he had ever seen a train before- , and, having next to no time to react, he threw up a huge wall of ice in front of him to catch the blast. The electricity hit the wall, and instead of going through it or dissipating, the energy began circling through the ice, conducted by the frozen water. Kouyran saw this, and grinned. He thinned the wall slightly, and began expanding it to encircle Veteran entirely. Using his Matatu in order to save his elemental energy, Kouyran started closing the ring of ice in around Veteran, with the electricity still crackling around inside it.

IC: Veteran.

Veteran calmly placed his hand against the conductive wall of ice, the rubber lining of his gloves protecting him and dispelling the charge. Then, in true Veteran fashion, he used his impact vision to shatter the ice wall, before charging through the flying hail of frost and crystalline ice shards, his still-electrified claymore pointed right at Kouyran's chest.

OOC: Let's end this. Also, I cleared all autohits etc. in here with Nato beforehand.

IC: Kouyran (Obsidian Outpost)

"Karz." With quick thinking, Kouyran focused all of his Matatu's power on Veteran's sword, pouring all of his mental power an will into it. The mental force generated by Kouyran was enough to bring Veteran to a dead stop, and then, when Kouyran saw that the Skakdi had lost all momentum, he ripped the longsword out of Veteran's hands, sending it skidding across the courtyard, and then lifted Veteran up and threw him as far across the courtyard as he could. Kouyran proceeded to create a metre-thick sheet of ice above Veteran, and said:

"One more step, and I drop the ice."

Veteran laughed, shuffling into a crouch. He was small for a skakdi, stocky and stooped. This made him a much smaller target. Without word or warning, he rolled forwards, out of range of the falling ice sheet. Snatching up two of the axes Kouyran had thrown at him earlier, he flung them both at the Toa, firing his impact vision at the same moment.  "Dodge that, mate." he chuckled.

IC: Kouyran (Obsidian Outpost)

Kouyran created another, admittedly fairly thin, wall of ice in front of himself. The axes thudded into it, and the impact vision blew the wall to pieces, destroying his cover, but the wall did shield Kouyran from the brunt of the blast.  He tore the ragged edges of the hole in the wall away with his Matatu, and sent them flying at Veteran. Without pausing to see the result, Kouyran leaped into the air, and brought his axe down towards Veteran's head in a slightly showy, careless manner.

IC: Veteran.

Seeing his attack fail, Veteran paused to reconsider his strategy. With so much ice around, Kouyran had the clear elemental advantage. And his mask let him turn anything nearby into a deadly project-

He heard a crunching noise behind him: Kouyran throwing something else at him with his mask power. At the same time, the Toa leapt into the air, bringing an axe down towards Veteran's head. Several options occurred to Veteran in that moment.

Option 1: He could dodge the rocks by jumping away from them, leaving himself open to an attack from the Toa.

Option 2: Let the rubble hit him, hopefully knocking him out of the way of Kouyran's attack. The problem here was that he couldn't see what was coming at him from behind. It might be too small to push him out of the way, or it may end up doing some serous damage to him. So he went with...

Option 3: Veteran fell flat on his back, letting the rubble sail past him. As he had anticipated, Kouyran continued to come down, not bothering to change his strategy, his axe scything towards Veteran's prone body...

Which was when Veteran's impact vision hit him right in the face, sending him spinning backwards head over heels in midair...
