Hapori Tohu
Rovio, maker of Angry Birds, has partnered with other construction toy makers in the past, but today they've announced that they're teaming up with LEGO. As Toy World Magazine reveals, the two companies will release sets in the spring of 2016 to tie into the release of The Angry Birds Movie (there's going to be an Angry Birds movie?!). The games have been incredibly popular over the years, so it only makes sense that any building sets they make would be with the most popular building toy brand. I'm curious to see what the sets look like and if they allow you to launch birds to destroy the scenery! Zeb
Didn't see that coming. Also, I had no idea Angry Birds was getting a movie. I wonder if Minecraft will ever get its movie, since the one it was going to get got cancelled since the talks with Mojang didn't work out. (And maybe that's a good thing, since the plans were for a live-action movie, which seemed a bit... not-Minecraft-y?) masterchirox580
Seriously, people are still willing a to pay license fee for that? All I can say is don't be surprised if the movie's a flop and don't be surprised if the sets become the next lego Ben 10. Quote It's time to move on. Ghidora131
Oh come on. LEGO, Angry birds is a game that cannot be successfully be transformed into a popular toy line. They've tried it everywhere. It doesn't work. I'm surprised they got away with a The Force Unleashed set way back in the day, but that was for a pre-existing line and a popular one at that. It just won't work. Aanchir
I feel like these are going to be really over-priced, just like the Minecraft sets.I really have no idea what you're talking about. Pretty much all of the Minecraft sets are priced very fairly, averaging about ten cents per piece and never exceeding twelve cents per piece. Such prices are pretty much what you'd expect with any theme, not just licensed ones. The Micro-Worlds are even better, at around seven or eight cents per piece each — though obviously, that's because they use such small pieces. I'm no Angry Birds fan, but I don't quite understand people's skepticism about this. Angry Birds involves a lot of structural play, although like this year's LEGO City demolition sub-theme, it's more focused on strategically dismantling structures than on constructing them. And it's an immensely popular brand, especially with kids. So there's no doubt it has brand fit on its side. Now, is it the video game license I've been craving? Certainly not! I'd much prefer Legend of Zelda or Super Mario sets to Angry Birds ones (though the fact that the LEGO Group managed to wrest this license from the hands of K'nex might make the chances of Nintendo sets a little more promising). But you can't really fault LEGO for choosing to pursue a license for such a popular and ubiquitous game as this, particularly one that is soon going to get even greater exposure among kids thanks to the impending animated movie. Aanchir
I just find it hilarious how the tipping point for "too many IPs" is always "when LEGO starts making ones that I happen to particularly dislike". Never mind if hundreds of thousands of other people around the world like them. So many people are treating this as a "cash grab", but by that argument what makes this any less legitimate than LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Minecraft, or LEGO Super Heroes? All of those properties are cash cows in their own right, and have been since well before LEGO decided to acquire the building toy license for them. There aren't even any justifiable arguments against the content like you could have for the Simpsons sets or the Big Bang Theory set, because Angry Birds is unquestionably G-rated. And if the profitability of the license and the appropriateness of the content are ruled out as possible objections, all that's left is a hipster-like objection that the property is "too mainstream". Which is an utterly feeble reason to object to this license. Oh no, LEGO is making sets for a thing I don't like. This is clearly the end of the world. It's not like that at all for me. I just wonder why NOW of all times they decide to do something like this... it surprises me. Most likely, because there's an Angry Birds movie coming out, and because LEGO Minecraft's success probably helped convince LEGO that video-game-based licenses are safer than they had considered so long as the game has a big enough userbase. Does Lego make original sets anymore? All the time! Have you not been paying attention? 3 Quote Latest MOC: PAIGE (Prototype Artificial Intelligence, Gynoid Expression)
Rooster Nui
I actually think these have potential. Think about it, you could make a funky creation with a dozen birds flying into a castle, or have a hundred of them in a ball contraption. It'd be funny. Seriously though, it's not a bad move on LEGO's part. They probably know what they're doing, and know that this could get them a lot of sales due to the upcoming Angry Birds movie, which I had no idea was in the making. As sets on their own, they could probably offer a large amount of play value for young kids. Yes, it's a surprise, but not a negative one, at least to me. Lenny7092
Wow! I did not see that coming! Man, is Angry Birds getting more popular. I loved playing the games and knew that the movie is coming beforehand, last summer, to be honest, so there seems exciting. I would imagine new playsets that look like the game levels, which would include new pieces used to make slingshots for birds to fling with. Anyway, I can't believe this happened! I was kind of disappointed that the plot of this comic didn't involve someone launching the bird at the Lego person (you know, Angry Birds style), shooting them over the line. That. That would have been really clever. But. Jetpack. Ok. Anyway. This sounds kind of weird. I'm not sure how it'll translate to Lego, but I'm equally curious. Guess we'll see how this goes. I can see the potential in a Lego set - build the pigs' castle out of bricks and the slingshot, shoot birds at said castle to destroy it, rebuild, rinse, repeat. (Maybe even a 3-in-1 build that allows you to build multiple castles.) Quite possibly a bunch of new molds for the birds/pigs, but they don't have to go that route necessarily. But a movie? Yeah. Not sure how that works. 1 Quote Hero Factory RPG | Bionicle Mafia XXIX: Storyline & Theories
