Popular Post jimmybob83
3D-Printable KanohiUpdated 2-25-15 Full Gallery (High Res) (when public)http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=410271 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I hope this is an OK forum for this topic. These "creations" are certainly "Bionicle-based." Let me start by saying that I am an extremely n00b-ish, amateur 3D modeler. I do not claim nor guarantee that these are of amazing quality. But I was really bored and if you've read my Toa Hagah topic (see sig), it's obvious how much I want the impossible-to-find Blocko knock-off Kanohi. So I decided to try my best to make them myself, and that spiraled into all the stuff you see below. These are all for sale on Shapeways. My shop is at https://www.shapeways.com/shops/masksforall I'm not selling these to get rich, (my markup on each is only $3,) I'm selling them so that anyone who wants them can have them! Again, I'm a verrrryyy new 3D modeler, and these are not of jaw-dropping quality. But it realllllyyyy grinds my gears that there are at least 3 people I've seen online who have made awesome Boinicle stuff via 3D printing.... aaand then never offered them up for public sale. So that's why I'm doing it. Note: The axle-connectors are adequate, but imperfect. I used the exact same dimensions for all of my masks, but some of them ended up fitting quite snugly, while others are pretty loose/wobbly. It probably has something to do with the polishing processes and the difference between different colored plastics. But with a little modeling putty or hot-glue they stay in place fine. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mask of Alternate Futures (Olisi)Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/model/2999647/kanohi-olisi-mask-of-alternate-futures-bionicle.html?li=shop-results&materialId=94Wiki: http://bionicle.wikia.com/wiki/Olisi This one was pretty straightforward, actually. I made it larger because Karzahni's a bigger dude. The smaller "teeth" on the right side of his face were supposed to be more pronounced, but evidently the polishing process wore them down to teeny-tiny. (You can tell how sooper-awesome I am at making curvy 3D things by looking at his eyebrow *sarcasm*.) I'm trying to paint it at the moment, with blue and silver. I'll let you know how it turns out.UpdateI am a much worse painter than 3D-modeler But here's an idea of what's possible.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-2-15Mask of Elemental EnergyShop: https://www.shapeways.com/model/2997158/kanohi-pungao-mask-of-elemental-energy-bionicle.html?li=shop-results&materialId=62Wiki: http://bionicle.wikia.com/wiki/Mask_of_Elemental_Energy I used the actual model from the PC game for reference on this one. I'm happy to announce that version-2 fits a Toa head very well! It's a tiiiny snug so I'll do a very minor tweak and feel safe taking it off Beta.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mask of HealingShop: https://www.shapeways.com/model/3001876/kanohi-blocko-1-bionicle.html?li=shop-results&materialId=62 This is a recreation, to the best of my ability, of one of the bootleg Blocko Kanohi that I've never managed to get my hands on. I'm actually pretty happy with how it came out. It's not perfect, but considering that the real thing is next to impossible to find... Update 2-25-15Eeeeveryone wanted it bigger and swoopier. Result? A mask that is WAY too big and swoopy. Seriously, it is huge. And the connector was placed too high. I accept 10% of the blame. I'll try to scale it down. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/PB6NQ6FNL?li=shop-results&optionId=55196985-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-2-15Mask of Emulation Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/LMTXDZYMG?li=shop-results&optionId=43310525 This is the other Blocko mask. This is the updated version. Works equally well with the Metru head.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mask of MechanicsUpdate 2-25-15Everybody thought that v1 was too flat, so I give you v2. You're welcome.Wiki: http://bionicle.wikia.com/wiki/Mask_of_FusionShop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/8JRAPM766/kanohi-taputu-mask-of-mechanics-bionicle-v2?key=a816cfb777d760331c83bda04ba9099b----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mask of Sensory AptitudeShop: https://www.shapeways.com/model/2995010/kanohi-tikanka-mask-of-sensory-aptitude-bionic.html?li=shop-results&materialId=62Wiki: http://bionicle.wikia.com/wiki/Mask_of_Sensory_Aptitude No offence to the other guy who's made one of these in 3D, but his... looks nothing like the image. I'm happy with my rendition. