  1. Uh, what? They are. They're normal sequels. Skyfall is slightly different in style, yes, but I'm not really sure where you're getting that it's a different universe. They're going to have the pry the rights away from Christopher Tolkien first and that's certainly not happening- he hates Jackson's movies. I get where you're coming from, but as you said yourself the only thing that matters to studios is the bottom dollar. But eventually some of these franchises (maybe not all of them) will go away. A historic example is the Charlie Chan film series which fizzled out despite having a film spree that will probably rival Marvel's. Granted I don't know the specifics of why those disappeared- the situations might not be comparable.
  2. I like the limitations placed on element use. It's a nice contrast to the usual combat-based stories which tend to use them offensively. Here it seems more like a relationship, I guess? The Elves can use the elements, but they don't outright control them. Also looking at that background art makes me fall more and more in love with the colors used in this line. Good stuff.
  3. Man this is such a dangerous thing to do. Before you know it you'll end up with a list of movies that's hundreds of titles long and just keeps growing until one day you realize that life is just too short for all those movies. (1001 Movies to See Before You Die was both the best and worst Christmas gift I've ever received.) But I'm going to add to it by mentioning the obligatory The Secret of Kells. It's worth watching for the art style and music alone, but it's narrative is equally moving. Ditto for The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and actually pretty much anything distributed by GKids. I'm also going to mention Lawrence of Arabia because it's the quintessential movie epic. But despite it's massive scale it never ceases to tell the more intimate story of how a man was brought down by his own ego.
  4. I've never played Portal so I don't know what the thing on the left is, but it reminds me way too much of that typing bot from WALL-E. Must be the two black 'fingers' coming out of it.
  5. It's not just the raptor either. For myself, at least, several of the non-minifigure builds leave a lot to be desired, especially that flying monkey. I get that there are piece count and mold restrictions, but I feel like LEGO has put out better small scale models than these. But since kids will be purchasing these for the stands (and probably minifigures) I guess that hardly matters. It's not that there all bad, most are actually quite good, but a few leave me scratching my head.
  6. I actually like all three prequels, but even so I always felt like Episode 1 would have been better of as a sort of 'prologue' movie. Attack of the Clones could become Episode 1, Episode 2 could be devoted to the Clone Wars, and Episode 3 stays the same. That way Anakin's turn to the dark side wouldn't be rushed. As it is we really only get one and a half movies of it. At the same time, though, I do think The Phantom Menace is relevant to Anakin's character since it's where we see him first as an innocent boy before he starts succombing to anger in Ep. 2. It's important we see that side of him because it contrasts with the hot-tempered, irresponsible Anakin in 2 and 3, and it wouldn't be a good 'fall' (and redemption) story if the character didn't have potential for greatness in the first place. It's Ep. 1 where that potential for greatness is emphasized, giving us an explanation for why Anakin was taken on as a Padawan at all, and what the risks where of doing so. It's also necessary for setting up the political story of the Empire's rise to power, but I admit that I'm probably one of the few people who really love the poltical elements of the prequels. They're great for expanding the universe, and give the prequels a unique flavor compared to the original trilogy.
  7. So we're six episodes into season 5. Four of them were centered on cutie marks, two of which involved the CMC. Anyone else feel like the CMC are being set up to recieve their marks this season? Or is it too early to call a trend?
  8. The moral I got out of this episode was that if you can't accomplish your goal... lower your standards for success! ... Though I'm pretty sure that's not what I was supposed to get out of it. But, like, the horse's dream was to do rodeo and he got his cutie mark by doing rodeo. Not by screwing up and making people laugh. It'd be like if Sweetie Belle got her mark for singing but ended up as a stage hand. This episode really confused me. It seems to go against everything the show has been saying about cutie marks.
  9. So... it's a funny term for "MOC"? I think I'll just stick with MOC.

    Fun Fact

I thought it was fun. And that is a fact. Therefore you're wrong. And that is a fun fact.
  11. I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would want to do this... but whatever floats your boat. (Or crashes your starship.)
  12. So does the Toa of Fans control ceiling mounted spinning electrical devices, or hordes of people united by a common interest in a single thing? I mean either way it could be pretty deadly.