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mask of ElasticityShop: https://www.shapeways.com/model/3001749/kanohi-rapa-mask-of-elasticity-bionicle.html?li=shop-results&materialId=62Wiki: http://biosector01.com/wiki/index.php/File:Comic_Toa_Mahri_Leading_Matoran_to_Safety.png I wasn't happy with the side-cover on this, and the bottom was too narrow to fit on a Toa head. I've widened it and extended the sides back for more cover, but until I have the new version in my hands this is also beta.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-2-15Mask of LifeThis took soooo long. It's kind of rough around the edges but if I spend any more time on this, I'll go insane. (For those who don't know, this was our first glimpse at the MoL from the VNOLG. Then the Toa Ignika set was revealed and everyone was all, "Whaaaat?" And they had to invent some story about how the mask can change shape because reasons.) I'm happy with how it turned out, although I may spend some time thickening the protrusions for durability's sake. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/UASSTX527?li=shop-results&optionId=55082122-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-25-15Mask of DiminishmentThis is based on 2015 concept art. When I first saw it in person I thought, "aww, it's too big." But actually, it's only slightly larger than Toa Nuju's Kanohi Matatu. So I don't feel so bad. I might try and make it slightly smaller. The eyes are a bit far apart (ironic, since a couple of people thought that they'd be too close together - save your judgments, people,) so I might tweak that, but it wouldn't be simple. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/8S8EVNCCN/kanohi-pehkui-mask-of-diminishment-kanohi?li=shop-results&optionId=55100092-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-25-15Mask of Weight IncreaseI'm very happy with how this came out! This is based on a tumblr drawing by just-a-drawing cat. (Link http://bionicle-art-squad.tumblr.com/post/100331847523/challenge-week-4-kanohi-angaru-fan-created-mask) This took a very long time because I made at least three bone-head decisions that made me waste a bunch of time and go back to the drawing board. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/7JPT3KTEX/kanohi-himata-mask-of-weight-increase-bionicle?key=f66e1a122580413de8cee894f46490e4-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-25-15Mask of PsychometryNot much to say here except this is based on art by GarryTheSkrall from http://www.bzpower.com/board/topic/10901-the-first-toa/ I'm happy with the finished product! The eyes could be brought in a bit, I'll see what I can do. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/ATV76NDNZ?li=shop-results&optionId=55135452-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-25-15Mask of GrowthEven though I own the real version of this Blocko mask, some people wanted their own after they saw mine in my Toa Hagah topic. I'm very happy with how it looks - I know the forehead looks a little weird but trust me, most of the weirdness is from the oddities of the renderer and once it's printed and polished it should all be one nice smooth surface. My only concern is the size. I've done my best to make it able to fit an old fashioned Toa head but since the Blocko mask is too small to fit one, I had to increase the size on this model. So we'll see how it turns out. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/V3UNJVVS2?li=shop-results&optionId=55150502 Update: OR, holy cow, you could just buy one directly: http://www.toysrus.com/buy/lite-brix/cra-z-art-lite-brix-building-system-blaster-bot-35800-52102146Update2: Shapeways made a mistake! They forgot to send me this one for some reason! So, still waiting!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update 2-25-15Mask of ClairvoyanceEven though I own the real version of this Blocko mask, some people wanted their own after they saw mine in my Toa Hagah topic. What you might not realize about the Blocko masks is that they are designed to be used with the Blocko head, which is much skinnier than the Bionicle heads, so I had to widen this out a bit while trying to keep as much of the "feel" as I could. Update: The mask is actually too big. I'll see about narrowing it and shrinking it a bit. I was concerned about the old Mata head being compatible but I think I'll focus on the Metru head here. Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/product/KRT94AHAB?li=shop-results&optionId=55158167 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In case you were curious about the names I assigned them above. (I hope you notice that almost all of the fanon-canon weirdo masks of strangeness do not exist for me. I hope you are the same.) Click
As someone who has tried 3D printing, I'm really impressed with how many of these you've managed to put out in such high quality. That Olisi is just... too amazing for words. It's perfect, and I can't wait to see it painted. The Mask of Sensory Aptitude is also fantastic and looks just like the image (though not exactly how I tried to make it a while ago ). The Mask of Elemental Energy seems a little too angular for the reference image, but it's a really cool mask regardless. The other models, while you got all the detail in, just seem... flat and boxy. They have an obvious diagonal plane on the front with all the details, then the sides are just extruded back. I think they would look better and fit better if you rounded them out a bit more. This is a really cool project though. I can't wait to see what else you come up with, but I hope you don't take all the good masks before I get some in. ~ Corpus Rahkshi: Fang | Hoto | Tube | Tear | Canvas | Garrotte | Reda BZPRPG: Azusai | Mitsuri The Scarabax Library | Flickr | Deviantart
Nidhiki of the Shadows
Wow! These are very nice, especially the first two unreleased canon masks. The Olisi is just beautiful! And the Mask of Elemental Energy looks really good. The rest of the masks are very faithful to the comic depictions, and I really like the recreation of the Blocko knock-off masks as well - they are pretty good, though the "Great Kiril" really is pretty blocky. Excellent work! -NotS Edited January 18, 2015 by Nidhiki of the Shadows
Katuko
I really like the Mask of Elemental Energy and the Mask of Sensory Aptitude. They look great! The Mask of Biomechanics would probably look a lot better if you brushed the sides more backwards, so it envelops the face more. Same for the Masks of Elasticity and Regeneration - they are a bit too flat. Apart from that, I'm impressed with what you've done, and I like your choices for headcanon mask shapes. Banana Gunz
The Olisi, Mask of Elemental Energy and Mask of Sensory Aptitude are flipping amazing! The others seems to be a little bit less flattering in design, but honestly I can imagine 3-d modeling to be very difficult, and I can really appreciate seeing these and the skill and development grown in the process. doodleloot
The masks are pretty cool, but you really need to increase the polycount on these. I've noticed that the masks you uploaded to Shapeways have a rather low amount of polygons, wich leaves visible hard edges on the print. This is most noticeable on the Olisi. I don't know wich modeling software you're using, but if you're using Blender you can do this by applying a Subdivision Surface modifier to your model. EDIT: Can you make me a mask of Possibilities? The Mask of Possibilities is way too intricate for me right now. Besides, it looks a lot more like a Transformer face than it does a Kanohi, to me... And you really need to be more thoughtful and diplomatic in what you say. Try, "Have you considered increasing the polygon count, it might make you end result look better." Even though the statement is false, because combined with the limited detail capabilities of a 3D printer and the polishing process, the end results are smooth enough. Iben
I'm really in love with these Kanohi, and I'm happy to see that these are up for sale. The ones I'm most interested in at this point are the Mask of Sensory Aptitude and the Mask of Elemental Energy, they both are really close to the actual canon and look downright amazing. I always wanted a Matoran/Toa with this kind of nerdy Kanohi, and the Mask of Sensory Aptitude is just perfect for it. I'm going to wait until the Mask of Elemental Energy is "fixed" to place my order, but I'm really looking forward to these ! If you ever run out of inspiration, a nice idea might be making "normal" versions of the Inika Kanohi ! -Iben Edited January 18, 2015 by Iben 1 "Unity, Duty, Destiny." But since you're selling these, I think it would be appropriate to polish them as much as possible. I know the final print differs a bit from what you see in the Shapeways preview, but some of those hard edges will be visible on a 3D print of that size (even after being polished at Shapeways) and that is not a good thing, especially when you are selling it. BrickPharaoh