  13. I find it fascinating how much people debate the viewing order. Personally, I'm an incredibly simple man (and a very casual Star Wars fan) so I'd go 4-5-6-1-2-3 simply because that's the release order. The prequels can be watched first, but I think stuff from the originals helps give context. I don't say that as a criticism, either. That's just the nature of some prequels. The Hobbit movies are the same way. Also because I kind of like Revenge of the Sith more than Return of the Jedi so for me it's a far more satisfying ending. *dodges rotten fruit*
  14. I would give advice, but the last time I had to go in I basically sat in a room for several hours until I (truthfully) told them I wouldn't be available for the court dates. Then I was dismissed. So yeah... bring a book.
  15. It was actually announced yesterday. Here's hoping there a lot of cool, new, ships for Ep. 7 and that they make it to LEGO form. I don't want another LEGO Millennium Falcon. Or TIE Fighter.
  16. Did you already forget about Snape? He was a Slytherin, and is (so far as I can tell) considered one of the unsung heroes of the whole story, and easily one of the more complex. He's cunning and ambitious, thus fitting the mold perfectly, but also incredibly loyal to Dumbledore and comitted to the cause of eradicating Voldemort. In contrast you have Malfoy who despite his bullying and confident outward appearence is basically a doormat to the forces of his father and the Death Eaters. But I wouldn't call him evil, just easily influenced. And let's not forget about Harry Potter himself who was borderline Slytherin. I think it's even mentioned by someone (Dumbledore, or the Hat maybe) that he would have done equally well in that house. I'd have to go digging for that, though. And then there was Harry's father, who was a Gryffindor, and was basically a bully. Which goes against the Gryffindor code of being brave and chivilrous (or something like that- I don't really remember). So there are at least two characters here who defy the expectations of their houses. So being in Slytherin doesn't inherently make one a bad person, nor does being in Gryffindor inherently make you a good person. The books are fairly limited with their almost exclusive Gryffindor viewpoint, but in spite of that I think Rowling does a decent job with the portrayal of Slytherin house, particularly in the last few books (which is, admittedly, only when these things start to come together). Could she have been more explicit? Sure, but I'm not going to ding her writing for it. And that's as far as I want to go for psych evaluating characters of a children's fantasy series.
  17. I was going to say, that doesn't really look like any incarnation of Quinn that I've ever seen... but I've also never really delved much into the world of comic books beyond what Hollywood gives us. I'm only familiar with her iconic jester costume, which probably wouldn't work very well with the tone that DC seems to be going with. I gotta say, though, that I'm actually kind of looking forward to this. Like, comic book movies aren't really my thing, but I would love to see one with villain protagonists. And judging from that picture there are probably going to be some interesting personalities in this. Also I'm a fan of Will Smith so there's that.
  18. You know, I thought about taking advantage of this (because FREE STUFF!), but then I decided it would take too much gas to drive to the local store. Besides, the only comic books I'd be remotely interested in picking up are the BIONICLE ones, and I seriously doubt any store would be carrying those.
  19. Reviews for Adaline actually seem to skew more toward the positive side of things, though I imagine it's a case of either you're into that kind of thing or you aren't. As for Ford wasting his talent... that's a silly thing to say. Maybe he saw something in the story that made him want to be part of it? If reviews are anything to go by he certainly didn't phone it in.
  20. If that Big Bang Theory set can pass, then this certainly has a shot. Even if it is incredibly dull.
  21. On a scale between 1 and 10, how awesome was Elizabeth Olsen in this movie?
  22. The Babadook I'm.... actually not quite sure what to think.
  23. Oh *facepalm* I can't believe I let that happen to me. I just got April Fool'd... 29 days after April Fools. And I spent these last four weeks thinking there was an MLP song I was missing out on. I guess I should have seen the signs when I couldn't find any MLP song with that title. Man how embarrassing.
  24. I didn't realize it until I read this post, but it has been way too long since I've had a Vanilla Coke. Cue the craving...
  25. Well, look on the bright side: you aren't dealing with bed bugs!