I love this so much. I'm so thrilled you actually started this! I have a few things to learn from you, seeing as I have been looking to 3D-model/print my own masks for quite a while. I have a limited experience with 3D design (not something I do an awful lot of in robotic engineering) and 3D-printing. I will be free for a week from 1-9 Feb and I look forward to buy some of these masks so I can get a feel for their aesthetic/quality. And hey, you are a lot better at this than you led me to believe! I'd definitely buy one of these in a heartbeat (in fact, I just might!). I'm really impressed by the Mask of Sensory Aptitude in particular, though that could be because I love the shape of it. The Olisi is also really impressive. A shame that quite a few of the masks don't fit on Toa heads just yet, but I bet I wouldn't be able to fix that, let alone actually make these! Well done! The Hip Historian Iaredios
Darn, now I am conflicted: get the animated movie Green Lantern: First Flight, or get the Mask of Sensory Aptitude. Argh... These are awesome, though the orange one from the comics would look better it swayed back more ( i know, you are working on it, I have read the topic ), and though this would drift from canon, I feel the removal of the antennas of the Mask of Elasticity would make it look a lot better. Perhaps another version of the mask for those that don't want their mask-wearer to look like a stereotypical 'little green man from mars'? May I ask how you got the names for your head canon kanohi? Pungoo sounds a bit weird... When naming things, I usually go for a two-part combination of Maori, Mongolian, and/or Greek, but always remembering the sound structure of Maori. Like, Sensory Aptitude, I used tino (Maori for perfect), and medrekhüi (Mongolian for senses), and combined it would make Tikhui (teek-WHO-ee). Why doesn't one just translate straight from Maori, you ask? Well, what's the fun in that (not to mention kanohi should have short names) Edit: Please use spoiler tags for storyline spoilers only.-Wind- Edited January 23, 2015 by -Windrider- A RUDE AWAKENING - A Spherus Magna redo | Tzais-Kuluu | Pushing Back The Tide | Last Words | Black Coronation | Blue Man Bound | Visions of Thasos ن We are all but grey specks in a dark complex before a single white light

It would be so much easier if the guy who 3D-printed one before would, you know, make it for sale.. Haha, I believe there was a slight misunderstanding here, I wasn't talking about the Ignika mask, but the Kanohi worn by the Inika Kanohi like the Kadin, Suletu, etc. I always hated how they never really fitted with the other metru/mata head based Kanohi. It would be awesome if there were regular versions of those But of course, I don't want to pester you into doing something you don't want, it's only a suggestion if you feel like it The updated Mask of Regeneration looks amazing, it's much better now ! I honestly think that if you'd model the Mask of Mechanics in a similar way ( so with it going further back and it going sideways as well), it would match the comics a bit more, as in the comics itself it isn't really a flat mask either. But again, this is all up to you ! I'm loving what I saw so far, so keep up the good work ! I have one last question, how close are the colours in Shapeways to the actual Bionicle colours ? Or is it something you haven't tested yet ? -Iben "Unity, Duty, Destiny."
Disciple
Wow! These are some very accurate prints. The Olisi, Mask of Elemental Energy, and Mask of Sensory Aptitude are particularly eye-catching. I like that you even recreated those elusive Blocko masks, which I also wanted to get my hands on as a kid. I'm interested in purchasing an Olisi, and would like to know a few things beforehand, such as whether the plus-rod connection is about as snug as an official LEGO-produced Kanohi. I plan on choosing black for the color, so that I can use it on a bigger variety of MOC's, and would like to know if the color matches the official sets. I know that some colors can look one way on the computer, and end up being more smoky or faded in real life, so I just want to be sure. Also, I second Iben's opinion. If you ever have the time and motivation, some plastic Inika masks would be a great addition. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Ektris
I really, really quite like your Olisi, Mask of Elemental Energy, and Mask of Sensory Aptitude. They look great to me. The only one I'm really not too much of a fan of is the Mask of Mechanics... I completely understand (conceptually, not in practice since I have zero experience with this heh) that taking something in 2D, especially the really abstract sources some of these were drawn on, and turning it into something 3D would be difficult. But that one is, well, literally flat. It's just rather awkward. If you could do to it what you did with your second rendition of your Mask of Regeneration, I think it could look fantastic. But as it is, it does stand out for exactly fitting in with what one typically thinks of a BIONICLE mask as looking like. Overall it's all a great effort, and seeing it be done at all is awesome. ~|ET|~ E-T... Phone home. "He walks among us, but he is not one of us." jimmybob83
Well, what's the fun in that (not to mention kanohi should have short names) It's Pungao, actually. Yeah that font didn't translate well, going from Powerpoint to a jpg, but there are a lot of o's and a's in my names. And I did just like you said, I used a Maori translator on the words like "energy" and "premonition," etc, and tweaked them by ear. I have one last question, how close are the colours in Shapeways to the actual Bionicle colours ? Or is it something you haven't tested yet ? I plan on choosing black for the color, so that I can use it on a bigger variety of MOC's, and would like to know if the color matches the official sets. The only colors I've ordered in have been white, green, and "metallic" as seen above so I can't really comment. But Shapeways should have sample images of their various colors if you look hard enough thru the site. Haha, I believe there was a slight misunderstanding here, I wasn't talking about the Ignika mask, but the Kanohi worn by the InikaOh good gravy, that'd be tough. Maybe someday I'm interested in purchasing an Olisi, and would like to know a few things beforehand, such as whether the plus-rod connection is about as snug as an official LEGO-produced Kanohi.See first post: "Note: The axle-connectors are adequate, but imperfect. I used the exact same dimensions for all of my masks, but some of them ended up fitting quite snugly, while others are pretty loose/wobbly. It probably has something to do with the polishing processes and the difference between different colored plastics. But with a little modeling putty or hot-glue they stay in place fine. Toa Lhikan Hordika
I'm definitely going to have to make an order from you really soon for that Olisi and Mask of Elemental Energy. Is there any chance you'd be willing to recreate the Toa Hagah Kanohi that you made as well? I'd love to recreate those for myself if I had the chance! -

The Hip Historian Iaredios
Oh I apologize! Pungao sounds much better! And i am glad you are going off the original source, rather then whipping up random arse names. No wonder I liked the other names. Maori is a beautiful tongue, isn't it? Not to pester you any further, but do you think a new design for the Pehkui would be okay? If you want, I could probably help you in designing it. Jobber
Dang, I really want that Mask of Elemental Energy for a video game MOC I'm planning but I already order an Epic Edition Kraahkan on Shapeways, and I don't want to wait another ten days for something to be made and shipped. TommyG
Makes me want to build a Karzahni non-mutated MOC... Is that what you plan to do? Pre-forums purge sig kept for historical purposes: Some cool Bionicles are the combiners. Example: Toa Jovan I've built a Krahka with 5 Toa Metru & Toa Norik, adding parts I needed to Norik. It needs 11 blue pieces (the ones that have +&O ends) but there's only 10 in all the Toa Metru sets. Do I have to attach her launcher to her arm? Please PM me if you can help me. http://www.bzpower.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=309724
IcarusBen
The colored one closest to Gali's new mask looks a lot better than the finished product. There's also the uncolored mask with a visor, and that looks pretty cool too. Could you make those two? Prowl Nightwolf
Wow MOCed masks. I wish I could do that. What exactly is a 3D printer? BrickPharaoh
I think 2015 Gali's mask could pass for a mask of possibilities. I plan on using that if I intend to MOC a character that uses it. Wow MOCed masks. I wish I could do that. What exactly is a 3D printer? Does it Carve out an image like from Jurasic Park or more along the lines of what they showed in Small Solders?Additive manufacturing, or 3D-printing, is the process of converting a 3D-design into a solid object by incrementally printing layers of molten polymer upon one another in the correct shapes/thicknesses. Think of it as building a snowman with an ice-cream dispenser (more or less). You have an extruder that spews out molten plastic in layers, adding up along the height of the object to produce a finalized object. It is a revolutionary, relatively new technology that can some day be used to print buildings! Edited January 21, 2015 by Mohamed Marei "Welcome to Valhalla, Warrior."
